Afghan officials say an American reconnaissance drone has crashed in Afghanistan's southeastern province of Paktia, Press TV reports.
A Tuesday statement released by NATO confirmed the incident but claimed that the unmanned aircraft made an emergency landing due to technical malfunction.
According to locals, US-led forces have cordoned off the site of the incident.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid also claimed that members of the militant group shot down the drone in the Ahmadabad district of the province.
The Taliban say they have shot down several aircraft and NATO choppers in different parts of Afghanistan over the past few months.
Activities by the militants have persisted despite the presence of around 150,000 US-led forces in Afghanistan.
The United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001 under the pretext of combating terrorism and eradicating the Taliban militancy but its failure has forced Washington to turn to negotiation with the militants.
The Taliban have steadily stepped up their attacks on the US-led forces, inflicting heavy casualties and damage on them.
Deja vu all over again.

Deja vu all over again, indeed.
“The Taliban say they have shot down several aircraft and NATO choppers in different parts of Afghanistan over the past few months.”
As well as at least a dozen flying saucers, three comets, the Moon, and a partridge in a pear tree.
Excellent shots, those troglodytes.
Can't be true. VP Biden says that the Taliban are "not necessarily our enemies." I'm sure that we can rest easy that the radical, gun-toting, Koran-thumping Afghanis are not responsible.
This story is from the Iranian press.
So much for the argument that the Drones are better then human piloted aircraft.
is Zabiullah Mujahid an official spokeman?
I guess north korea wanted a copy too.
Um...wouldn’t these drones fly above visual range...and would the Taliban really flash on a RADAR? I don’t think they shot it down.
Right. Maybe Obama meant for it to crash in Iran. He can have it shipped UPS. Also, (true story) one-eyed Mullah Omar has been deleted from FBI’s wanted list.
I have friends taking Apaches to a neighborhood near Omar.
Stand by jazzhats.
Nothing to worry about. Joe Biden assured us that the Taliban are not our enemies.
Me thinks they aren’t shooting anything down at 50,000 feet. Sounds like we need to rethink our frequency and coding issues.
This is becoming a habit.
But it helps give our enemies heads up on secrets I guess.
Besides what another $$$$$$$$$$$$ dead drone to 0.
Wasn’t there a story not too long ago about our drone fleet being infected with a computer virus?
How many flying carpets..........?
Are our drones made in China or what?
“Kids! Be the first on your block to get the whole collection.”
So you would prefer dead pilots to accompany the downed aircraft?
Drones go places and do things that we wouldn't send manned vehicles to do in the first place.
UAVs are much much better than human piloted aircraft for these missions; they can stay aloft for longer periods, at lower altitudes and lower speeds, and are expendible, not to mention cheaper.
Do I detect a hint of sarcasm? :-)
Tahibeen are our friends /s
Yes that claim was used to justify ending the F-22, and trying to end the F-35.
