Devastating Anti-Romney Film Surfaces
The Root ^

A film depicting GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney as a heartless corporate raider has emerged just as the race is heating up.
When Mitt Romney Came to Town, a film about Romney's time as CEO of Bain Capital, "is without a doubt the most serious attack on the former Massachusetts governor's campaign," the Raw Story reports.
Produced by a former top Romney strategist, the film focuses on people laid off from their jobs at four of the many companies Bain Capital essentially looted, tapping into the popular discontentment with Wall Street to label Romney a "corporate raider."

The video may be seen here:
When Mitt Romney Came to TownI don't agree with the presentation of this video which is pure appeal to emotion. However, one can't deny that it is hyper-effective, makes Romney look positively evil, and will put his campaign on the defensive for a long time.
For the record, I do think some of the things Bain did run the ragged edge of legality, not to mention being grossly unethical.
This video is already getting passed around on Facebook among my liberal friends. It will go viral. At that point, if the GOP is still stupid enough to nominate this bum, we deserve the epic defeat that's coming.

That it is. But there's no denying that it's effective. Most senior citizens will take one look at that and say "no thank you."
Romney deserves to lose, though, and if his background as a corporate raider is what sinks him, then I'm ok with that.

There are several shorter ads on the subject made by Kennedy years ago that are better made, and will be more effective than this one.
From what I've read Kennedy used this issue to defeat Romney, and pulled so far ahead he didn't even have to use all the ads he had made.
It's pathetic that GOP Establishment don't think we little peons should be allowed to know their anointed one’s full story, and the other candidates have to vett him.

Romney’s job in the private sector at Bain was to buy small businesses, fire the people and sell off the assets.
If it’s legal, I have no problem with that.
But to run for public office and claim you know how to create jobs because you worked in the private sector. Well, that’s just scary.
Yes, Romney does like to fire people. That was the business he ran.
I understand where Rush Limbaugh and others were coming from when they became critics of those attacking Romney. But I also understand where Newt and Perry were coming from.

Mitt Romney is a disaster. As the Republican nominee, he will lead the party to a loss of epic proportions. We need to deny him the chance.

That's exactly what the film was meant to do. I found it to be emotionally manipulative and I could wish it had more facts than interviews. But the facts it did have were devastating, particularly the ones which show Bain to be a pump-and-dump outfit--the dog-crap on the bottom of capitalism's shoes.

Loading up a company with debt that can’t possibly be repaid so you can extract capital maybe legal but is not ethical.
Also, when the company goes belly-up, the taxpayers are on the hook for the worker’s pensions.
To: tsowellfan
If its legal, I have no problem with that.
I think the problem is that much of what Romney and Bain did was legal but grossly unethical. As such, it is perfectly fair fodder for attack ads.
I guarantee you that Romney is acting the part of the corporate raider on the Republican Party right now. He's planning to take it over, hollow it out, reap a reward for himself, and leave conservatives out in the cold afterward. We can not just sit here and watch him do it.

I believe it's called "privatizing the profit, corporatizing the risk" or something to that effect. Basically, it's a form of legal theft.

The New York Times reported in their article "After a Romney Deal, Profits and Then Layoffs" that Romney has acknowledged having second thoughts about some of the deals he drove. He said his post-Bain career in government had sensitized him to the consequences of his decisions as a businessman.
So if this was all just good, pro-American capitalism, what was Romney apologizing for?

You are crazy if you think that. He did no such thing in Massachusetts when he had the chance.
Instead, if he's elected (God forbid!) he will apply his "slash and burn" techniques to the Republican party and "fire" every conservative Republican in sight.

Yeh, and the people jumping in an equating the criticism of Romney with attacking capitalism are doing nothing but tarring capitalism with the same stink.
I think Romney is the least electible candidate, but I don’t think GOP cares as long as they can keep a conservative out. If they have their way, there will never be another Reagan.
Conservatives are to the Republican party what the Blacks are to the Democratic party.

When Mitt Romney Came to Town Why?
As I've heard it told, Bain Capital bought up small companies, sold off their assets, fired their staffs, and left a string of indebted shells in their wake. It's been further revealed that Mitt and his company profited from a multi-million dollar government bail-out connected to the fall of these businesses.
A lot of the people who were employed by those businesses not only lost their livelihoods, but also their pensions.
Do you find some redeeming quality in what they were doing?

They can blame it on Newt or we can thank Newt and Palin for letting us know what Dems were going to do to Mitt. Sarah said we need to vet ALL the candidates. No way could the GOP hide this or give a reasonable explaination, but they chose Mitt anyway???? Newt and Sarah are saving the election, and giving us a chance to win if we get rid of Mitt. Mitt WILL NOT BEAT OBAMA.

If nominated, he will not hit the Messiah nearly as hard as he needs to be hit politically. Mittens will not do so because he will fear being called a racist, which he may be called anyway.
And then there is Obamacare, Mittens winning the nomination will take that issue out of the equation since it was explained by Don Feder that they are pretty much the same thing.
There are also the Social Conservatives to consider with their opposition to infanticide and deadly sexual perversions. They would get a slap in the face with the Romney nomination, furthering his chances at defeat in the general election.
I am going with Newt Gingrich! At least, Newt manned up and apologized for his earlier anti capitalist attacks. As the nomination struggle goes on, Newt will not make these errors in the future.

Well now we know Newt's source when he said that Romney had "15 houses."
Being from Massachusetts, I remember the 1994 senate campaign very well so this film is old news to me and while it was effectively used against Romney, it was not necessarily the coupe de grace. After all, the same voters elected Romney their governor just eight years later.
That said, like another poster said, this is very Michael Mooreish. You could easily produce such a film against Steve Jobs and Apple for putting all those poor independent record stores out of business. No doubt you could find a lot of heart-tugging sob stories about how people's dreams of owning their own record store was shattered by the invasion of iTunes and iPods. Fact is, Bain Capital was behind a lot of success stories also, such as Staples, Dunkin Donuts, Sports Authority and Brookstones, to name just a few.
There are plenty of other ways to show Mitt Romney is unfit to be president besides putting ourselves in league with socialist, marxist scumbags.
This is not a defense of Mitt Romney but a defense of venture capital, without which, most of our successful companies today would never have gotten off the ground. So those who are cheering on this method of attack do so at their own peril and probably have no right considering themselves capitalists.
Those who
