When it comes to Cuba, President Obama can do little right in the eyes of exilio politicians. When he eased travel restrictions to the island, for example, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen accused him of undermining democracy on the island. Now she's slamming Obama for his decision to order U.S. inspectors to check a deep-water oil rig that is on its way to Cuba.
...
"A state sponsor of terrorism [is] poised to achieve a tremendous economic boon by entering the oil business and endangering U.S. waters to boot," she said. "It is deeply disappointing that the Obama administration appears content to just watch that happen."
The new rig, called Scarabeo-9, is a collaboration between Spanish oil company Repsol YPF and the Cuban government.
The communist-controlled island is estimated to have vast undersea oil reserves, and Repsol plans to drill as deep as 6,000 feet under the ocean's surface -- roughly the same depth as the Deepwater Horizon well -- to find it.
...
In other Cuba news, Iranian leader Mahmoud Admadinejad is visiting the island today. He met with newly re-elected Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega as well as Hugo Chavez yesterday in Managua.

Why shouldn’t US companies be allowed to explore off the Florida coast?
This article is rubbish from the git-go. SCARABEO 9 is wholly owned by the Italian company SAIPEM, and contracted to REPSOL.
They are going to drill 6000 feet below the sea surface? If comparisons to the DEEPWATER HORIZON event indicate the water depth at the prospect, they will only get around 500 feet below the mudline. Good luck with that!
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
drill the Jaguey prospect for Repsol in 5,300 feet of water...
The Jaguey well will be drilled to more than 20,000 feet approximately 55 to 60 miles south of Key West, Florida and 22 miles north of Havana...

Spain and Cuba, of course, have much better drilling equipment and technology than the United States, and therefore can be trusted to never, ever make a humungous environmental disaster. It is only backward US corporations who do things like that, because they want to make a profit, and that causes oil spills. The Spanish corporation might want to make a profit, too, but Cuba will be standing by at the ready in case they make a profit, which of course will inevitably lead to oil spills.
But heaven forbid if U.S. companies drill in the gulf.

It will be very interesting to see if there’s any recoverable oil. Because they’re drilling does not mean there has to be oil, in fact the odds would be better playing blackjack.
Notice the author didn’t whine about the rig at all. As a matter of fact he’s claiming that Obama may have stopped a spill by sending inspectors! LOL! Obviously Bammy-Democrats and Co, only want other countries to drill off of our coast.
Almost enough to make you wonder where Soros gets a cut, isn't it?
