Google gets personal, searches your world, not just the Web
LA Times ^ | January 10, 2012 | Jessica Guynn

For Google, it's personal. The Internet search giant is no longer going to roll out the same search results to everyone.

Starting Tuesday, Google will pluck only the results most relevant to you --and not just from billions of Web pages but from the personal stuff that you and your connections privately share.

The idea, says Google Fellow Amit Singhal, is that Google now searches your world, not just the Web, and serves up results that combine both for your eyes only.

"Your world was missing from search until now," he said. "We are bringing your world into search."

Well, that’s classifying you and shutting you down.

“Google now searches your world”

If I’m having to go to Google and search for something, it’s because what I’m searching for isn’t already an aspect of “my world”.

I find this disturbing. I've got enough people peering into my affairs as it is - this is just another small step down the road to a total loss of privacy rights.

This is ominous and troubling.

# 1 - If they providing only those sites they think will “interst” you, they are compiling databanks of searched sites you had visited.

# 2 - They are limiting the arena of information you might want to review on any subject.

I use Webcrawler.

Google’s Administrator should go back to playing with Chikoo fruit.

Not Google's call. Starting Tuesday, I'll be switching my search engine to Bing.

I rarely use bing. I may have to start.

Or I may have to go to dogpile.com...

So this is why when I googled “Romney, Bain”, the whole page came back with pictures of topless women.

Also a form of censorship, ripe for abuse. Would MoveOn.org be bumped to the top of the search for a conservative...Global warming propaganda top article for a skeptic...

I don’t think that stops them, but I’m not an Internet whiz.

Use WebCrawler its better.

Seems like this doesn’t embrace diversity of opinion or widening one’s scope of what to consider. We already know what we know and it is the things that surprise that lead to a new pattern of understanding the bigger picture.

Not a bad idea. But you ought to be able to opt out and get the “generic search” when you want to.
