NASHUA, N.H. Mitt Romney, already under intense scrutiny for his leadership at venture capital group Bain, inadvertently gave his rivals new material today when he said that he likes being able to fire people.
The remarks came during a speech to the Nashua Chamber of Commerce this morning in which he was trying to explain that he would like people to have the option to pick and choose their medical insurance and get rid of plans that dont meet their needs.
I want individuals to have their own insurance, he said. That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. It also means if you dont like what they do, you can fire them. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.
You know, if someone doesnt give me a good service that I need, I want to say Im going to go get someone else to provide that service to me.

At link is clip of his remark
Well, Mitt actually made a good case but gave a bad soundbite. He’s good at that.
“You know, if someone doesnt give me a good service that I need, I want to say Im going to go get someone else to provide that service to me.
I’m sorry, and what exactly do you find objectionable about that???
So called conservatives who are bothered about companies firing people are not conservatives at all or are so naive they’re falling into the socialists’ trap of everyone being entitled to a job.
Barbra Streisand! Everyone’s entitled to the commitments made by their employer.
There are many major reasons that would never vote for Romney but this is certainly not one them.
“I want individuals to have their own insurance, he said. That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. It also means if you dont like what they do, you can fire them. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.”
Would have worked better had Romney finished with something like “I like people having the choice to fire someone who isn’t meeting their needs” or something like that. As it is, it’s going to be spun as the heartless rich white guy who likes putting average joes out of work and will dovetail right into the Bain Capital issue.
Not a Mitt fan by any means, but he was actually make a decent argument here.
“Romney in his own words this a.m. “
Are you trying to make his remark a negative?
don’t you think people should have the right to demand service if they are paying for it?
Gingrich has been trying to get mileage out of this as well.. Of all the things to get Mittens on, this is not one of them. Gingrich is just lost in space.
Conservatives attacking private business, this will go over like a lead shoe.
Mittie is feeding the RAT propaganda machine which is just aching to run against him.
“I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.”
What he said is one million % correct, American, etc.
Please do not fall for communist headlines or stories. You can hate Mitt Romney all you want but the alternative to what he said is communism or worse. I can’t even find anything controversial in the soundbite or in the full context.
Yes, I want to be able to fire any health insurer, plumber, phone company, doctor ... who gives me poor service.
It’s not about firing people and here Mittie and his defenders are clueless. It’s about creating business atmosphere in this country so that companies don’t have to fire people and offshore jobs to Bangalore!
Slick Willard... “You’re fired !”
If he wants to fire Bolshecrats in the government, so much the better.
Read the story and unbderstand teh media is going to write insanely biased stories like this about whoever is teh GOP nominee.
I already see the template, you take some unknown jackass liberal in the audience, turn them into a hero, and claim the republican was so mean to them, etc.
The end of the article about turning music up loud when the press tried to interview her is insanity. You mean the press can’t step outside or call this “wonderful” liberal on the phone for an interview?
She’s just the latest obnoxious “Chicken George”. Don’t fall for it.
Let’s hope he means it. We need to downsize the federal government big time. We need an executive who is ruthless and fearless about slashing government waste and abuse. Forget about this compassionate conservative BS.
Romney wqas saying you should be able to fire your health insurer if unhappy with their service. Obama, I guess, finds that objectionable.
Don’t fall for commie propoganda.
I agree, but his Republican and Democrat rivals will have a field day with it, despite understanding the context. There's enough to criticize already, without stooping to this. It will just look silly and desperate.
OK, that’s different, though it might be spun the way we misunderstood it!
It will be interesting to see how much mileage the Democrats will get out of Romneys remark.
Like! You know. It's like a civil right.
Fits squarely with the media’s “Romney as Gordon Gekko” meme.
There is a long article about Bain in this morning’s WSJ, that doesn’t make Romney look too bad, but it can be very easily turned against him. Bain was in a nasty corporate raider business.
It will be used for headlines and put in ads everywhere. The rest of what he was talking about will never be heard by the average voter.
There is NO mileage for this comment he said you should be able to fire your health insurance company. OY stop falling for commie nonsense this is not to support Romney, it is to support free enterprise, in fact freedom period.
The article was biased commie crap from beginning to end Romney didn’t say anything controversial, to disagree with it Obama has to be a communist or even a straight up dictatorial lunatic.
It’s the sound bite that will cost him.
“I like being able to fire people...”
granulate image of Romney
“He sure does. At the Bain group, Romney fired people all the time. President Obama is about jobs, about building America, about get us back to work. Romney?”
“I like being able to fire people...”
This ad paid for by some George Soros group
If I would even consider voting for Romney this would not influence me one way or the other.
No. But you can read, can't you? Why did you skip over this comment -- "I like being able to fire people who provide services to me" -- to settle on the non-provocative quote?
Are you trying to make his remark a negative? [RWGinger, post#9]
Frankly, Aquila & RW...you both sound like you're either...
...or lifelong housewives...
Are you really that insulated from an office employment situation -- or any environment where bosses at times have to fire someone?
Tell us: If any of you have a boss, would you actually like hearing your boss say: "I LIKE being able to fire people who provide services to me"
Would such a statement said earnestly/seriously/soberly...send tings up & down your leg?
What do you think that might do for associate employees who tended toward insecurity or even fear about job security?
Are you both so dense that you can't tell the difference between every boss who in certain circumstances has no other choice but to fire someone ... vs. someone who says they "like to" fire someone? Really?
Bosses who get some "joy" out of firing the people who provide services for them?
Tell us again...what there is to "like" about "firing" people -- even as it becomes an obvious necessity at times?????
What he said is one million % correct, American, etc...Yes, I want to be able to fire any health insurer, plumber, phone company, doctor ... who gives me poor service. [Williams, post #13]
Some of my same comments above apply to you as well, Williams. By all means, nobody's advocating infringing upon anyone's right -- or obvious necessity -- of firing somebody. (Give me a break)
You honestly can't see the difference between having to fire people vs. coming across as somebody who "likes" doing that????
Aquila...RW...Williams...and any others who agree with them...do us a favor...next time you vie for a manager/superintendent position that could involve firing, please tell the people interviewing you -- right up front -- that you "like" firing people who provide services for you...
That should get you all some brownie/bonus points right up front...
And if you can't bring yourself to do that, then stop lecturing others on that phrase.
IF you believe this is an example of providing the left with a siound bite you are DOOMED. Period end of story, because this quote is absolutely 100% not disputable. The headline is a filthy commie trick of cutting off the end of a short sentence.
Further, the article switches from his health insurance remark to a discussion of GM (also biased) so that an idiot would think he was talking about firing GM workers.
Again, if this is your standard we can just give up the election NOW. No one can survive it. No candidate.
If I were Romney, I would demand the Obama administration say straight up if it disagrees with the sentence. To disagree would be indefensible.
This libs will use this: “I like being able to fire people who provide services to me” OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER.
If mittens gets the noms.
Part of the problem with the Federal, State and Local Governments it that we don't fire incompetent people. I see them at the Social Security Office, the DVM and City Hall.
What we do need is someone to hold folks accountable. And if that means firing employees in the system, so be it.
I, for one, am ready to fire Barrack Obama. Yes, I like firing people!
Williams, my man, you and I are savvy enough to sort thru the media’s B.S., but in a soundbite society, this will be misconstrued and get mileage.
The fact that Barack Hussein Obama is POTUS should tell you everything you need to know about the intelligence level of the American electorate.
Go read the article idiot. Here is a comment following the article (not mine):
“Way to go ABC. Dont let editorial judgement get in the way of a sleazey headline, people might mistake you for a serious news organization like the National Inquirer.”
Yes, I LIKE being able to fire my telephone company, health insurer or plumber if they suck and as a matter of fact it isn’t that easy to do.
If you don’t enjoy having that right welcome to Obamaland and I feel sorry for you.
What FREEPer will disagree with that statement?
What FREEPer will disagree with that statement?
Yep, can you imagine what the Dems could do with this in the general?
Mitt: " I like being able to fire people "
Interview of Bain victim 1
Mitt: " I like being able to fire people "
Interview of Bain victim 2.
Lather and Repeat.
ABC will have to apologize for this headline. The comments below this despicable story are supportive of Romney. The sentence itself was shortened. Don’t play that “the average person will think ..” thing on me.
Again, since apparently the Obama admin. made a snarky remark, Romney should demand that they state if they disagree with him straight up. because I don’t want the country which disagrees with that quote.
The libs and establishment can’t wait for Obama’s hand picked Repub, Willard Flopney to be the nominee.
Anyone who uses that false quote will be discredited. Grow a pair.
It will be Dems using it, and the media will be joining in, not discrediting, as we have seen here. Get a clue and quit insulting others who are speaking from years of experience watching this.
He just seems off some days. It is an issue that will come up in the Presidential campaign. Mental illness destroyed Tom Eagleton in his bid many years ago when it was taboo to discuss such things. Perhaps it is still taboo.
That is a full sentence and a direct quote of what he said.
It wont be used in context of what he was talking about.
Don't you understand how attack ads work?
Exactly, and I love the Freeper who already accused me of being a (Gulp!) boss!!
I love it when Freepers go commie for their agenda.
The story was a lying headline, an indisputably conservative anti Obamacare remark by Romney, and the rest of the story was absurd as well. Boo hoo they turned up the music loud when the reporters tried to interview some pro union jerk.
I guess Romney controls the earth and can stop all interviews now. Grow up folks, this will be done to any nominee.
You are kidding me, right?
How much indefensible stuff has the Obama Admin done? And how much has the MSM run interference for that stuff?
Dem political ad makers are drooling over this line as we speak.
GraceG "gets it."
And those of you who don't...tell us...
If you only overheard PART of a statement -- a serious (not in jest) statement made by your boss at work -- that this boss "LIKES to fire people who provide services" to him/her...is that a "positive" trait endearing to your heart???
People aren't going to listen to every single word uttered in a sound bite...words that "provide context"...they hear "like to fire people"...
For any of you...is that your "joystick" in life??? Firing people?
Is that something you put on your Facebook home page as somebody you "like" doing?
We are doing nothing of the sort, jack.
We just don't live in your fantasyland where the Dems and the media will be honest brokers and play by Marquis de Queensbury rules and not selectively edit this sound bite to make Mitt look as bad as possible. No such thing as Marquis de Queensbury rules in politics.
Grow up. Here is another comment following the article (again not mine):
“Im talking to you rcaferilla2. I am a democrat that would cheer if Romney stepped in it. However, I value respectable press more than anything and this isnt it. This is spin. This takes something a politician says and tries to change it. Its a dishonest attempt to crank it up. We have real problems in this country and I dont appreciate the press not respecting its readers by printing outrage spin over real news. I feel this contributes to this great dysfunction we have going. You and I both know Romney was simply saying he wants the freedom of options when it comes to this line. Granted hes a complete hypocrite in this entire area, but at this moment this is what he intended and this article is junk.”
