JACKSON, Miss. — Outgoing Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has pardoned at least four convicted killers who worked at the Governor's Mansion, including a man who was denied parole less than two weeks ago.

Relatives of three victims told The Associated Press on Monday that state corrections officials notified them over the weekend that the convicts were to be released this past Sunday. Barbour, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee who weighed a presidential run last year before deciding against it, leaves office on Tuesday.

He's not exactly a losing Governor, we have term limits and he had his 2. If we didn't he would be on his third.

Of course if he had done this during and election, probably not...

There are any embezzlers or white collar thieves in their jails?

No. They all hold elected office.

FTA: "releasing the trusties who live and work at the mansion is a tradition in Mississippi that goes back decades."

It sounds like the people (probably Democrats) who assign convicts to work in the Governor's Mansion were trying to plant a time bomb for Barbour who was contemplating a run for the presidency. Either release murderers or break a decades-long tradition.

Huckabee granted clemency to Maurice Clemmons who later was charged with the rape of a child AND the execution of four Washington State Police Officers. I am praying that this clemency doesn’t result in the same. I’m not saying all clemencies are wrong... they should be done very sparingly with thought of the case/and the impact upon society. IMHO.

If he felt as though they’d done enough time, why not commute their sentences? I don’t understand the pardons

I would have thought he’d be too busy stumping for Romney to have time to pardon anyone. /s

I think the governor thought he was being gracious to his “nice” workers. I’m sure he never consulted the victims’ loved ones, nor even met them.

Reminds me of earlier cases of the Catholic bishops who were initially “nice” to the sex abuse perpetrators, sending them to therapy and maybe to a monastery or to Rome for some classes. They had no perspective on how unjust this would be to the victims, because they had no personal acquaintance with the victims. They thought they were being merciful, open-minded, to troubled employees/brethren.

Abuse of power comes in different flavors. I’m sure the Governor thought he had the best motives. That doesn’t make it any less of a travesty.

I used to know the wife of a parole attorney. Many times his clients were denied parole, despite exemplary turn-arounds in their lives and behavior. The board would say that the person simply hadn’t served enough time. Despite the real and undeniable change of heart, and low likelihood of re-offense, justice was served by making the prisoner do his time.

The point, asshat, is that you apparently have nothing better to do than try to pick fights based on old threads. I tried going back a little ways to see who you have supported in the past but you post so much day and night that apparently you have no life. Do you eat and crap in that chair also? Well, I work for a living. See ya later asshat.

When he was head of the republican party he was one that took on the media CNN was the only 24 hour channel and the net works and called them on their crap...sorry to hear he did this...My niece lives in Mississippi and said he was a good governor...During Katrina you didn’t hear Mississippi shouting junk like they did in Louisiana...she said he just dug in and did what had to be done..Maybe its time for him to retire completely from politics...
