Teen girl missing 3 years returns home after living with ex-boyfriend

MARSHVILLE, NC (WBTV) - A teen missing for nearly 4 years returned home to Union County Tuesday and told her mother she had been living with her boyfriend in Chicago.

The girl, who was 16-years-old when she went missing, did not come home from Forest Hills High School on April 21, 2008, Union County Sheriff's officials said.

The girl, Vasti Colmenares Gutierrez, left school after receiving text messages from her boyfriend, deputies said at the time.

Everyone was worried that the teen had "met some harm" after leaving the school and many attempts to find her over several months were unsuccessful.

On Tuesday, the girl returned to her Marshville home, where her mother lives, deputies said.

She had been living in Chicago with her ex-boyfriend for the last 3 years and 9 months, she told her mother.

"Vasti's mother is very glad to have her back home," said Det. Sgt Brian Helms of the Union County Sheriff's Dept.

Probably bringing Grandma the little bambinos to raise before she runs off again.

Guess nobody had heard of phone records back 3 years ago?

Seems pretty curious to me.

Also sounds like some MAJOR disfunction in that family!

I remember when she “disappeared.” (You don’t read about a girl named Vasti every day!) How nice that she’s home safely.

Probably thought she swam back across the Rio Grande.

Exactly!

Luke 15:11-32

King James Version (KJV)

11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:

12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.

26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.

27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.

29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.

31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.

32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

Selfish to the point of being cruel. Gone for three years and didn’t tell the parents anything? No call? Not even from a pay phone to say she was OK? I can understand young kids doing something impulsive like going to see her boyfriend for a weekend but how was she raised to think something like this is OK?

Sometimes your parents nagging can make you so nuts you want to disappear or join the Marines. I thought about it every day and some days still do. If we all had cellphones back then, I would have surely gone missing.

Even though I moved 300 miles away at 17, the phone still projected them into my apartment whenever they felt like it. If I didn’t pick up, it would ring every hour, on the hour. If I was out all day, they would start calling my friends.

I’ve never been in trouble, an A student, had my own business, my own car/apartment and was paying my way through college. They were still driving me nuts.

Maybe they kept calling because you were 17 and they were your parents and legally responsible. And they just might have loved you and were worried about you. Unless someone goes in the military it is not the norm for a 17 year old to move 300 miles away!

Oh, you poor thing. Nagging a 17 year old should be banned because 17 year olds know it all. How dare your parents call you! How dare they worry about you! How dare they project themselves into your life after 17 years of raising you!!! I'm sure you were honest as the day is long with them and never lied about your whereabouts so there's no blame on you.

No, how dare you treat your family like that. And how dare that little witch disappear from her family like that. Nice repayment for changing diapers and feeding you and sacrificing for you for all those years.

It went on for many, many more years after 17. At 17, it was slightly understandable but at 26 it was downright embarrassing. Again, I was very successful at 17 and never got in trouble but there was ALWAYS some trivial nonsense to nag about.

I understand talking every day but 3-6 calls per day nagging about every single minute of my day and what I ate gets ridiculous after several years.

Picture me working on a nuclear plant and my mother nagging me why I didn't eat enough special organic honey this month. She even called my boss several times when I was too busy to listen to her nag about such trivial nonsense.

It was so much that it made me afraid of becoming a parent.

"Probably thought she swam back across the Rio Grande."

Whatever happened to that strong family ethic that's so vital that we shouldn't be separating Chicano families lest we break their dear little hearts??? (i.e. parents of anchor babies should all be allowed to stay, and once an Illegal gets established here, their whole family should be allowed to join them.) The little chickie in this story didn't seem to give a darn about any strong family ties.

Well, at least she wasn’t deported to South America.

Seriously, I can’t imagine letting my mother worry like that. And I made my mother worry A LOT!

Parents don’t receive a license to nag their children incessantly. Ever.

Congratulations on making something successful of yourself in spite of that handicap. Sounds like they had deep-seated emotional problems that they were all too eager to load onto you.

You have to break the chain to thrive.
