Readers unhappy with loss of privacy in Michigan primary elections
Kalamazoo Gazette ^ | 12/28/2011 | Julie Mack

For decades, Michigan voters have been able to vote in primary elections without anyone knowing whether they were choosing the Democratic or Republican ballot.

That changes under a new law that goes in action for February's presidential primary.

Now the candidates for each party will be printed on separate ballots, and voters will have to fill out a form at the polls that states which ballot they are selecting.

Within 71 days after the election, the Secretary of State will have available an electronic list of voters who cast a ballot and which party they choose. That list will be available to the public for 22 months.

I’m not thrilled with it because it didn’t really close the primary. Instead it provides a mailing list to the parties.

That sounds dangerous.

I don’t want anybody to know whom I voted for.

This is how we get the McCain’s of the world with these damned open primaries. And I know you know. I’m just surprised the GOP hasn’t fixed this yet.

Exactly. Tons of robocalls coming our way. I bet many will not vote in the primary.

No worries about who you vote for... It's about which party you are voting in the primary. You don't get to vote in both.

Texas does this.

Private ballots were a right and necessary for freedom in the USA. Are we now a Marxist country? Don’t answer that.....it is obvious that we no longer are free people.

We’ve got a voter ID law in Michigan. I think the GOP wave last year was a sign that it works.

What people don’t realize is that in some states people only register to vote and don’t pick party’s. Its not open primaries if you don’t have party’s to begin with. Now saying that I am for closed primaries. If you want to vote in the Republican Primary, register as a Republican.

Has anyone else seen Universal Product Code (UPC) on any of their ballots yet? Saw one on the last ballot cast in my neck of the woods.

I totally got it. I just don’t understand why people can’t find a party that identifies with their ideological viewpoint.

Nevermind...I do understand that.

You are not required to specify party to register to vote in Michigan.

No. If it is only identifying ballots for one town or city, that make sense, however if they are unique to each paper ballot that is a whole other issue.

How would a person be able to know?

I’ve never been able to read bar-code. LOL

Ballot was scanned before being handed to me. God only knows what other information was accompanied with the scan. My neck of the woods is not Michigan, though this maybe is something to look out for in 2012 (nationwide).

Until the electronic machines came to my county thanks to HAVA the poll worker handed you a card (different color for each party) which you handed to the poll worker setting the machine.

Voter lists by party are available at no cost to candidates and for a low fee to the general public. The lists show which elections you voted in.

Pennsylvania “supervoters” like yours truly get lots of robocalls.

Party registration has been around almost as long as this country. No. Big. Deal.
