With the Iraq war over and troops in Afghanistan on their way home, the U.S. military is getting down to brass tacks: culling generals and admirals from its top-heavy ranks. Pentagon officials said they have eliminated 27 jobs for generals and admirals since March, the first time the Defense Department has imposed such a reduction since the aftermath of the Cold War, when the collapse of the Soviet Union prompted the military to downsize. The DoD needs to be streamlined. The place to look for streamlining opportunities are in the acquisition centers. Those centers should be consolidated across the Services and the duplication eliminated.

I thought ol’ Bob S. McNamara did exactly that back in the sixties?

Why do I think this is along the lines of the GM dealership closure? I’m just glad we have no external threats or I might be worried.

No doubt all the cuts will come from the operational forces. But REMFs in the Pentagon will be spared any discomfort.

The Navy has more Admirals than it does ships.

Sorted by those thought to be more conservative, going out the door first.

From the article:

"In ordering the cuts, Gates said the military had succumbed over the years to “brass creep,” by adding a disproportionate number of jobs at the top. The number of four-star generals and admirals today, for instance, is roughly the same as in 1971, during the Vietnam War, even though the number of active-duty troops has shrunk by half."

A 50-75% cut would be wonderful. 10% is barely better than nothing.

I wouldn’t mind if there was a 50-75% cut in the EPA and White House Czars.

The only thing that is being cut is American military readiness. Any money saved by cutting personnel will ge to Obooga’s cronies. Obooga is attempting to do something similar to the Border Patrol. Cut the pay by 25 percent and give the money to pillow biting CBP Directors and Deputies.

I’d go 100% for those, along with eliminating the EPA entirely.

Scary thought. Just like in Babylon 5, "Severed Dreams" : President Clarke spent two years putting his people in key places in the military. When martial law/dictatorship came, he had majority of the military on his side.

ya...but I don’t thing the math and the loyalty add up in Clarke’s favor...
