Mitt Romney is the only 2012 candidate whom a majority of Republicans — including conservatives — consider an “acceptable” GOP nominee for president, according to a Gallup Poll Tuesday.
In the new survey, 59 percent of all Republicans said Romney would be an acceptable presidential nominee for the Republican Party. Just 46 percent said the same for Newt Gingrich and 45 percent for Rick Santorum, who were trailed by Rick Perry at 37 percent, Ron Paul at 29 percent and Jon Huntsman at 21 percent.
Romney is also the only candidate whom the majority of both conservative and moderate/liberal Republicans say is an “acceptable” GOP nominee — 59 percent of conservatives said the former Massachusetts governor was an acceptable Republican presidential candidate and 59 percent of moderate/liberal Republicans said the same.
Since the same question was asked in a Nov. 28-Dec. 1 poll, Romney’s overall acceptability rose 5 percentage points, up to 59 percent from 54 percent. Rick Santorum’s acceptability saw a more significant surge, moving up from 27 percent to 45 percent. Meanwhile, Gingrich’s acceptability as a presidential nominee fell among Republicans, from 62 percent last month to 46 percent in the new survey.
No other candidate except Romney enjoyed majority support among moderate Republicans. For Newt Gingrich, 51 percent of conservative Republicans said the former House speaker would be an acceptable nominee for president, but just 36 percent of moderate Republicans said the same.
Fifty-percent of conservative Republicans said Rick Santorum would make an acceptable GOP nominee, while 35 percent of moderate/liberal Republicans said the same. Rick Perry was considered an acceptable nominee by 41 percent of conservative Republicans and 29 percent of moderate Republicans.
Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman were the only candidates who were found acceptable by a greater percentage of moderate Republicans than of conservative ones.
The Gallup Poll was conducted Jan. 5-8 among 479 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 6 percentage points.

I expect those polled defined themselves as conservative or otherwise. That's about the only way a group of several hundred, or a thousand or more in an opinion poll could be categorized as to political philosophy.
Whomever is embracing Romney, it isn’t conservatives.

I am a conservative and I support Romney. Nothing unusual about this. I also support Santorum and would support Newt, even though I don’t like his baggage.
It's very clear statistically that with a truly random poll, they can be quite accurate/valid with a quite small sample size.
The large polls, like the online Facebook, Twitter, AFA, Catholic's Online, Mark Levin, etc., etc., show a very different set of numbers.
All of the above "polls" are utterly worthless, because there is not even an attempt at a random sample, and have a self-selecting sample.
You really need to take a class on statistics. I continue to be utterly astounded at the complete lack of understanding of the basic concepts of polling around here. "Online" polls and "straw" polls couldn't possibly be more irrelevant.
Of course, you like the latter set of "polls" because they're much more likely to show what you want.
Approval rating? What’s that? That’s so 20th Century. Here in the 2010’s, we have “acceptability ratings”. By the 20s that will be morphed into “doesn’t make me barf” ratings, which by the ‘30s will become “doesn’t drive me to homicidal rage to hear his name uttered” ratings.

Romney doesn’t have any realistic chance of winning. If he wins the nomination, it’s going to be ‘Bain layoffs’ every minute, every hour, until election day. 0bama will phone in a landslide.

If true then there is no way that I am a Republican and I am beginning to question the meaning of the term “conservative.”

That’s because THEY ARE. This is what they try to do every election cycle and it’s exasperating as hell.
I’m not convinced it’s going to work this time though. Contrary to conventional wisdom that Romney all but has the GOP nomination sewn up, I think this race is very much up in the air between Romney, Santorum, and Gingrich and I believe Romney’s support will begin to wither as we head into caucuses in more conservative primary states like South Carolina and Florida. Tea Party conservatives are too fired up this election to simply allow the state-run left-wing media and GOP establishment to pick our nominee. Expect the unexpected!
I agree. It’s come to that time where we have to rally. Stop the infighting or we are stuck with 4 more years of Obama.
Gallup has been letting its liberal stripes show in several absurd polls they’ve released this week. I’m thinking they’re starting to do their part to pull out the stops for Obama. I don’t believe for a second that conservatives are rallying behind Romney, unlike many of our inside-the-beltway pseudo-”conservative” columnist/pundit counterparts.
Gallup is a BS poll. No real conservatives embrace the liberal Romney. Polls come out for one reason. To try and influence people into voting one way or the other. Case in point is after Iowa when Willard Gekko “won” by 8 votes. Now remember this was in Iowa. More than half way across the country from SC. Willard Gekko had been losing to Gingrich by over 20 points in every poll taken in SC. All the sudden Willard Gekko “wins” Iowa and polls come out showing him now beating Gingrich by over 20 points in the very conservative state of South Carolina. In otherwords South Carolinians are mindless sheeple that automatically follow the lead of Iowa. Utter nonsense. The gallup poll and Rasmussen started showing the liberal Romney not only winning in SC, but destroying the competition. These polls want us to think all the sudden the people of SC have a love affair with a New England liberal and there is no reason to even have a primary. These damn snap polls that come out every day should be abolished. The lamestream media, and polls are part of the lamestream media, only exist to make their favorite candidate look good.
The establishment quacks want Romney. No one else.
Liberal conservatives support Romney. Likewise conservative liberals do the same.

I’m right there with you. They will blame us for not towing the party line. i don’t care. Mittens is obana. We go down in flames with either of them. Might as well get it overkill with quickly.
