Newt Gingrich hints he would consider picking Sarah Palin for VP

Newt Gingrich, plunging in the polls, dropped this bomb Wednesday: he would consider asking Sarah Palin to serve as his number two or in his Cabinet if he became president.

"She is certainly one of the people you would look at," Gingrich said Wednesday, according to Right Wing Watch, when asked if he would consider tapping the 2008 vice presidential nominee for a second try.

"I am a great admirer of hers and she was a remarkable reform governor of Alaska, she's somebody who I think brings a great deal to the possibility of helping in government and that would be one of the possibilities," Gingrich said at Ralph Reed's Faith and Freedom Coalition.

And if he did not pick her for his running mate and he defeated President Obama in the November general election, he would consider putting her in the Cabinet, the site reports.

"There are also some very important Cabinet positions that she could fill very, very well. I can't imagine anybody who would do a better job of driving us to an energy solution than Gov. Palin, for example. Tell her that she would certainly be on the list of one of the people we would consider," the former House speaker said.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, the former Republican nominee for president, tapped Palin in his 2008 bid for the White House in an effort to energize many conservative voters skeptical of McCain's credentials. Former McCain aide Steve Schmidt, who was instrumental in the Palin pick, later came to regret the decision.

CBS News contributor Scott Conroy reported last month that Gingrich is most likely to get Palin's endorsement if she decides to officially back anyone before the nomination is wrapped up.

Palin and her husband Todd "speak very favorably of Newt and what they see as his credentials as compared to Perry and Romney," one member of

That’s a clinton era insulting way of democrats referring to Gingrich.

It was used by liberals.

Have to wonder about why it’s being used on this forum.

Noot had a lot to do with letting Clinton’s enhancements to the CRA pass.

The conservatives in the House wanted to block the bill, but Noot gave it his extreme blessing through ‘plum’ committee assignments.

I’d prefer that Gingrich select Alan West as VP, and find a Cabinet position for Palin. Interior or Energy seem like the best fits.

Now this would be a ticket I see potential in.

However, at this point it is pure speculation. Good strategy by Gingrich, even though he was just answering a question posed to him by someone.

Newt (the way conservatives refer to him) effectively shut down Clinton sleaze and Hillerycare communism.

Got a problem with those?

Who do you support. Or get out of the way.

Well, if you believe what an unnamed staff member hinted but didn’t say.

Sounds like desperation trolling for Newt to me.

Why doesn’t he go ahead and fill his VP slot and his whole cabinet with his current rivals.

Palin won’t jump until she sees where the ball is bouncing.

But I think she would definitely consider a top position, if not veep, then maybe secretary of energy would be a good fit.

Great idea! Because Sarah Palin was the key to victory for McCain in 2008. Other great ideas in the same vein: Snooki for Secretary of Defense, the winner of American Idol for Secretary of State, and the fat gay guy from Survivor to run Homeland Security. Call it the Reality TV ticket.

Newt was ASKED by a caller and he answered, he did not bring the issue up himself, and he has been defending Sarah from the beginning.

Minor detail for those among us who have reading and comprehension disabilities.

Furthermore, the following link to an MSNBC interview of Gingrich supporting Palin has been around for years and has been posted dozens of times on FR:.

You’re quite right. If hadn’t been for Sarah, McCain wouldn’t have received even close to the votes that he did. She kept him from total disaster.

The revisions to the CRA passed in the fall of 1999. Gingrich resigned as Speaker and left the House on November 5th, 1998.

People like you have been throwing as much BS as possible at Gingrich for 15 years now, in the hope that at least some of it sticks.

Now, I'll ask you again to clarify your original point: Where was Sarah Palin specifically the "solution" to problems that Gingrich created?

Sarah Palin declined to run this time for one reason only: She is a polarizing figure even within the Republican Party.

“Newt was ASKED by a caller and he answered”

Yes, he responded to a question and said that Sarah is a good choice for helping in his admin. What if he had said he didn’t like her?

Astronaut appears to be another member of the conservative (maybe) circular firing squad you see so much of here at FR.

I think it is very unlikely that SP would accept the VP spot for any candidate. She declined to campaign this time around. However, it think it would be a very smart move by Gingrich to nominate her as his candidate for Energy Sceretary already now.

Given that Gingrich recently dropped Dr Katharine Hayhoe (climate alarmist) it would be much easier for SP to accept.

“Tailspin”.

Based on what?

If I recall, wasn’t Perry odds one favorite on Intrade once?
