Los Angeles Police Department detectives found materials that could have been used to set fires inside the minivan of a "person of interest" detained for questioning in the recent string of L.A. arson fires, law enforcement sources told The Times.
The sources did not reveal details but said detectives confiscated “evidence and materials” that suggest the individual had the ability to ignite some or all of the blazes.
Little is known about the man. Sources said the the minivan had Canadian license plates but that detectives believe the man might originally be from Germany.

The leftist groups behind OWS are international. Could be a German leftist-anarchist, who decided to join the party.
And some of these guys just travel around for the fun and excitement. I was at a New Year’s party with some of my progressive in-laws, and one of them (age 29) had already mentioned that he had been at Occupy Burlington for a number of nights, and also went down to Occupy NYC for a long weekend. Anyway, he now mentioned that he had been at Occupy Oakland when they shut down the port for a day.
He said, as I would have expected, that the Longshoremen were happy to cooperate. Since they didn’t have time for a formal strike vote, it wasn’t an official strike, but the union leaders told them they were welcome to observe the picket lines informally.
What was he doing there? Just excited to be helping out, in his crazy way. What good did he think he was accomplishing? Something about blocking imports, so the local farmers could do better, I think. And why did he spend the money to fly all the way to Oakland? I suppose it was kind of like a holiday vacation.
Eh, the Red Brigades were a pretty long time ago.
As a guess I’d go with radical Eco-terrorism, especially the focus on cars.

You can navigate around with the arrows. There is a big cluster of fires to the north, too. Maybe he has 2 HQ locations or a friend at one.
If he set any of the fires I hope he never sees day light again. From Germany? WTF, OWS is nothing but a front for international Marxism. Germany will not be happy about this.

Could be Baader-Meinhof, or maybe an Earth-Firster type, i.e. a person who has violent tendencies and grabs onto a Leftist political "cause" to justify his behavior.
Otoh the article says he has some kind of "immigration" issue with a relative.

Do a search on car burnings in Berlin and Hamburg. Left wing anarchists have burned hundreds there in the past few years. Looks like the same MO to me. And no, they’re not muzzies (at least as far as the motivation is concerned).
I was living in Berlin during the recent spate of car burnings.....it’s lefty anarchists behind it. Last I’d heard, the Polizei arrested someone for it. Targeting luxury cars typically; you know, a kind of “screw the rich” sort of thing.
I wouldn't go that far, but I think at this time the PC Los Angeles Times and other MSM outlets may be withholding his name because it sounds Arabic or Muslim.
Just speculation at this point. But it should be noted that (1) arson is not an unusual M. O. for Islamists in Europe, (2) there are a significant number of Islamists in Germany (as in other western European nations), and (3) the arsonist(s) seem)(s) to be active in neighborhoods with significant Jewish populations.
