Public employee union defends Denver cop who was fired for driving drunk at 143 mph

Denver police officer Derrick Curtis Saunders was arrested for speeding and driving under the influence. Before he was pulled over, he was driving at 143 mph in a 55-mph zone. That’s 88 miles an hour more than the speed limit. His blood-alcohol level was 0.089 percent, slightly higher than the 0.08 legal limit.

Appropriately, the Denver Police Department dismissed him. (A judge also sentenced him to five days in jail, fined him $300 and ordered him to perform 100 hours of community service.) Now, Saunders would like his job back — and the Denver Police Protection Association stands ready to help him.

...

The union mentality seems to be: Members should be able to be not only lazy or ineffective but even negligent and irresponsible and still keep their jobs.

It’s a ridiculous situation, but you can thank the courts for it. All he has to do is state that he’s an alcoholic and they can’t fire him. They can put all kinds of restrictions and conditions on him, but they can’t can him. If he violates those conditions or restrictions at a later date then they can fire him.

Ah, they already did.
From the article: "... the Denver Police Department dismissed him."

>> Members should be able to be not only lazy or ineffective but even negligent and irresponsible and still keep their jobs.

And then there are those that want to treat cops like hero’s when they die, even assign special laws so that even in states where the death penalty is not used, could be used when cops are killed - NO THANKS.

The average cop is lazy and corrupt. If you can’t get the death penalty for killing an innocent child, then you shouldn’t get it for killing a cop.

Remember when you hear about cops being killed and treated like heroes, that chances are he or she was a corrupt individual

I actually think you're aiming at the wrong target. The union is only doing what it's supposed to be doing: defending a member.

It's sort of like having a lawyer on retainer. It's not your lawyer's job to judge you, but to defend you.

The real culprits here are the public officials who do not push back HARD against unreasonable union demands.

"average cop...corrupt"

And of course you have evidence to back that absurd claim?

Is he bucking for a NASCAR development division? 143 mph on an open road isn’t to be sneezed at.

Put him on a race track, where all he has to do is turn left and go fast.

The Rolling Stones said so in “Sympathy for the Devil” so it must be true.

And all the sinners are saints.

Hey, he could claim the old child porn defense routine: “I was doing research.”

As written I would agree.

The intent is to assure only proper legal methods are used if you are to be dismissed or charged with a crime. Fine!

However lawyers and unions have corrupted this to mean, we will do everything in our power to get you off. The goal is no longer to assure legal process but to twist everything backwards so the misfits of society can continue unabated.

the best part of all is taxpayers get to pay for it: “paid administrative leave” , etc...

Yeah, and he’ll get his job back. Unless he’s gone down that path before.

What a truly ignorant post. You must be a very small and troubled person - in every way.
I think it's people like you who are lazy and corrupt. You've been busted by the cops more than a few times, then take out your anger and embarrassment by blaming the cops.
Then you dump your hatred on FR and think you're the hero.
You wouldn't make a pimple on a cop's @ss. Go spread your hate on DU.

The real question should be why a Free Citizen is prohibited from driving 143 mph (meh! slowpoke) if he should wish to do so. Just because some totalitarians pulled an arbitrary number (55, 65,...) out of their hat? How pathetic.
