Why Mitt Romney Comes Off As A Bit Of A Phony
Forbes ^ | 01/12/2012 | Louis Woodhill

Posted on 01/13/2012 5:05:21 AM PST by SeekAndFind

If you Google “Mitt Romney is a phony”, you get 102,000 hits. If you do the same search on “Rick Perry”, you get 51,800; “Ron Paul”, 32,300; and “Newt Gingrich”, 3,960. At the opposite end of the “authenticity” spectrum, if you Google “Herman Cain is a phony”, you get 8 hits.

When someone comes across as phony, it is because there is something that they are hiding. What Mitt Romney is hiding is that, while he passionately wants to have the most “strategic” executive job on the planet (and he may well get it), he is not a deep strategic thinker. He lacks what George H. W. Bush (who also lacked it) called, “The vision thing.”

Governor Romney views himself as a brilliant manager and problem solver, and he is right about this. His performance in turning around the troubled Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games was nothing short of dazzling. And, of course, he made a lot of money for a lot of people (including himself), as CEO of Bain Capital.

The right wing MSM is a bit late worrying about Mitt Milquetoast’s electability. He would be a mainstream Democrat 20 years ago, before the democratic ideological purge.

That Romney’s plan doesn’t mention “money” at all should be of great concern to voters.

Nothing in Romney's plan for a sound currency.

The third big problem with Governor Romney’s plan is his proposal to eliminate the capital gains tax, but only for people making less than $200,000 a year. In other words, only for people who do not create lots of new jobs

Continues Obama's class warfare.

Informative, Thanks for posting.

Romney's Former Firm Bain Advised Obama on Auto Bailout "Mitt Romney told CNBC Wednesday that he’s happy to have a debate about private equity alleged role in killing American jobs — because President Obama also forced companies to shed jobs at car dealerships during the auto bailout.

So it is somewhat ironic that Romney’s former firm, Bain & Company, was among the private consulting firms that advised the Obama auto bailout team.

And what did Bain recommend? Cutting dealerships."....

Romney, after watching the 28 minute feature show, whatever you think of him, just looks bad. The whole thing just ...looks BAD.

And if it looks bad to conservative folks like myself, just think how it’s going to play with average Amerians, suffering Americans.

November 2012 will be a downslide ...not a landslide.

Romney overall seems a decent enough guy at times, and at times I agree with what he says.

My problem with him is what he has DONE. We have his record as governor and it’s not going away any time soon. Whenever those issues are brought up he just parses, parses, parses.

The other guys got warts too but they don’t dodge and sidestep near as much, even Paul. I simply don’t trust Romney to do what he says.

BINGO!! It doesn't matter how you define capitalism, it only matters how it will be received by general voters, and we all know, Obama will serve it up UGLY. Mitt is not electable because of Bain. GOP can try to blame everything on Newt, but Newt AND Sarah have shined the vetting light on Mitt/Bain. Now Sarah is trying to get Mitt to provide 'proof' of his jobs claim and to show his tax returns. The jobs were created in Mexico and China. I am sure Obama knows this and it too will be used against Mitt in the general election. This won't fly with voters either. Only unknown is what is in his tax returns? Bet Obama knows. We have a chance of winning the election because of Newt and Sarah, IMO, IF we can show voters Mitt is unelectable, and run with Newt.

Nice article. Only Newt seems able to articulate in the fewest words what the article here says.

Once we pair down the field to two people, Newt and Romney, only a child will be confused as to who is the better candidate.

One gets the feeling that in Mitt Romney we have a flim flam man, who basically came across a great scheme to make his fortune. He basically a product of the Mormon church who has planned for 35 years to get him to this point.

I am perplexed as to why smart people like Ann Coulter, George Will, Mark Steyn, Charles K etc etc can’t see through this imposter.

I am convinced that they don't think Obama can be beaten, and are just trying to gain seats in the senate and house, and they are afraid that if someone controversial is at the top of the ticket that the congress might be in jeopardy too.

And then let’s move on to his contrived Beavis/Butthead phony laugh. Just after the Iowa caucuses, he was speaking to a group and sarcastically mentioned his “landslide victory in Iowa”, and then gave the most pathetic laugh. I was actually embarrassed for him — and I hate him.

And it doesn't occur to them that if someone who -- at best -- doesn't "excite the base" is at the top of the ticket, conservative turnout might be depressed?

I agree, and they remember that Newt dared to change things once before... and had to be run out of town for it on trumped up charges.

there is a political class that loves the status quo and will allow nothing to change. They don't care what party is in charge (or appears to be in charge) because they still get their fat paychecks.. and either way they still call the shots.

Cain scared them... and had to be destroyed.

Now Newt has scared them... and he must also be destroyed.

I fear for this country.

I would take solace with the knowledge that when things finally collapse these jerks will be the first to swing from a rope.. but alas, they will probably just jump on their private jets and escape to their next target.

Occupy Wall Street was nothing more (up to this point) than a dress rehearsal for the real thing this summer, when the clear target will be Romney/Bain. This was set in motion more than a year ago by the Dems.

And they don’t think the Bain stuff is going to be controversial and maximize left-wing turnout which will vote Dems into the House and Senate? All I can figure is the party is run by big money and they have a complete blind spot as to how these Wall Street antics are perceived. It’s certainly not hard to see based on this film how so many of these wealthy elite feel so guilty about how they make their money that they become big bleeding heart liberals.

Keep in mind the 28-minute film only covers 4 firms. I think the WSJ did an article on about 75 more of them, many of which went through similar bankruptcies. The Dems could make a weekly program out of this stuff through the election.

I’m not even sure the RNC is as pro-Romney as they are anti-Newt and were anti-Cain. Everyone else up there is either weak and easily manipulated or is a big enough political insider to not be a threat. Only Newt and Cain are idealistic reformers who don’t care one bit about the status quo. That is why the knives came out for them.

When I see Romney on TV speaking, especially when he’s saying something that he thinks conservatives want to hear, his eyes appear hollow and he looks as if he’s reading off of a cue card or teleprompter. There is no passion or conviction in his voice or delivery. His eyes always look wild and that he’s nervous about what he is saying. That, to me, is a phony, and Romney personifies that.

The article was really more about Romney's bad economic proposals than him being a phony. Here are some good quotes about that...

Given his record as Governor of Massachusetts, his public statements, and the content of his campaign web site, there is reason to be concerned about Romney’s mental model of how the economy works.

First of all, anyone who has ever been a CEO knows that a 59-point plan is no plan at all. A CEO cannot really have more than three priorities at one time.

Given the fundamental nature of the job of a CEO, it is disquieting that Romney’s 59 points are not grouped in any way, and that they seem to be in no particular order.

That Romney’s plan doesn’t mention “money” (i.e., errors made by the Federal Reserve) at all should be of great concern to voters.

...the electorate absolutely must have more from a Republican candidate for president.

Cutting our corporate income tax rate to 25% would (at best) catch us up to where other countries are right now. It would not provide an incentive for multinational companies to refocus their investment programs on the U.S.

The third big problem with Governor Romney’s plan is his proposal to eliminate the capital gains tax, but only for people making less than $200,000 a year. In other words, only for people who do not create lots of new jobs. This is economically insane.

Romney knows that America needs such a strategic thinker as its next president, and he also knows that he isn’t one
