Some Elk Grove teachers are 'working to the contract' and no more

My Phan, a senior at Monterey Trail High School in Elk Grove, says she can't get help from teachers before or after school. She and other members of the school's National Honor Society no longer can meet on Wednesday mornings because the teacher isn't in the classroom."Teachers used to be at school early – about an hour before classes started," Phan said. "But now they show up 15 minutes before the bell rings. They leave right after school." Many Elk Grove Unified teachers are "working to the contract." They are putting in their required 7.5-hour days and nothing more, said Maggie Ellis, Elk Grove Education Association president. The work action is protesting a district proposal to cap its contribution to medical premiums at the 2010 level, among other things. In January, more students are likely to notice their teachers aren't available for extra help. The current action, which began in November, is a "soft" action, Ellis said. Because of the holiday season, union officers asked teachers to do their best to work only their required hours. But they will ask all teachers to try to participate in the work action in January.

So the students will not be able to get extra help after hours learning about the contributions of LGBT people to American herstory (newly mandated for 2012 by the leftislature)? What an awful loss!

Typical. It’s why my five kids go to a private Christian School. Many of the EGUSD teachers send their kids their too.

Our younger boys’ football program is open to the public and one of the parents of a couple boys I gave rides to a couple of times is the principal of an EGUSD grade school. She told me she’s thinking of sending her boys to our school next year too.

Oops, pardon the redundancy.

This happened in my district when I was in third grade. bare minimum required time. Nothing more.

It sucked if you needed extra help, but on the other hand, none of the trouble makers were held after class.

Fire ‘em. Hire me. I’ll work for half of whatever they are taking home, and I’ll help the kids out after school.

teaching used to be known as a vocation....not just a job...

probably why private/parachial schools turn out better students...the teachers are there for the kids, and school....NOT the other way around...

Went to a private Catholic school too. Prayer, uniforms..the whole nine yards...and having the best looking co-eds in the city (cough). Never was a snob about it but one thing was sure: I can talk to my teachers after and before school.

The most important point is not only access to the teachers but in private or public: parents should be active in the lives of their kids. It applies to both public or private education.

...union officers asked teachers to do their best to work only their required hours...

In other words, the union doesn't want anyone to stand out as deserving of a promotion - it wants to keep the over achievers and under achievers on the same level so it can decide which radicals get promoted. Sounds like the Leftist plan for the whole Nation.

Well, look on the bright side. At least your children will be subject to the influence of government drones at its most minimum level. I don’t think I’d want my children there at all, frankly. But if it must be, the less time the better I say.

What’s so surprising about this? It’s the union way.

The Union Credo: Do exactly what your union approved job description cites or what the union contract cites....nothing more, nothing less.

For example: You are a teacher and you walk past a piece of paper in the isle. Do you pick it up? Hell no! That’s the job of the union janitor. If you were to pick it up it would jeopardize the need for their union job. And it goes on and on and on.

Unions are the force that destroys both the work ethic and work quality of America.

This contract crap with public employees has to stop.

There are plenty of people willing to work for top dollar and fantastic fringes without some "contract". Let 'em.

Not ALL teachers are like those in Elk Groove.

My granddaughter is a music teacher in a small town public school. She does NOT get paid OT for extra activities or music concerts, etc. In fact, she had scheduled a CHRISTMAS musical concert and asked each child to appear in black (or dark colored) pants and a white shirt. Some of the kids didn’t own white shirts and could not afford to buy them. She used her OWN MONEY AND OWN TIME to drive to a distant larger city, purchased shirts for those in need and gave them to the students who needed them. Now tell me ALL teachers are the same.

I am extremely proud of her, not to mention that she is a NON UNION type which makes me even more proud.

More importantly most of the teachers could move over to a public school for higher pay and better benefits, but they stay because they are doing the job for a higher calling.

I remember back when I was in college people who were too dumb or too lazy to get anywhere in engineering or architecture would tell me they are switching to a humanities major so they could then get a teaching credential which was “a lot less hassle.” People like that who only see it as “a job” wind up in the public schools. I have no idea what the percentage is, but I suspect it is high.

And not all teachers in Elk Grove are like the union hacks in this story. There are some good ones there, but being near a large city invariably there is a larger pool of lazy lugs to draw on, and sadly many of them wind up teaching.
