Reporting from Honolulu Heading into the new year, President Obama will insist that Congress renew the payroll tax cut through the end of 2012, but will otherwise limit his dealings with an unpopular Congress, and instead travel the country to deliver his reelection message directly to voters, a White House aide said.
"In terms of the president's relationship with Congress in 2012 the state of the debate, if you will the president is no longer tied to Washington, D.C.," spokesman Josh Earnest said in a news briefing in Honolulu.
The assertion is striking given that Obama, as president for nearly three years, is the symbol and personification of the federal government. It also offers a glimpse into an Obama reelection strategy that will target a "do-nothing'' Congress much in the style of Harry S. Truman's reelection campaign in 1948.
With most legislative cliffhangers behind him, Obama does not consider the rest of his policy agenda to be a "must-do" for lawmakers, Earnest said.
Rather, the White House believes Obama would be well-served by continuing to distance himself from a Congress often blamed for Washington's gridlock and infighting.
As the year unfolds, Obama will use executive authority to roll out more initiatives designed to boost the economy and assist struggling families, the White House aide said. Obama has already unveiled 20 such measures under the White House's new slogan, "We can't wait."

Our governor, Rick Snyder, just stated as much on a TV interview last night. He’s trying to construct a bridge between Detroit and Canada, but there’s a private entity who wants to build it with his own money. The Republican legislature didn’t pass it last year, so he said he’s going to go it alone. Don’t know if that means he’ll try to put it in a general election, or (more likely) pull an 0bama trick and sign some executive order.
Hey Obama, no matter how dysfunction the congress may be there is still a Constitution that you swore to uphold. It can wait.
And of course boehner won’t do anything about it.
So his eminence plans to run the country through 2012 as the dictator he aspires to become should there be enough uninformed voters to reelect him.
Just how popular do you think the Commie in chief is? Sure the Congress gets the worst approval in a century, but it was THE DEM Congress that did that. With the help of a few RINOs.
But remember this comes from the LA Times.
Obama’s goal for 2012 -— do nothing and vote present.
THIS is how we should frame this argument!
What kind of leader just gives up trying to work with others?
The Executive Orders will just be ignored. They will be unenforceable. The resulting law suits by the AG will be dropped before they can be litigated
Ping for dictator Obama.
Why not just build a solid gold throne in Honolulu and rule the world from there?
Well, crying is doing something
While Obama might try to create the label of “Do-Nothing Congress”, our nominee can create the label of “Do-Nothing President”
“Josh Earnest...” ?
So in other words, Obama has to decided to become the dictator he always has been.
A Congress with a measure of spine would slap this idiot down at every turn.
Doesn’t an effective leader know how to unlock his team? But I seriously believe his goal all along has been to make a mess and then somehow emerge as the one to rise above it.
So, is he saying he doesn't need a 2nd term? This makes it sound like he did all he needs to in his Presidency.
The action of a ‘would-be’ dictator!
WELCOME TO CUBA
Obama would be well-served by continuing to distance himself from a Congress.
It's the LA Times and their ilk who have done everything in their power to foster the belief that congress has been controlled by the pubbies since Obama was emaculated. They hide the fact that both the house and senate was run by the hard left for 2 years, and how since the senate has been run by Dingy Harry, not a single budget has been passed.
I read an article stating that most people believe that it's the "republican congress" that's the cause of all the problems, and you can bet that the media and Obama will do all they can to foster this lie through the election.
