Sometimes, when Im talking to Ron Paul supporters, I feel like I must have been out of the room when they started ladling out the Kool-Aid.
This isnt a campaign, its a cult. You dont have to wear a tinfoil hat to be for Ron Paul, but it helps. Maybe he should change his name to L. Ron Paul.
Four years ago, most Ron Paul supporters had this goofy, stoned quality about them, like Hempfest attendees. Theyd tell you how, like, George Washington used hemp in the Continental Army, dude, and if it was like totally good enough for the Founding Fathers its gotta be like righteous, man.
Lets face it, legalizing weed, not eliminating the Federal Reserve, was always Ron Pauls biggest draw. If any house had a Ron Paul sign in the front yard, the cops had probable cause to get a search warrant for the hydroponic growing operation in the basement.
This year, though, the Paul supporters are angry. Theyve become Ronbots. They dont talk about persuading people, they convert them. A lot of them are convinced that they want another war, this time with Iran. When you ask them who they are, the Ronbots tell you, the neo-cons, which is a synonym for Jews.
Obviously, not all Ron Paul supporters are insane. And before somebody mentions it for me, I should note hes getting more contributions from the military than any other candidate.
But L. Ron Paul and a lot of his people are just not all there. Hes Dennis Kucinich, only with a seven-figure balance in his campaign account. Youve probably heard about his newsletters by now. Of course his name was at the top of all those rants, and yes many were anti-black, anti-Jewish and homophobic, but hes sticking with the Sgt. Schultz defense. He knew nothing. Who are you gonna believe, L. Ron Paul or your lyin eyes?
Somewhere, Herman Cain is wondering why he didnt get cut this kind of slack.
But the Ronbots buy the whole package. Hes been a congressman off and on since the 70s, but hes an outsider. Hes against earmarks, but he takes them.
The reason Pauls popularity has surged in this Obama depression is because of his domestic issues lower taxes, less government, auditing the Fed, etc. But as ex-Sen. Rick Santorum has been pointing out in Iowa, those are exactly the proposals he hasnt got a prayer of enacting into law.
But the crazy foreign-policy stuff that gets him waving his arms in excitement at the GOP debates as commander in chief, he could get away with a lot of that. He could apologize to Iran, for instance.
And hes running neck-and-neck with Mitt in Iowa. Somebody pass the Kool-Aid.
Howie Carr list ping. I didn’t start a “week of Dec 25, 2011”
thread—though he did have a column on Wed. which I posted under its own title (Scott Brown Haters, Consider the Alternative). Here’s today’s column
Howie should be back on air Mon, maybe Tue.
Paul support is a cult - much like Naziism.
Paultard cult versus the Rombot cult versus the Kos cult.
WAKE UP, America! Or we are dead.
More like LaRouchies I think - complete with the bizarre conspiracy theories and such.
That's for sure.
That is one stupid comment. What is much like Nazi-ism is an attempt to discredit, marginalize and censor another American citizens right to get his message out.
Republicans vote for the status quo and the lesser of two evils election cycle after election cycle.
Compassionate conservatism, The Maverick for Change McCain, Mitt Romney....oh man, it's nauseating. No wonder we've slid so far down the road toward socialism.
I'm an independent conservative. I've not made my mind up on my candidate yet, but like him or not, Paul has been instrumental in getting a message out that all Americans should heed.
Straying from the constitution, erosion of civil liberties, auditing the federal reserve.
These are important issues especially the erosion of civil liberties since 911. The terrorist have accomplished exactly what they've intended.
Benjamin Franklin: Anyone who trades liberty for security deserves neither liberty nor security
By claiming that "states' rights" trump unalienable rights, Ron Paul has strayed as far from the Constitution and "civil liberties" as you can get.
Oh yeah? What message is that? That traitor Bradley Manning (with gender issues) is a hero and a patriot? That we can't build a wall along the southern border because it might be used to keep Americans from......fleeing to Mexico? That a nut case like Dennis Kucinich is qualified for a cabinet position? That it really doesn't matter if Iran gets nuclear weapons? That 9-11 might have been a government conspiracy designed to start a war with Iraq so we need yet another investigation to "find the truth"?
I disagree with the comment about the cult of Paul being akin to the Nazi's. It isn't and the comparison is not valid. However, the Paul cult is a LOT like the LaRouchie movement - particularly as both tend to gravitate towards nutty conspiracy theories to address events that can not be adequately explained by their world view.

Libertarianism is a cultist belief system.
The problem with Ron Paul is that his alter ego the cuckoo bird shows up more days than Ron Paul does.
They have many beliefs that seem to you or I as way out there, but they have a right to believe that way.
I tend to think the Nancy Pelosi’s, Chuck Schumers, Barney Franks of the world are much more destructive.
But hey, they have every right to believe that way as well. That’s what makes America....well, America.
Agreed.
The distinction between "domestic" issues and "foreign policy" issues and for that matter, social and economic and national security issues is a false manipulation to distract and divide. Bankrupt nations have no international influence, they are not strong or secure and they are ripe for exploitation from all quarters from within and without.
