Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) -- Rick Santorum started the new year riding the wave of a strong finish in the last major poll before Tuesday's Iowa caucuses and looked to rally his supporters in a series of events on Sunday.

There were few surprises in Saturday night's Des Moines Register poll -- front-runners Mitt Romney and Ron Paul finished 1-2 as they had in other polls during the week. But the Register poll showed Santorum, who just weeks ago had registered only in single digits, pulling ahead of rivals Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry.

Does Santorum even have a policy platform?
Honestly, I don’t even know what his keypoints are.

ANY CONSERVATIVE (Santorum, Perry, Newt, Michele, or Herman) on the ballot that beats Flippin’ Willard Flopney will make this Tuesday a nice day.

Period.

Pay attention: Strong national defense, balanced budget, life — not necessarily in that order.

Has Santorum ever balanced a budget?
Commanded troops?

Well, he’s prolife. He promises to eradicate Obamacare outright.

He’s opposed to gay marriage and would defend traditional marriage.

Appoint justices to defend the constitution.

Immediate cut in government spending to 2008, with further reductions of 5 trillion in 5 years.

Defense spending freeze.

Pass a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution capping government spending at 18% of GDP so that Congress and the President will need to balance the budget like Governors are required to do.

Social Security Reform, so that the money coming into the program is self-funded over time.

Eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood and use half of the dollars to support adoption instead.

•Eliminating funding for United Nations’ agencies which oppose America’s interests and promote abortion and cut the US contribution to the UN in half.

I’m not a Santorum man (my man was Cain), as you can see from my profile, but Santorum’s got the goods.

He’s the strongest conservative standing.

If Santorum gets properly positioned he has my vote. His voting record when he was in congress speaks loudly for a man who does what he says.

Rick Santorum has just not been able to get traction, which has been too bad up to now. But he has the kind of platform and program that I could get on board with, now that my #1 choice (Herman Cain) was derailed by the machinations of the Chicago Mob and David Axelrod, who manages to make James Carville look like a Boy Scout in comparison.

Look at his Tiffany’s line of credit for Newt’s budget balancing and in his bathtub for the troops he’s commanded.

Did Abraham Lincoln ever command troops, or balance a budget before being elected President?

Well, I used to run the Cain list. I’m not formally endorsing Santorum, but like I said, the man’s the best conservative standing.

Axelrod might be able to push Cain out, but last I checked we the people can still write him in.

I figure I owe it to him to stick with him till the end.

American Conservative Union:

1998 ACU Ratings: Gingrich 100%, Paul 88%, Santorum 84% [last year all 3 were in Congress]

1998 was the last year that Gingrich, Paul and Santorum were all in Congress.

Gingrich’s annual and lifetime ACU ratings were far better than both of the others:

100% - Gingrich: Annual 1998 ACU Rating (90% Lifetime Rating as of 1998) 88% - Paul: Annual 1998 ACU Rating (88% Lifetime Rating as of 1998) 84% - Santorum: Annual 1998 ACU Rating (83% Lifetime Rating as of 1998)

Never said he was perfect.

Everybody’s got their flaws and Santorum’s got fewer than the rest.

His platform is solid, as is his voting record.

Nope.
Did Lincoln ever balance the budget after gaining the presidency?
