Republicans block Dem leader Clyburn from speaking on House floor
By Pete Kasperowicz - 01/06/12 10:13 AM ET
House Republicans on Friday morning blocked Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn (D-SC) from speaking on the House floor during a brief pro forma session.
After the daily prayer and pledge of allegiance, Clyburn rose to spoke, but presiding officer Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.) said Clyburn was "out of order," and that no business was to be conducted during these pro forma sessions. Denham then gaveled the session closed.
Republicans in late December prevented House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) from speaking on the floor, by again refusing to recognize Hoyer. Hoyer was making a push to accept the Senate's two-month payroll tax holiday extension.
Republicans are apparently going to continue the practice of holding pro forma sessions, which they have done to prevent the Obama administration from making recess appointments. However, Obama on Wednesday appointed Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and made three other appointments to the National Labor Relations Board.
The appointments were backed by an opinion from White House lawyers that Congress is actually in recess, despite the occasional pro forma sessions. But Republicans have warned that the appointments will likely face a legal challenge.
Unless he's an idiot, he should know the rules. Tell him to shut up and sit down.
The Republicans need to do more than that
“Clyburn rose to spoke...”?
What kind of grammar is that? Did that come from the Hill?
That should scare the hell out of King Barack.
That’s racist and will have to be reported to The King of the USSA...
He is a nonwhite Democrat. No rules apply
The first line implies the second.
God forbid that the GOP’ers should come to a full session to deal with Obama’s recess appointments.
No, they’ll pee and moan like fools and take what’s dished out, so long as they can keep their vacation.
nazi peloser ran the House like hitler... these reporters can FOAD!
As an aside, the other day Her Majesty said she wouldn’t mind being called “ Your Excellency”..oh they have high dreams...and who knows...they could well try to execute this..Just imagine, in this summer of 2012, riots begin in the streets compliments of OWS and SEIU et al and there is upheaval we have not seen since the Civil War..a state of National Emergency is declared by The Dear Leader, there is no election at all..and all of us on FR are rounded up as trouble makers, and terrorists and put in one of the newly developed FEMA camps. And The USA now has it’s own version of Hitler, or Stalin or take your pick of any number of dictraors out in the open...and just imagine the hand wringing of those who supported this terrorist in the WH as wondering how this could have happened in this country..as they too are booted out of their homes..they don’t need that much space, put a family of 4 in your 2500sq ft house and you and your spouse move into a lodging the size of a two car garage....just think..0bama will have his hopeful dreams of change come true..of course what will he do when we are all paupers and there is no more money for his lavish life style in the soon to become drafty big historic White House?
Hati here we come!
Wonder if House rules also provide for many consecutive periods in regular sessions when no business is to be conducted at the whim of the Speaker?
If not, that may be what O is hanging his hat on; i.e., if the House refuses to do business or refuses to allow its opposition to take the floor, it's effectively in recess. The Executive branch might argue its rights and duties are described in the Constitution and are not subject to or limited by House rules or customary practices. (??)
Communists Democrats have no rules but their own. It just shows how ignorant these communists are to be in the House for many years and are still ignorant. I think not. Communists do as they please, and screw the rules and America.
Oh, wow, so brave.
Have they blocked Obama in any way at all?
More 10 second ‘news’ clips...
That's the past imperfect tense.
I think you guys are missing the point. These people know the rules. This was done intentionally so that BO and his lawyers can argue that since House members we not even allowed to speak, Congress was not in session.
He should have done axed first.
The key word is “likely”.
The only difference you have here over all the other examples throughout history is every successful grab for power like that has to have the full support of the military to accomplish it.
I do not believe that Baraq has anything near the amount of devotion of the troops to succeed in any type of coup now.
The first time he orders the military to do something against the people that is even under a shadow of constitutional law the leaders will remember their oaths, believe me on that.
You think that all the local police forces in flyover country are going to allow their people, their friends and neighbors, be set upon by these people and allow it to happen? Or for that matter the Governors? I can just see (my) Governor Mitch Daniels accepting something like that.
Snowballs chance in hell.
Also another HUGE differnce. Not many Jewish families in 1930s Germany had an AK-47. Stalins henchment never had to wonder if they would be shot dead.
And despite our weakened culture, there are still millions of Americans who will put a peacemaker on the tip of your nose and laugh in your face, if you showed up on their doorstep and said we are relocating you.
We still aren’t Europeans. They were sheep like we cannot even imagine.
Silly ‘news’ from the Hill.
Now if this were the 10 millionth time a speaker were ruled out of order in the House, that may be worth a blurb.
This is ‘reported’ because the Hill says what it’s told to say.
Hehehehe. I bet it was Clyburn who said it! Furthermore, what the heck did this idiot want to talk about that was so important that it couldn’t wait?
I hope you are right!
That still doesn’t sound right.
