Wilders: Dutch government should apologize for ‘passive’ attitude to WWII deportation of Jews

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Outspoken Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders called on the government Wednesday to apologize for the country’s “passive” response to the mass deportations of Jews by Nazi occupiers during World War II.

The move is likely to re-ignite debate about Dutch attitudes to the wartime persecution of the country’s Jewish population.

Of the 140,000 Jews who lived in the Netherlands before the war, more than 100,000 were deported and murdered. About 30,000 Jews live here now, out of a total population of nearly 17 million.

Wilders is best known for his strident criticism of Islam and also is a strong supporter of Israel. He wrote to Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Wednesday asking if he would apologize based on comments by two former government ministers in a recently published book about postwar reparations to Jews.

But the government of the Netherlands fled to London.

Which government is he referring to? The Nazi puppet state?

I watched an Episode of "The World at War" Documentary over the weekend, and it was about Holland during the War, and they interviewed some Dutch Communists talking about how proud he was for staging a 17 hour strike to show solidarity with the Jews, and just could not stop patting himself and the Dutch Communist/Labor party on the back.

Then about 23 minutes later they interviewed another fellow, who stated how the greatest failing of the Dutch People during the war, was their Lethargic attitude towards the Nazi's and the Deportation of Jews, and how that Sin will always be with their nation.

Just and Interesting Little Factoid I thought, to show how leftist think when you literally do nothing, they think they did something.

Maybe we should apologize for turning back boatloads of Jewish refugees trying save their lifes by coming to America in the late '30's and which we (in North America) sent back to the gas chambers in Nazi Europe.
At least quite a few Dutch folks did save thousands Jews during the war from certain death - at great risk to their own lives. We did nothing.

“Maybe we should apologize for turning back boatloads of Jewish refugees trying save their lifes by coming to America in the late ‘30’s and which we (in North America) sent back to the gas chambers in Nazi Europe.”

That occurred under the Roosevelt Regime, and we all know FDR could do no wrong.

The experience was not unique to the Dutch. It was all too common among the occupied countries. To resist the Germans would have brought harsh reprisal. On the other hand, actively assisting them bought some respite and at a low cost. Frankly, most of Europe then, as now, hated the Jews in their midst and were glad to be shed of them. Pogroms had gone out of fashion, alas, but here was an opportunity to begin them anew!

The Dutch did establish the 23rd volunteeer panzer grenadier division - Waffen SS. There were a lot of them, a plurality at least, who identified with the Nazis. The common Dutch phenotyope fit the Aryan ideal quite well.

The Holocaust could never have been so successful were it not for the enthusiastic participation by the local authorities all over occupied Europe. They cheerfully drew the proverbial chalk lines around the Jewish ghettos for the Germans and opened their records to the Einsatzgruppen and the other organs of the Final Solution.

Disinter our heroic war dead and bring them home. Let the Ishmaelites have them. They’re barren and dead already.

I have mixed feelings on this subject. The story of the occupation of Holland by the German army is well documented. There are stories of Dutch perfidy in this matter. One is entitled to step back and try to understand the balance between life and death for the Dutch people. Few will ever have to face that balance. All respect to Wilders, he might have got himself shot by the Gestapo, had he been around then. We can look at the credit side. Corrie Ten Boom was a devout Dutch protestant. She helped and hid Jews, as did her family. All went to the concentration camp. Her father died there within ten days, I believe three members of her family also died there. She survived.

To take a shot at Hollywood though, I must recount the story of Ann Frank, also hidden by the Dutch with her parents. In the film, the heavy, harsh voices of German troops were heard breaking down the doors of the safe house. Using rifle butts. In actual fact, it was the Dutch Green Police, whom I believe collaborated with the Germans, they broke in to the safe house.

Correction to my previous post.
Corrie Ten Boom survived to end her days in California, dying at 91 years. Her father died in the concentration camp, as did her sister. Three other relatives were released during the occupation.

Not particularly important anymore, but I'm sure the apology would be welcomed by those still alive. Kudus for Wilders, he seems to take no prisoners.

The US did “nothing” to save Jews during the War? Goodness Gracious, who do you think liberated Western Europe?

We did nothing.

I don't know about that. There's a few hundred thousand white stones in graveyards that would attest otherwise.

If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend the movie “Soldier of Orange”, featuring a young Rutger Hauer, a good movie about the German occupation of Holland.

I have much respect for Mr. Wilders... He’s generally fighting the good fight. But...

I don’t however see much point in these well-after-the-fact “apologies”. Its just a bunch of people that weren’t there “apologizing” to another bunch of people that weren’t there for a bunch of stuff they didn’t do.

I'm not aware of "a few hundred thousand white stones in graveyards ............." which are attributable to the cause of trying to save European Jews from the Holocaust.
Maybe you can enlighten us as to when that operation took place.

The U.S. didn’t lose somewhere north of 400,000 men in WWII?

We didn't declare war or fight Germans or Japanese or Italians to save Jews. There was not even a single major operation specifically planned or initiated to save European Jews during the war.
. Our participation in WW2 had nothing to do with saving European Jewry..

“There was not even a single major operation specifically planned or initiated to save European Jews during the war.”

Nor were there any plans specifically to save priests, gypsies, homos, intellectuals, etc... Jews were not the only ones rounded up and sent to camps.

To target the “Dutch government” for failure to “step forward” is disingenuous because THERE WAS A WAR GOING ON.

You should watch a movie entitled “Flame and Citron” to see what some Dutch were doing while the Nazis occupied Holland.

Considering that the death camps were located in occupied Poland, what kind of operation could have saved Jews. Bombing the camps, ok, so the Jews that weren’t killed by the bombs, would just wind up getting shot. In the end, would it have shortened, or lengthened the war, had we diverted resources to such endeavors?

You got to be kidding.
Most of European Jewry (including 1,500,000 children) were murdered. There were few survivors.
How was any of that "a happy accident"?
We did have a chance to save a few boatloads of these people, but we turned them away and back to death camps.
Even for the few European Jews who survived, most of their families had been murdered.
My guess is that there was no happiness in what remained of the Jewish community.

If you read what the article and subsequent posts said and what I replied to, you would see that it was not me who suggested that our participation in WW2 was to save Jews or that we should have mounted an operation to save Jews.
My original point was to those who said that Holland should apologize for her participation or blind eye to the holocaust during the war - that they should also then consider that the U.S. should apologize for not allowing Jews on refugee boats fleeing Nazi Germany to enter the U.S. just prior to WW2.

I don’t see why you feel like jumping down my throat. I was just saying that it wasn’t fair to say that the U.S. did “nothing” to stop the holocaust. The U.S. was instrumental in stopping the fascist domination of Europe. Of course WWII wasn’t just or even mainly about saving Jews... nobody is saying that.

I do think that any such “apologies” as discussed are just a little pathetic. The people who were wronged are gone, as are the people that wronged them. Few things are as useless and empty as apologies by people that weren’t there to some other people that weren’t there, for stuff they didn’t do. It means nothing. History is history. It was what it was. Would things happen the same way today? Of course not. History is a product of specific times and the people too are cast within their own context of prevailing beliefs and perceptions. It’s not really fair to them or us to re-script long passed events with a modern moral perspective. There’s no particular point in trying to take responsibility now. It changes nothing.
