Delaware wheelchair woman hit, killed by three cars that flee

A wheelchair-bound woman crossing a city street in Wilmington, Delaware, was struck and killed by a series of three vehicles that all fled the scene.

Police were hunting on Wednesday for three drivers wanted in the hit-and-run death of Edith McFarland, 58, of Wilmington.

She was trying to get across South Market Street, a busy road near the Fairview Inn, where she had been living for the past three months, when she was struck at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Delaware State Police said.

"After the impact, McFarland was ejected from her wheelchair into the southbound lanes of South Market Street, where she was then struck by two additional vehicles," investigators said in a statement.

Police said the disabled woman was hit first by a gold truck or SUV. All three drivers fled the scene without stopping.

I notice there is no mention of a crosswalk.

Doesn’t justify hit and run, of course, one way or the other though.

I hit a pedestrian a few years ago. He was doing his apparently lame impersonation of a squirrel running across the street. Banged him up pretty bad and put him in the hospital for a few weeks. I did stop though. I was never held accountable in the least, though he did try to threaten to sue a couple of times but never did.

If this woman was not in a crosswalk, there really should have been no motivation for the drivers to run. Especially the second and third cars.

The crazy part about this is drivers 2 and 3 were probably not at fault. Meaning, the poor woman was already in the road from being struck by driver 1 and they may not have been able to stop. Absolutely no concern for this poor woman... that saddens me.

Downtown Wilmington after dark is nothing but druggies and losers. It’s a cesspool. A democrat utopia. I’m not surprised by the lack of character or conscience.

Very sad. I think you are correct about the cross walk. The article is written that you could infer that there was no light, no cross walk, it was dark, and she is in a wheel chair which means the field of vision from the car would have been more limited. Having said that....WTH and why didn’t the first person stop.

Thought it was a deer?

Very possible, given the dearth of info here. Heck, it could have been so “glancing” that they didn’t even know they hit her. Likewise with the other two cars. I’ve run over dead animals in the road at night and not stopped.

—All three drivers fled the scene without stopping.—

That is another way of saying that all the drivers continued driving as if they had not hit anything worth stopping for. And it is actually possible that that is exactly what happened.

Not saying it is, just that it is possible. Road noise and loud stereos really can mask things like this.

When my car hits something, anything, I notice that it has hit something, and if I am not crippled from the impact, I often stop the car, and see if there was serious damage to it, or whatever it was that I hit. Damages to your car from an impact can be worsened if you keep it running. Additionally, the fact that I did hit something in the dark is a good call to me that I really don’t know what it was or how much it could hurt me. I hoped that I didn’t hit something alive, but I couldn’t initially know when I was in the nighttime conditions, and the object came right up fast with the speed of the car.

Even if this person wasn’t unselfish, he could have at least, assuming poor visibility, tried to check about his own car.

I don’t see a crosswalk in that picture. So, she’d lost her leg due to a previous hit and run. Makes you wonder if she didn’t learn her lesson about crosswalks.

Strange that google maps show that as a one way street.

Yeah, in Germany. But we’re talking the US here. ;)

If that turns out to be true, then at least the first driver is gonna have a hard time convincing a jury that they were unaware that they hit something.

This happens over and over in society. Remember the child who was hit in China and other people simply walked by and even ran over the child again? On a smaller scale it happens every day when people see someone having trouble (for instance, carrying something heavy) or broken down on the side of the road and don’t stop to help. Its a complete lack of a sense of community. Not to gereralize but you see it a lot more in big cities than in small country towns. People have been conditioned to have no sense of responsibility for others in the community so they just walk by, even if their actions caused part of the problem.

I notice there is no mention of a crosswalk.

Also the accident took place after dark. Based on personal experience, people in wheelchairs and mobility scooters are difficult to see at night. I nearly hit a woman in a mobility scooter once. She came riding up the shoulder on my right side. I was turning right and I checked my 3:00 position, but her head was below the level of the mirror. Had my passenger not noticed her, I would have rolled right over her when I made my turn. She cruised right on past me and straight across the busy intersection, a blot of dark shadow on a dark road in a dark night. It was scary.

Now imagine that you were in an H2 Hummer and you had no passenger, and there were a lot of potholes. I can imagine many people not even knowing they hit something.

Some of us are so accutely aware and living “in the moment” when we drive that we feel every slight bump or groove, but many people are oblivious. It’s just a fact of life that I’ve seen played out way too much. I really can imagine someone grazing off this lady and her wheelchair and going home none the wiser. Unlikely? You bet. Possible? Absolutely.

All that said, based on where this happened I think that odds are it was a hit and run, at least for the first car.

Do you know how many bicyclists get killed that way? The other trick for bicyclists is to drive on the left side of the road, so they can see on coming traffic. Problem is, they surprise motorists at intersections. I almost hit a chubby little female cyclist like that once.

Totally true.

Even during the day on the mall.

My favorite memory of living there, well I lived in Greenville by the witch, was the sign as you entered town:

“Wilimington, A Place to be Somebody”.....

And then you drive right through a crime ridden neighborhood of druggies and thieves.

Always had my my head and eyes on the lookout every time I got to a stop sign before I got to the other side.

I think those people should be required to have flags, reflective material and bright blinking lights so we can see them during the day and especially at night.

Hell, I’d even be willing to subsidize them with a .000001% tax to install them.

(can’t believe I actually agreed to that but there it is. They really bug me that go out and expect us to see them. They are below eyesight and many times I thought they were a Mailbox)

I watched a city bus (not a school bus) drop off 30 eight year olds. They scattered into the traffic without so much as a glance. They’re taught that the cars have to stop, so you don’t have to look out for them.

When this went down I was a commuter in the DC Metro area. I had a 90-minute drive every night after work. I was often exhausted and frankly not at my best by the time I passed this spot in the evening. I did not usually have a passenger, but as it happened, that night I did.

Do you know how many bicyclists get killed that way?

Yep. A former manager of mine and a huge fitness nut was riding his bicycle at warp speed along the right side of an urban street with no shoulder. He was passing a line of stationary vehicles at a red light. The passenger in one of those vehicles opened thier door to step out (after all, who expects a bike to be hurtling down the 18" space between car and curb?) My manager hit the open door and his body went THROUGH the passenger window. He survived with a concussion and a cracked cervical vertebrae. His very expensive bike was squashed like Play-Doh. I think the passenger had a broken hand.

Bottom line was this guy never thought the accident was his fault.

There is some kind of smug self-rigthousness hormone that riding a bicycle stimulates. I won't regal you with my war stories. I do recall one sixty-ish guy at work who was over weight and slightly lame. Seemed he was a real fitness enthusiast, who kept winding up recovering from bicycle-car accidents that were - wait for it - NOT HIS FAULT!

BTW, know how many motorcyclist get killed and maimed when a driver opens the driver side door?

I've seen some mobility scooters recently with refectors. The old ones had nada. I don't think anyone realized how many people would take them onto the roads. Thanks to Medicare, in low-income 'hoods they are as numerous as bikes.

I've never seen any visibility aids of any kind on a wheelchair.

I’m just saying it really is possible.

It really is, and this isn’t the first time an incident like this happened in Wilmington, Delaware. Unless you are under narcotics/alcohol influence, you would be capable of perceiving that something hit your car, or at least scraped against the side of it. The question is whether or not it is your conditioned response to survey the damage to your car and whatever you hit, or to keep on going.

Road noise would mask this? Sheesh.

Having hit deer with a van, I could hear the sound of the deer being hit, or scraping against the broadside of the car, despite the various noises around me. I could also feel it by how it jerked. I would assume a deer is comparable in mass to a woman in a wheelchair (75-150lbs?) if not slightly less, so I would have a hard time figuring if how I could feel myself hitting a deer with a minivan, how someone couldn’t feel their car or van hit a woman.

Never underestimate the capacity of human beings to be sincerely stupid or oblivious to things about which you are extremely sensitive or perceptive.

And that is even without drugs.
