Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, appears doomed to a fifth-place finish in Iowa. Unless he drops out, that would make South Carolina his last stand against Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney.
The problem is that he might not receive an invitation to an upcoming South Carolina debate (given the debate criteria).
Candidates can qualify to participate in the CNN/Southern Republican Leadership Conference debate January 19th (two days before the South Carolina primary) in one of four ways. First and second, they can place in the top four in either Iowa or New Hampshire. Third and fourth, they can qualify by averaging seven percent support in three polls conducted nationally or in South Carolina by certain approved media and polling organizations.
Either Newt Gingrich or Rick Perry, it appears, will receive the debate invitation that comes with a fourth place finish in Iowa. With 31 percent of precincts reporting, Gingrich is in fourth place (13 percent) and Perry is in fifth place with ten percent support.

I guess there really is a silver lining in every cloud.
thanks for posting this article.
Something interesting in it that I didn’t know:
“Perry is skipping New Hampshire...”
Ain’t going to happen. Huntsman is the one that needs to be gone.
It seems like things are falling into place for Romney any way I look at this.
I think we all should tweet, email, write, contact the RNC and Reince Priebus and tell the GOP to END THE SUPPORT of the Libertarian Candidate.
Ron Paul is NOT in any way representative of the Republican Party. Why they use resources to promote him and his antiestablishmentarianism point of view is beyond understanding.
According to Drudge, Perry’s winning. I am not sure if he’s talking about the same thing, though.
Of possible interest.
Have no fear. Romney will not pick up a single point from the people who support Perry, Bachman, or Paul. They will all be gone eventually, and they will line up behind Newt in all likelihood.
I just dont see the infrastructure needed for Santorum to compete in the south.
And Mittens will never get more than 23%. The more conservatives that drop out tge further Mitt goes behind. Imagine what tonight would have looked like without Perry or Bachman.
Given Romney’s capital resources, his beltway support, and his campaign infrastructure, I see a very clear path to victory for him despite the fact that 75% of the Republican party has consistently not supported him. Money talks and he has plenty to speak with.
well rick will have company in laststandville..newt is that you?
“Ouch! I feel for my friends who are Perry supporters.”
Same. I like them, I like their candidate, but it seems he said THE wrong thing at THE wrong time to THE wrong audience, and that was that. He has a solid record, and is better than most candidates who call themselves conservative. In less desperate times, he might have had opportunity to recover from a bad start. Not in this cycle, apparently.
Given Rick Perry’s debate performance to date, this might be a blessing in disguise......just sayin’....
ya those cain supporters really lined up behind newt huh
Sadly, I agree.
So far, Romney has taken 4 0f the 6 largest Iowa counties (where the money is). Paul has one, and Santorum will probably get one.
Seems to me if he can raise a couple of billion , he might still have a shot at finishing fourth in SC.
Have to admit, you made me laugh....
South Carolinians are smarter than that.
Ron Paul interferes with Conservative Republicans who are challenging Romney.
Well. Rick Perry got dealt a bad hand with all the early criticism and mindless accusations coming from the Cain camp. Did they ever apologize? Then he made several campaign blunders on his own. That said, he was and is still the best candidate in the race. Experience matters. Dignity matters. Service to God and country matter. Rick Santorum is but a hat tip to Sarah Palin....and I guess Murdoch. I wonder if it will be the ticket that Murdoch created. Santorum/Palin. And we think we have anything to do with anything.
So Perry, Bachmann and Huntsman might be gone...Rick is the big winner here.
Well I am not going to knock the guy while he is down and out, but I will say, “President Santorum”!!!!!!
Perry's problems were his bad debate performances. Period. He is getting better at them, but first impressions last a long time and it may be too late for him to recover.
According to Drudge, Perrys winning. I am not sure if hes talking about the same thing, though.
lol. I would love to know what they are talking about.
because neither he, nor Santorum, nor Bachmann is going to do well there.
Santorum will come in third. And then President Santorum will win SC and FL.
Well. Rick Perry got dealt a bad hand with all the early criticism and mindless accusations coming from the Cain camp.
ROTFLMAO. No Perry lost because of Perry. President Santorum can put Perry as Ambassador of Brazil. I told you folks a long time ago that your support for this loser was not a good idea. Nobody believed me, but I was RIGHT! Go President Santorum!!!!
Ironic. Just this morning on another thread I was wistfully pondering whether Santorum could possibly catch fire.
I blush to admit that although I like his positions, I thought he had a glass jaw and didn’t expect him to stay in long.
But heck, my first two choices were Sarah and Cain. They’re gone, he’s still in fighting. We could definitely do worse.
“He would be a much better choice than Romney.”
He would indeed, however unless some of the conservatives drop out, that hands it to Mitt.
Well, I’ll not vote for any ‘conservative’ who freely spends the taxpayer’s dollar.
Which means no Santorum. His record is just as bad as Bush on spending.
Newt, at least, balanced the budget.
And that means more than any lip service to social causes.
Don’t forget he also endorsed Arlin Spector. who was the 60th vote for closure on Obama care.
I might give him a pass, I’d take him over Paul or Romney..
This sucks. I can’t really get behind any of them.

Brazil? Really? No wonder you’re always ROTFLYAO .
I am not sure that Newt can win the SC or FL primaries. His adultery and 3 wives don’t sit well with Southerners. FWIW and as strange as it may seem, Romney will be looked upon favorably for his strong religious convictions and his strong family life. Santorum will be looked upon as a Northerner.
Then again we like grits with everything!

Well I wanted him somewhere comfortable. He would rather Mexico but I thought somewhere in South America would be better and I didn’t want to insult the poor guy by saying Venezuela. I don’t knock a guy when he is down.
“Perry should stay in. He has a good shot to catch fire. He would be a much better choice than Romney.”
I’d like Perry to stay in too-but I also believe he will do what he believes is best for the conservative movement. If he doesn’t see a path to victory, then he may conclude he is only fracturing the anti-Romney vote. I truly believe that Perry, like Newt, is more motivated to bring down Romney, and is not as concerned if he is the one to do it or not. So whatever Perry decides, it will be after much prayer and consideration, and he will be seeking to follow God’s direction.
