In Washington area, African American students suspended and expelled two to five times as * whites

Across the Washington area, black students are suspended and expelled two to five times as often as white students, creating disparities in discipline that experts say reflect a growing national problem.

An analysis by The Washington Post shows the phenomenon both in the suburbs and in the city, from the far reaches of Southern Maryland to the subdivisions of Fairfax, Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.

In Washington area, racial gaps in school discipline Study exposes myths about school discipline Most students suspended, expelled at some point Police presence in schools spur Miranda questions View all Items in this Story School days 2011-12 Get news, advice and more. Last year, for example, one in seven black students in St. Mary’s County were suspended from school, compared with one in 20 white students. In Alexandria, black students were nearly six times as likely to be suspended as their white peers.

In Fairfax, where the suicide in January of a white high school football player who had been suspended brought an outcry for change, African American students were four times as likely that year to be suspended as white students, and Hispanic students were twice as likely.

The problems extend beyond the Washington area to school districts across the country and are among a host of concerns about school discipline that sparked a joint effort by the U.S. Justice and Education departments in July to look into reforms.

Experts say disparities appear to have complex causes. A disproportionate number of black students live below the poverty line or with a single parent, factors that affect disciplinary patterns. But experts say those factors do not fully explain racial differences in suspensions. Other contributing factors could include unintended bias, unequal access to highly effective teachers and differences in school leadership styles.

Perhaps its because the blacks are slow learners who have yet to realize what the purpose of suspension really is. Apparently the white kids “get it” and change their ways.

Then we add in the difference in numbers of blacks versus whites as has been previously stated.

“Why is the headline on the Washington Post homepage “Wide Gaps in School Discipline”? It’s not a wide gap in school discipline, it’s a wide gap in student behavior”

Typical corrupt “reporting” by the Corrupt Liberal Media.

Of all the double standards in “liberal” dogma, the double standard on race is probably the most rigid.

It is good to see these aware comments. I am seeing this more and more often when Liberal Racist Dogma is evident in the “reporting”. It has become so common that many times the Corrupt Liberal Media wont allow any comments on stories that involve alleged anti black “racism.”

Unfortunately, there is not a Conservative politician of national stature with the courage to attack this double standard on race.

Fwiw, this story refers to area-wide statistics. As to race: the DC suburbs are majority white. The District itself, which constitutes about 20% of the metro area, is rapidly gentrifying and is probably going to tip majority white in the next 20 years as lower income folks are pushed out by rising housing prices. There are an increasing number of DC public schools — still a minority, but the number is growing — that are highly regarded. The city is changing, despite our current unfortunate mayor, who represents the (hopefully) last hurrah of the old guard.

The problem is not really in the white culture but is staring back at them in the mirror for poor blacks.

So, the answer to the problem of “poor blacks” is to simply give them more taxpayer money so they are not poor anymore and the problem is fixed?

This is no “social phenomenon”. It is a natural, predictable offshoot of the burgeoning entitlement society and the dependency mindset that ensues from it. Those being ‘helped’ begin to expect the outcome, not just the help. That leads to demands for concessions and special treatments that become the new norms.
Toss in a healthy dollop of parental “don’t-give-a-damn” and you have exactly what is described in this article.

Stop the entitlements, stop the coddling, stop the pandering to the ‘victim’ class, and that will go a long way to correcting this issue.

No kidding. I cannot imagine what my dad would have done to me if I got expelled for using foul language at the teacher. My backside is sore just thinking about it.

“The ethnic breakdown of students enrolled is 84.4% African American, 9.4% Hispanic or Latino, 4.6% Caucasian, and 1.6% Asian. The District itself has a Caucasian population of 33%, African American population of 53% and Hispanic or Latino population of 9%.[4]” Wikipedia

.844 blacks/.046 whites = 18.3/1 ratio of black to white
.844 blacks/.156 other = 5.4/1 ratio of black to other.

No the Obama childern are not counted in the above data, they go to private schools.

But of course blacks themselves are in no way responsible!

Speaking as someone who works at a High School, there are very good reasons for their suspensions. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with behavior. In fact, administrators give blacks more latitude fo misconduct!

I've lived in DC since 1979. The difference is night and day. Perceptions lag reality, but poverty and gangs are moving out to the 'burbs and young couples are increasingly staying in the city even after they have kids. The city still needs work, but bit by bit, we are recovering from LBJ and the Great Society model, which turned out to be a near-perfect recipe for destroying urban places.

There are great neighborhoods all over the metro area, and my standard advice to newcomers is to live close to work and avoid long commutes, as we have some of the nation's worst traffic congestion. A growing number of the great neighborhoods are in the city, and increasingly can be found east of Rock Creek Park. I can show you attractive neighborhoods in Anacostia where the homes are selling for $400,000 and where the middle class is moving in, largely because Capitol Hill (which used to be the frontier) has gotten very expensive.

Bad reputations linger, but the reality on the ground is changing rapidly.

I can hardly wait for the WashPOS to do a racial analysis regarding the “Flash and Stash” robberies and asks the reasons why whites are so under represented.

Here we go again with the socialist Federal race baiting program. They demonize whites in this process and target white kids and staff in schools more harshly in order to even out the discipline and employment quotas when they do this. Racist blacks and their enablers become racially viscious to white kids who are named the evil race causing harm to “hispanics and blacks.”

White parents and teachers can not afford to play stupid in this race hate game. White kids are already targeted as the race villians in America with race hate and blame in the diversity doctrines. Now they are going to kick it into gear with systematic, authoritative attack. We have been here before. Whites bailed out of “diverse” schools to avoid victimization. White boys have still not recovered from the feminist’s rip of discrimination, hate and harm on them in the public schools.

Race baiting on quota discipline resulted in the insane policy of zero tolerance where administrators could punish a white kid with a pocket knife the same as the Black gang member with a gun. This is where the kid victimized by thugs with violence gets suspended in equality with the attackers. Gays will use this victim thug power to go after white kids, too. It will be systematic and targeted intimidation and harm from the Federal government all the way down to the local level.

Ultimately, they are seeking to stop the schools from discipling those violent mobs you have seen roaming the streets of our cities and targeting whites for beat downs. It’s going to go from bad to worse for whites in the public schools again. It floods out on the streets, too. This is where white liberals get mugged, big time. Whites in Unions will be harmed with racial discrimination and harassing hate games, too. Record and document everything for the ensuing law suits.

Indeed...

So if 80% of the students were black and 80% of the discipline problems were from blacks -
It always has to be a racial thing - that argument has long passed its prime. Time to begin taking care of your own versus blaming whitey for your demise.

The trouble is absence of fathers and this leads to a disrespect for authorities. Households where the mother is the head don’t get enough discipline.

This isn’t a racial issue. Few men were ever grandfathers in pre-1776 America and a majority of households were headed by mothers. This lead to a large cohort of white Americans who were very much anti-authority. They gave us our American Revolution.

Controlling for race and not fatherhood automatically falsifies this study. If they factored in women head of households I bet the difference would be nil.

Gosh, maybe we should give some money to a black justice group to make up for this.
