Skip to comments.Mark Steyn: Politics trumps Left's empathy

Lest you doubt that we're headed for the most vicious election year in memory, consider the determined effort, within 10 minutes of his triumph in Iowa, to weirdify Rick Santorum. Discussing the surging senator on Fox News, Alan Colmes mused on some of the "crazy things" he's said and done.
Santorum has certainly said and done many crazy things, as have most members of America's political class, but the "crazy thing" Colmes chose to focus on was Santorum's "taking his two-hour-old baby when it died right after childbirth home," whereupon he "played with it." My National Review colleague Rich Lowry rightly slapped down Alan on air, and Colmes subsequently apologized, though not before Mrs. Santorum had been reduced to tears by his remarks. Undeterred, Eugene Robinson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post columnist, doubled down on stupid and insisted that Deadbabygate demonstrated how Santorum is "not a little weird, he's really weird."
The short life of Gabriel Santorum would seem a curious priority for political discourse at a time when the Brokest Nation in History is hurtling toward its rendezvous with destiny. But needs must, and victory by any means necessary. In 2008, the Left gleefully mocked Sarah Palin's live baby. It was only a matter of time before they moved on to a dead one.
Not many of us will ever know what it's like to have a child who lives only a few hours. That alone should occasion a certain modesty about presuming to know what are "weird" and unweird reactions to such an event...

This shows starkly how the left’s BS about ‘choice’ is actually about abortion as the preferred ending of a pregnancy.
You don’t say things like what these aholes said if you REALLY believe that “no one is pro-abortion, we’re pro-choice.”
Funny how Colmes is so disturbed by a fetus, seeing how he looks like one.
Mocking a dead baby. Wow, lefties, how proud you must be of your ‘humanism.’
Where liberty dwells, there is my country." Benjamin Franklin
Islam Delenda Est!
“How does he write at that level consistently? “
How can we clone Steyn to replace pseudo conservatives Coulter, Parker, Krauthammer, Will, Kristol, Frum, Brooks, et al.?
Steyn is one of the few columnists who doesn’t portray mainstream conservatives as extremists. And last I checked, he’s one of the few that hasn’t surgically attached his lips to Romney’s back side either.
FOX must fire Colmes immediately, if not sooner. There is no “apology” he could give that would be acceptable.
Remember, when scum like Colmes accuse others of doing something, it is because they have done it or want to do it. Projection!
The same way Mozart composed music, although he may not be a Mozart.
I used to watch Hannity and Colmes, and finally had to stop for one very specific reason.
Whenever Alan Colmes asks some really nauseating question, he looks like he’s about to break and run for it before someone smacks him. He looks at the camera (if the guest is remote) and gets this kind of shaky “I can say anything I want, the teacher is watching, so you have to take it!” look on his smug face.
He’s a disgusting pig and when I heard this latest piece of filth out of his dumbass mouth I wanted to sock him.
He is a contemptuous lugworm who should crawl under a rock.
But I'm sure the Left considers him just as much an extremist as any other conservative, maybe more so because of his articulateness.
Thirty years ago I lost my two year old little boy. It still hurts. There are no words to express the contempt I feel for Alan Colmes.
The last thing Colmes should be talking about is that,He looks like a Case of a Botched abortion
I TURN OFF FOX WHEN COLMES IS ON!!
Surely, Alan Colmes, when the time comes, will tremble in cowardly fear as he awaits the doors to hell to open for him to join the evil that is there.
Eugene Robinson is JUST as CONTEMPTIBLE and VILE as Alan Colmes.
If I ran into Alan on the street I'd have a very hard time not punching him in the nose.
In 2008, the left mocked Trig Palin and — on the way out of town after the election — set fire to the Palin family`s church, attempting to murder the congregants inside at the time.
Fast forward to 2012, and the left has:
*$1B in campaign funds
* Legions of union thugs thirsting for a jihad to take “us sons of bitches out”
*OWS mobs doing Election Day disruption test runs in most of the major cities
*No compunction at all about mocking the Santorums and their deceased baby son, and
* “Media” aiding and abetting the whole evil enterprise through agitprop.
The dark side will stop at nothing to retain power and this is going to be very, very ugly.
Oh, they`re quite proud of it. This doesn`t bother them in the least.
Me too.. especially when he sat back in that chair with that smug look of evil satisfaction.
Having gone through the life-altering, heart-crushing experience of having lost an infant son myself (SIDS, 1980), I wanted to jump through that effing TV screen and repeatedly smash my fist through Colmes` face.
Absolutely anything goes with the leftists as long as they think they are scoring cheap political points. Alan needs to be quarantined over to MSNBC where he belongs. He's stunk up Fox news far too long.
I completely agree.
Practice, and he avoided college.
I am only partially embarrassed to say that I need to read Mark Steyn's columns at about half of my normal reading speed and that I usually have to check an online dictionary at least once with every column. Not even counting the new words I invariably learn, I find that taking the time to fully understanding whatever he is saying is always worthwhile.
Colmes is unbearable - always has been.
A few months ago I had enough of BOR - interrupting, etc. etc. He’s not allowed on the TV in the room I happen to be in, even as spouse may have him on in another room - - -
Never understand why he has guests with a story or opinion, or POV - and CONstantly interrupts.
Does he want US to hear their story, or what???
I know he doesn’t want anyone to get away with ANYthing (’Spin’), but he doesn’t wait a DECENT amount of time before he’s all over them.
Even the folks more or less on his side!
Or someone like Mary Catherine Hamm - rarely lets her finish a whole thought. I swear - one of these times she’s going to bash him one, tell him off, and quit - I can see it!
He didn’t do right by Michelle Malkin ages ago (don’t really know the whole story . . it didn’t have anything to do with interrupting . . ?
He didn’t defend her over something, think it was).
I sort of don’t understand why people bother to go on his show, knowing they’ll get in tiny bits of talk, but I guess it’s prestige.
What is LOUsy for the TV audience is that we can’t understand when 2 people talk at the same time.
I can, when it’s me and another, talking face to face, but conversation is hideous to try and understand over TV and radio when 2 or more people talk ‘on top’of each other.
Steyn is brilliant!
“one designer child at 39”
Can you say Chelsea Rodham Clinton?
I turn off FOX when BOR comes on.
My experience is liberals 'empathize' with themselves and fellow liberals. And act like that's special. It's as if we bragged about our great understanding and 'feeling' for a fellow gun owner. How much effort does that take?
If liberals knew how dreadful they looked to the rest of us, they would crawl back under their rocks.
When parents have to face the loss of their child who dies before and at birth, it is one of the most heart wrenching things on earth. Those who try to pretend it never existed are the ones who often have the most long terms problems. I get aggravated by Colmes many times, but I never would have imagined that he would stoop this low and be this cruel.
Let Fox know.
Colmes has to go.
Santorum doesn’t apologize to the left. The left apologizes to Santorum!
He is great on paper just horrible when he fill in for Rush.
A close relative of mine had to deliver a dead baby. Alan Colmes and Eugene Robinson don’t know squat. I hope they never have to go thru it. But this is deeply sick and corroding nastiness in each of them. Revenge, if you will, from a left furious that the final victory over the Constitution, which they thought they had in 2008, will likely be delayed for a bit.
“He is great on paper just horrible when he fill in for Rush.”
Agreed. Same problem on TV. Steyn filled in for someone on either Fox News or Fox Business Channel the other night and it was dreadful. Great writer. Poor radio and TV presence.
“I am only partially embarrassed to say that I need to read Mark Steyn’s columns at about half of my normal reading speed and that I usually have to check an online dictionary at least once with every column.”
So glad to hear that. I usually reread several sentences over and over again until the light bulb comes on. His writing skills are much better than my comprehending skills. Wish I hadn’t attended public school.
Brilliant and very funny. Unlike the other substitutes, I look forward to Steyn guest-hosting.
BOR ONLY interrupts CONSERVATIVES!! He lets the leftists go on and on. He REALLT is a BORE!
I saw the Colmes comments. He should be fired.
The Current FReepathon Pays For The Current Quarters Expenses?
Same with KGB Rove.
Steyn is simply wonderful. Nobody can slash open the gussied up Liberal garbage sack and expose it’s putrid contents better than he.
Santorum's respect for all life, including even the smallest bleakest meanest two-hour life, speaks well for him, especially in comparison with his fellow Pennsylvanian, the accused mass murderer Kermit Gosnell, an industrial-scale abortionist at a Philadelphia charnel house who plunged scissors into the spinal cords of healthy delivered babies. Few of Gosnell's employees seemed to find anything "weird" about that: Indeed, they helped him out by tossing their remains in jars and bags piled up in freezers and cupboards. Much less crazy than taking 'em home and holding a funeral, right?
That just about says it. Power is all they really want: The power to take your money and spend it themselves. They know they're worthless in a real economy, and that's the nexus for why they hate hard-working, decent family men: It's envy.
The only reason I subscribe to Rush 24/7 is so that I do not miss any of the times Steyn substitutes.
Neither Rush nor Steyn went to college, but listening to Steyn is like listening to a professor from Hillsdale College. He has an amazing breadth of knowledge.
Rush is politically adept, but I learn more from Steyn whether you like his presentation or not.
As for Colmes, the guy is beyond contempt. He is an evil Eddie Haskell. I hate it that BOR has him teamed up with Monica Crowley. I like listening to her but just can’t with Colmes in the picture. And yes, I know he is her brother-in-law. Creeps me out.
‘He really is a BORE.’
O’Reilly is a B O O R.
A Levittown, Long Island Boor.
I was raised on Long Island - I know!
A more hateful, vile and willfully cretinous people you couldn't find this side of the Gestapo.
Stein regularly hits it out of the park, but this article was so powerful that I just had to sit down and catch my breath for a few minutes. Maybe it’s the topic of Santorium’s child dying in infancy, maybe it’s just the quality of the writing. If there is ever a history written about this moment in time, Stein will be remembered as one of the great commentators.
Steyn is a keen observer and adept commentator. While he powerfully frames things in the context of contemporary conservatism, I wish he’d make stronger and more frequent references to its roots in natural law, and the Judeo-Christian ethic. If he did so, he could fully claim the mantle of this century’s Chesterton.
Jim Rob should include a “like” button sometimes.
