Binge drinking rates in the U.S. are at a much higher rate than previously thought, according to a report released Tuesday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC found that more than 38 million Americans binge drink four times a monthconsuming an average of eight drinks each time.
And its not just young adults. Although it is more common between the ages of 18-34, those 65 and older reportedly binge drink more oftenfive to six times a month.
The frequency of binge drinking is higher in households with an income of $75,000 or more. But the disturbing data found that the highest number of drinks consumed per occasion is by people living just above or below the poverty line, with eight to nine drinks per occasion.
Binge drinking is defined by the CDC as consuming five or more drinks for men and four or more drinks for women on a single occasion. Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor of FoxNews.com, said he thinks it is disturbing that Americans are drinking nearly double the amount of what is already considered too much.

After this primary season, I may just be joining them.
With Obama as president, I’m surprised the figures are so low.
The Russians had the answer to each dictator: get drunk and stay drunk.
I don’t drink anymore but 5 beers used to be just a sip before the real drinkin started.
True. In fact some of my friends have already begun!
With OBOMBA as pResident....no wonder!
The media is up your butt about everything. Don’t drink whole milk, eat only 3 oz of red meat for dinner, only eat wheat bread, don’t smell second hand smoke, use sunblock 365 days a year, drink a gallon of water a day, take supplements, don’t take supplements, drink coffee, don’t drink coffee, drink only green tea, drink black tea, don’t ever drink tea..... After this rant, I need a DRINK!
Ah, the joyous ramifications of the “hope and change” regime!

Is a day considered a single occasion?
Back in my, errr, ‘chemically enhanced’ days, eight drinks was not a binge - it was a normal thursday night...
A binge was when ya left work in Cleveland Friday afternoon, and woke up in a park in Topeka the following Tuesday....
An average of eight drinks at a time?? Oh my!
But the disturbing data found that the highest number of drinks consumed per occasion is by people living just above or below the poverty line, with eight to nine drinks per occasion.
Really?? The highest? The highest number of drinks consumed is precisely the average number of drinks consumed, or perhaps just one more than the average?? SHOCKING!!
This joint is starting to look more like the old Soviet Union with each passing day. Great job Barry!!!!!! Pass the Vodka comrade!
I’ll drink to that.
How can you play football after 5 beers? Three was always my limit before a game. Oh, and a shot or two at halftime so I didn’t have to listen to the coach rant and rave about the “bunch of drunks I have for a football team.”
Ummm Consuming 8 beers at one time is called “Getting Drunk” or in the Obama Presidency dealing with a bad situation. They sure wouldn’t understand the concept of Sippin’ Whiskey....
I don’t see a problem here (as I open another Shiner Bock)
In Russia they call those teetotalers.
Don’t play coy. It’s a problem only for singles. If you’re married...
