Dem Drives Anti-Mormon Card
National Review ^ | 1/11/2012 | Kathryn Jean Lopez

Posted on 01/11/2012 11:55:36 AM PST by americanophile

On MSNBC just now, South Carolina Democratic chair Dick Harpootlian painted Republican voters there as potentially refusing to vote for a Mormon, while trying to make it so. From memory: It does not bother me that he may believe the Garden of Eden is in Missouri, but it may bother them.

This is an ugly card and I hope...

Judging by what’s been here on FR for the last year or so, I’d say being a Mormon is at least 50% of the reason why freepers won’t vote for him. After all, a cultist just cannot be a true conservative.

People on both sides of the aisle hate Mormons.

I dont care one way or the other, but no one should be surprised that the thing that people have been saying for 4 years would come at him IS ACTUALLY COMING AT HIM!

Well you can be sure that the media, who will do anything to keep their almost black demigod democrat from being removed, will leave the LDSinc card unplayed in the general if Milt Rominy is the pubby nominee, right?

Am I supposed to support the weirdo because Democrats attack him on grounds of his faith? Or because Democrats imply that GOPers are bigots? I could not possibly care less. I oppose Willard Mitt Romney because of RomneyCare with its new rules, its new taxes, its assumptions about using state power to pursue progressive goals, its exchanges, and its mandates, a program that is functionally identical to ObamaCare. I will never support Romney; I will never vote for Romney. I will actively oppose him whether in the primaries or the general election.

If a decades-old DUI charge was enough to make evangelical voters refuse to go vote for G.W. Bush, Romney’s faith will certainly cause the same effect. And, the libs have been counting on it.

No, I just thought it was an interesting benchmark. If Romney is the nominee he will be mercilessly hammered for being a 'weirdo' on his faith by the diversity-loving Democrats. This is the firt open shot that I've seen.

Yes, weirdo, as Willard is not so much a man as a mannikin with a blow-dried bouffant-pompadour hair-cut circa 1958, but I'm OK with weird. What I steadfastly oppose is Willard's only accomplishment as an unremarkable single-term governor, RomneyCare, with all its new rules, new taxes, its assumptions about state power in the service of progressive goals, its exchanges, and its mandates. It is a program functionally identical to ObamaCare and Romney himself argues that he is "proud" of it. I will never support, nor will I vote for, Willard Romney.

Not all those folks are bigots. For the most part they seem to be ex-Mormons, or members of OTHER Mormon organizations, or the children of Mormons who were screwy (FLDS for example), or people with a fairly good knowledge of OTHER non-Mormon groups that are into polygamy.

All of us know that MOST Mormons are converts these days and really have no feeling of ownership for Mormon history. That is a problem for them in that they appear to have little sympathy for those who claim their brush with Mormonism HURT THEM.

Just the way life is. BTW, few people ever imagine Mormons as victims.

This is the firt open shot that I've seen.

A month or so ago, Joe Biden gave a speech at some university in PA (I don't remember which), but I guess some question about religion came up in the Q&A. Biden brought in that it was shameful that some people wouldn't vote for Romney because of his religion.

I just heard that little bite on a local (Boston) radio station during the hourly news break -- I guess they chose that one because of the MA connection.

It made me figure that the Dems would play the Mormon card -- not that Obama would do it himself, but I could see the lapdog networks all bringing out "documentaries" (read: "hit pieces") on Mormonism if Romney is the nominee -- all "in the public interest," of course.

I figure something like that is in the works and Biden made his remarks because he knows about it and never can quite keep his mouth shut. ;-)

The anti Mormon bigots are in full hue and cry on Free Republic and have been for months.

Almost all of what is passed off as anti-Mormon bigotry on Free Republic is in reality nothing more than people providing annotated facts concerning Mormonism ... and the vast majority of that data is taken directly from LDS sources and historical records. Saints are offered an opportunity to rebut the replies and apologies are offered along with retractions if the information provided is not correct.

Alternatively, it is common to resort to ad hominem responses (i.e. attack an opponent's character rather than answer the contentions made) when unable to make a credible and reasoned response. Blanket use of the term anti-Mormon is one of the most blatant examples of that practice.

MONTHS??? We’ve been here for years posting the truth about Mormonism.

And as you so correctly state, Zak, it is not bigotry to post quotes from LDS sources and to post personal experiences. Sadly, the LDS (and some non-LDS defenders) name call rather than actually rebut what we are saying or prove that we are wrong.

So, bert, care to point out actual bigotry?

A couple of SuperPacs in the right markets could revive the Rev. Wright fiasco. Axelrod is known for packaging black radicals for white voters. It will be interesting.
