Central Asian sex workers: Missions told to scan women visitors from region

NEW DELHI: The foreign ministry has asked its missions in central Asian nations such as Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan as well as in Ukraine and Russia to re-examine visa applications of women between 15 and 40 years on the grounds of a spike in the number of sex workers from these regions reaching India.

The advice has been issued just ahead of assembly elections and although there may be no connection, apart from larger volumes of unaccounted money sloshing around during the poll season, Indian officials have been asked to rigorously interview female visa applicants.

The move is likely to kick up a controversy as it typecasts visa applicants from these nations. Foreign countries regularly scan visa applicants quietly across racial, religious and national profiles, but screening for likely sex workers might be rarer. Women are to be questioned if there is a shade of doubt about their motives for visiting India.

"Indian missions in the region have been in touch with South Block... and it has been conveyed to them to thoroughly screen applications of women who are 15-40 years of age," said a source.

Central Asia visa scan a delicate task

The directive to missions in central Asian nations to scan visa applicants to filter out potential sex workers is perhaps the first time the government has taken a serious view of "sex trade" from the region, given that the missions are otherwise engaged in an active outreach as India plays catch-up with China in cultivating ties with energy-rich countries.

In fact, sources said, the government is being very discreet in trying to cap the "influx" of sex workers from a region that is friendly with New Delhi. A source stressed: "There is no question of it being a deterrent, though, for visitors as all care will be taken to ensure that no genuine tourist is denied visa."

About 40,000-45,000 tourists from central Asia travel to India every year. The clampdown comes ahead of assembly elections in five states, at a time when the political system is awash with funds that can be used for any inducement, from liquor to other services.

According to official estimates, there are 3,000-3,500 sex workers from Commonwealth of Independent States countries in Delhi alone. Lax visa rules until now have allowed many women to illegally stay back in India.

I would like more explanation of why with all the poverty in India they are importing sex workers? I will have to read more to understand this for this just raises questions in my mind. Is this a cultural thing where it is more okay to have paid sex with a foreigner, someone outside the social system rather then a lower cast person? Are the conditions so bad in the countries that these women come from that being a hooker in India seems desirable?

There is a great need for phone sex workers in India, as American firms have been outsourcing hardworking Americans’ jobs there.

Same situation here in Thailand where there are a lot of eastern European prostitutes. Sure there is a lot of poverty, but there is also a lot of wealth. A lot of men want something different, and also light skin is considered more beautiful than dark in every Asian country I've ever been to including India.

A friend just came back from Phuket and told me the price for the European girls is approx $200 per night, plus tips, taxis, etc. etc. No, they don't get to keep that. This is illegal mafia business as I am sure it is in India also, so to say they import them is very misleading.

You may think so--I believe pictures could easily cause blindness.

What do they do, set up a lampost in the Visa Section.

And then the suspected immediately gravitate to it and stand under it?

Its a big misconception that India is all poor. India has a population of wealthy and middle class people that is larger then a lot of European countries inspite of all the poverty. There is a enormous opportunity to make money. Prostitutes aren't the only ones moving over to India. If you haven't checked lately a lot of American and European businesses are moving to India to make money.

From the various responses it does seem that these women are catering to the people with eclectic tastes and money. I was picturing them becoming street meat, not that becoming a high end whore is any more ethically correct then a street hooker, but I can see where the money motivation is coming from for them now. I learn so much on this forum.
