Obama Takes Victory Lap
The Hill ^ | Jan. 6, 2011 | Amie Parnes

Two days after defying Republicans and appointing Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, President Obama visited the new agency to take a little time to gloat.

Making a victory lap of sorts at the independent agency, Obama cracked a joke, telling employees that he came by to help their new director move in.

More seriously, a seemingly content Obama called the man he tapped a “great director who is tailor-made to lead this agency.”

With Cordray at the helm, after months of delay, the agency will help Americans better digest mortgages, student loans and credit card fees before they become entangled in debt, Obama said before a packed room of more than 100 CFPB employees.

“Now that Richard is your director, you can finally exercise your responsibilities under the law,” Obama said. “We can help give people the clear and transparent information they need” to make the right financial decisions, he said.

Obama was welcomed by an extremely supportive crowd of bureau employees who loudly cheered his arrival and were especially boisterous when Cordray introduced himself as the official director of the agency. A lottery was held Thursday night to dole out seats to employees who wanted to attend the event.

The trip to the agency came just two days after Obama made the surprise decision to appoint Cordray to the agency while Congress was on recess.

The media will push the lie that congress was in recess until enough people believe it.

Not much can be done about this (that will hurt Obama) so I suggest that Boehner and McConnell get together and work on a common political strategy to take Obama on with the upcoming FICA/SS tax cut extension battle, so they DON’T end up looking like fools again.

the agency will help Americans better digest mortgages, student loans and credit card fees . . .

Thus far, ObaMao's tinkering has made mortgages harder to get and costs of student loans and credit card debt even higher.

All he needs is to do more of the same to reverse the situation. < / sarcasm >

So we hire and staff an entire agency of cronies because the entire public education system run by the same cronies is so badly run, they are unable to promote students who may have learned anything about economics?????

Forehead facepalm, "WTF"!

Starve the Beast - that’s what the Repubs can do in the House of Reps, but have not gonads to actually go for it. Boehner, you are a huge part of the problem - please step aside and let someone who actually wants to save America do it.

Imagine what we might accomplish, if we only had an opposition party.

IMPEACH NOW !!

I don't think impeachment is possible. Reid would never let it come up for discussion in the Senate, much less come to a vote.

Realistically though, the Repubs in the House could defund Obama's programs. Appropriations must begin in the House of Representatives. They have the power to shut down the whole Federal Gub'mint if they want to. If they ever decided to grow a pair.

We conservatives remain at a disadvantage. By its nature, the Democrat Party is an organized criminal enterprise that will do anything to win. Until we fight back, Obama is going to be reelected.

I wonder if it would be possible for Congress to prevent Cordray from getting his salary.

Not possible since Congress does not control the funding for this agency. As it was created in the Dodd-Frank abomination, this agency is part of the (private, non-governmental) Federal Reserve and its funding is derived from the Federal Reserve’s operating income.

If only they had the guts to exercise their power as a co-equal branch of the Fed.Govt. They should issue a contempt of Congress citation - there has to be a way to nip this dude in the bud. Essentially our PINO is saying that he doesn’t need Senate confirmation for his apptmts. He has acknowledged the Senate is not in recess.

"I wonder if it would be possible for Congress to prevent Cordray from getting his salary."

Probably not. The Agency is funded from the Federal Reserve and not subject to Congressional Appropriations. This is more of Obama moving to make Congress unnecessary and painted as an impediment to Dear Leader's efforts to "help" America.
