Activists board Japanese whaling ship

The Sea Shepherd anti-whaling group said three Australian activists were being held as "prisoners" by the Japanese harpoon fleet Sunday after sneaking aboard one of their vessels overnight to protest.

Sea Shepherd said they had helped the three men from the Forest Rescue Australia environmental group to board the Shonan Maru No.2 16 miles (26 kilometres) off Australia's west coast.

"The boats approached the Shonan Maru under the cover of darkness and the three negotiated their way past the razor wire and spikes and over the rails to successfully board the Japanese whaling vessel," Sea Shepherd said of the Forest Rescue trio.

They were now "being held as prisoners on board the Japanese vessel the Shonan Maru No. 2" which had been tailing the Sea Shepherd ship the Steve Irwin and contained "armed Japanese military personnel," Sea Shepherd claimed.

In statement Forest Rescue said it wanted to prevent the Shonan Maru from following the Steve Irwin back to the Southern Ocean.

The Steve Irwin had to return to Australia last week because another Sea Shepherd ship, the Brigitte Bardot, was damaged in high seas and had to be escorted home for repairs, setting back the group's annual hunt of the whalers.

Forest Rescue said it was "making a stand to assist Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in their campaign to end illegal whale poaching in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary."

"We are taking this action to remind the Australian government of their obligation to enforce existing laws pertaining to the prohibition of whaling ships in our waters," the group added.

"Forest Rescue are insulted and disappointed in our government for allowing the transit of whale poaching vessels in Australian waters."

The group has demanded that the Japanese return the three men -- Simon Peterffy, 44, Geoffrey Tuxworth, 47 and Glen Pendlebury,

By definition they are pirates. They boarded a vessel with the intent to do harm and in my opinion they should have been shot on site.

That would have made for some good TV.

So, the Japanese whaler has these three idiots in custody? OK, wait until there’s a pod of Killer Whales cruising by and throw them overboard. Killer Whales find environmentalist idiots to be quite tasty, though soft and squishy. [The Sea Shepherds have been known to give Killer Whales gas; evidenced by a huge bubble rising to the surface from behind the whale and smelling like methane gas.]

If that whaling ship had the Japan flags, those idiots essentially invaded Japan and were lucky the Japanese sailors just didn’t throw them overboard with anchors tied to their feet

Given the type waters those vessels operate in, throwing them overboard sans cold weather gear would be sufficient. Their eco ship might or might not be able to rescue them.

I wouldn’t feed them to the killer whales.

I don’t think there’s much meat on eco-freak environmentalists, though they could do the killer whales good in terms of fibre.

When faced with Japanese imprisonment, some people might try to escape. Even take the table they are tied to with them.

On the far side of the ship...

So you’re ok with protestors breaking into your home at night and terrorizing your family so long as they aren’t trying to settle there?

They should hold them until their return to Japan where they should be placed on trial for Piracy.

A bread and water diet, would be appropriate.

For me, I am ALWAYS amazed at the hypocrisy of MANY folks on here, who CLAIM to be "small government" conservatives - right up until THEIR personal pet peeve is addressed

Whales, drugs, child services......

For me, it is the MOST discouraging thing about being conservative..... conservative hypocrisy.....

I agree. Or better yet, just wrap some chain around them and throw them overboad one dark night. Like any other of the “occupy” crowd, the world would be a better place with them gone. Besides, the crabs and sharks need to eat too.

It’d be fun to turn the tables and Japan Self Defense Force commandos board the Sea Shepherd mothership, arrest Captain Cocoapuffs himself for piracy on the high seas and convey his @ss to Tokyo for trial.

Any Law of the Sea scholars out there?

Whales are exceptional intelligent creatures. But any population benefits from having it's numbers culled when they overtax their resources, be they deer, ducks, or whales. I believe certain species of whales are doing very well, and if you can cull those herd in a humane way, and selectively, then whale away. I would be happy to dine on a whale steak except that they concentrate a massive amount of mercury and toxins into their flesh, which kinda harshes my carnivoristic buzz. Takes me to the topic of mercury poisoning of our oceans, which as a cruising liveaboard, is a front row concern to me.

And again, as a cruising sailor, I have to testify that a pirate is a pirate. Being held in chains for trial in a Japanese court is the most civilized treatment piratical perpetrators can hope for.

As far as I'm concerned, they can mount a .50cal on each whaling ship, see how committed the protestors are to their eco-jihad. People might actually watch the show.

The Japanese fish ebdangeres species out of protected areas where there is no fishing by law.
They claim this is research (for which they have offered not one paper or shown what so called research is for).

There are a limited number of these animals and they are dying out by way of the Japanese.

When they are not skinning animals alive they are doing this kind of stuff and other things we would find disgusting.

The government also took millions of disaster relief money and diverted it to fund the whalers.
Many who donated to Japanese relief want the money back because of funding things like this.

The Japanese are disgusting.

I agree, the Japanese should seize the boat and arrest the entire bunch for Piracy, take them back to Japan and put them on TRIAL for PIRACY ON THE HIGH SEAS. Promptly execute them upon conviction and this crap will stop.

How about using the greenie freaks as crab pot bait.....the Japs are pretty sinister when they want to be. Would not be past them if you look at their war crimes in China in WWII. Human experiments. Maybe eco freaks could be the new bait.

I taught my young teen, now fifteen, about the literal stupidity of liberals by watching and mocking this show.

These nimrods constantly break down the vessels via disrepair, forgetting to maintain...and put the naval eco occupiers in serious danger by lack of common survival sense and ignorance.

Can’t wait for this episode lol.

In the past, if you messed with a ship with a flag, that country would send the navy after you. So, I think the whaling captain could arrest the Sea Shepherd crew and sink their ship.

At least by feeding these Sea Shepherds to the Killer Whales, you've actually done something positive for the environment.

If there was a way to get that whale pod to go after the Sea Shepherd craft and gobble up the occupants, that would be better. Imagine what “Whale Wars” would look like if the pod trashed their high-tech tri-hull MV Brigitte Bardot and gobbled the occupants in a Sea Shepherd feeding frenzy? Now, that IS entertainment!
