Patch ^ | January 11, 2012

The carrier, along with the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, reaches the region as tensions are rising with Iran.

Deployed San Diego-based ships in the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and Makin Island groups are now in the Middle East, the U.S. Fifth Fleet and Central Command has announced.

The sailors, Marines and airmen aboard the ships arrive after Iranian officials recent threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for the world's oil supply, and warned a departing U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS John C. Stennis, not to return to the Persian Gulf.

When I was on the “Chuckie V(Carl Vinson)” in the late 80s and early 90s she(he) rode like a PIG(typical Carter Era Ship(boat))! My First Ship(USS Independence CV-62) rode like a 60s or 70s Cadillac Fleetwood SMOOTH!

I believe Stennis is still in the Arabian Sea per the latest US Navy update and Lincoln just left Thailand on its world tour and is apparently heading for the 5th Fleet AOR.

I actually got to trap and cat off the Stennis in 2000 as an Air Force passenger in a C2.

The most incredible experience of my Air Force career was with the Navy.

Go figure...

I have the world of respect for my Navy brothers and sisters.

Excellent! We MUST insure the flow of oil... I mean, so long as it’s coming from other countries.

There is always one carrier in the region there. Vinson is replacing Stennis.

Things will only get interesting whenever the Vinson sails for Hormuz. Probably gonna happen at some stage over the next few days/weeks. Then we’ll see if the Iranians backtrack on their threats or actually try something crazy.

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

I can just see them entering the Strait of Hormuz and sending out a general radio call in Iranian as well as via loudspeaker something to this effect: Can the Iranian military come out to plaaaaay? C'mon, we TRIPLE DOG DARE YA!

Dittos. I was stationed in the Azores 85-88 and I was the weather briefer for the P-3 sub hunters who were there at the time.

Most fun I ever had until I went to work with TR-1 crews in England.

Went back to Lajes in the mid 90s, the Navy had left by then and the “vibe” just wasn’t the same.

Actually for the past decade or so there’s always been at least two supercarrier groups in the general 5th fleet area with a third somewhere in rotation. We keep track of the groups on the big world map here on a shop wall. I’ve long said to watch out for the third——if a third backup group comes on station, as with gulf war II, Ammanutjob and all his friends should keep their heads down. And the same Ammanutjob shouldn’t have any trouble spotting another 100,000 tons of American steel plowing brown peewater at flank speed——he’ll find it impressive!

You mean the pilot didn’t explain “touch and goes”?

Try being on the bridge when a boiler goes high water, you lose power, and you can’t wave a c-2 off approach in time. brrr.

It was sorta like this: 1st) You know that sound in the movies when something looses power - bwaaaaooooumph. 2nd) pitch black 3rd) ‘crap wave him off, wave him off’ trying to find the mc button to the tower 3rd) engine sounds, screech, screech, engine sounds 4th) Did he make it, was anyone hurt, anyone else in the pattern...somebody get a mop...

I've got a really bad feeling about Iran. Things could really go sideways quick.
