Skip to comments.Obama czar proposed government should ‘infiltrate’ social network sites, chat rooms, message boards.

Just prior to his appointment as President Obamas so-called regulatory czar, Cass Sunstein wrote a lengthy academic paper suggesting the government should infiltrate social network websites, chat rooms and message boards.
Such cognitive infiltration, Sunstein argued, should be used to enforce a U.S. government ban on conspiracy theorizing.
Among the beliefs Sunstein classified as a conspiracy theory is advocating that the theory of global warming is a deliberate fraud.
The find comes as a government document reportedly relates the U.S. Department of Homeland Securitys command center routinely monitors dozens of popular websites, including Facebook, Twitter, Hulu, WikiLeaks and news sites including the Huffington Post and Drudge Report.
Reuters reported that a privacy compliance review issued by DHS last November confirms that since at least June 2010, the departments national operations center has been operating a Social Networking/Media Capability which involves regular monitoring of publicly available online forums, blogs, public websites and message boards.
The government document states such monitoring is meant to collect information used in providing situational awareness and establishing a common operating picture to help manage national or international emergency events.
While the DHS may be monitoring websites for security reasons, Sunstein advocated such actions with another goal in mind.

Global warming is a hoax! Global warming is a hoax! Global warming is a hoax! Global warming is a hoax!
Lol @ the meta-irony here of Cass Sunstein engaging in conspiracy about conspiratorial thinking. What a projecting buffoon.
In a way, I want to see them try this. Social networking involves myriad political and social ideologies, and there would be absolutely no quicker way for this failure of an administration to isolate themselves than to start shutting down the sites that Internet-addicted teens and twenty-somethings use minute-by-minute.
This is seriously turning into something out of 1984/V for Vendetta. When are they going to start banning thought crimes?
We need a good ol fashion witch hunt!
You would be foolish to think this isn’t going on now.
And they would be foolish to think that it doesn’t go both ways.
Yes, Global Warming is a hoax. In total agreement with you, and millions of others.
Thought crimes are already banned. Have been for a while now.
Why don’t they all just wear black shirts and go around beating up people in the streets, criminalizing opposition and arresting their ‘enemies’ without due process??!
Isn’t that how it’s done? This is all so ugly
1) Internet ID's for all users
2) Infiltration of websites for "subversives" who dare to question the administration
3) NDAA -- which allows incarceration without due process for threats to the administration
1+2+3 brings us back to the days of the Gestapo and Stassi!
Here's how President Obama's head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs Cass Sunstein, describes FreeRepublic.com: "'group polarization,' where people segregate themselves so effectively online with other like-minded thinkers that they create an echo chamber where the group's worst and most malevolent opinions get reinforced and strengthened."
“Sunstein said government agents might enter chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups and attempt to undermine percolating conspiracy theories by raising doubts about their factual premises, causal logic or implications for political action.
Sunstein defined a conspiracy theory as an effort to explain some event or practice by reference to the machinations of powerful people, who have also managed to conceal their role.
Some conspiracy theories recommended for ban by Sunstein include:
The theory of global warming is a deliberate fraud.
The view that the Central Intelligence Agency was responsible for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
The 1996 crash of TWA flight 800 was caused by a U.S. military missile.
The Trilateral Commission is responsible for important movements of the international economy.
That Martin Luther King Jr. was killed by federal agents.
The moon landing was staged and never actually occurred.
Sunstein allowed that some conspiracy theories, under our definition, have turned out to be true.”
The Obots and the Warmist trolls are on the US Government payrolls.
And your tagline nailed it! They are after complete control!
....as if the simple act of logging on at FR doesn’t put us all on “somebody’s” List......
By Sundstein’s standards, I’ve probably made The List a dozen times.
.....unless I get stuck into a category that forces me to act out their little projections. After teaching the craft for a dozen years, I’ve always wondered what reaction there would be if I were to act the Warmonger.
The irony, of course, is even in our little echo chamber of "like-minded thinkers," there is an incredible range of thought and opinion. I mean, my God: we have "loserdopians" and the "Christian Taliban" playing in the same ballpark here.
I was on the grassy knoll.
Examples of some Websites, chat rooms or message boards to be EXEMPT from infiltration:
1) Democrat Underground
2) Kos Kids
4) Planned Parenthood
6) Anti-Gun websites
“...start shutting down the sites...”
I would say that it’s not intended to shut down sites, per se; it’s intended to find, fix, and isolate individuals posting things that they find disagreeable, and then use the coercive power of the fed to basically intimidate and otherwise make you disappear - one way or another.
They are testing thought crime technology!
Now you’ve done it!
Only thing is we’re the witches.
so that explains why we have a lot of posters telling us to stay home and not vote this November.. Now it makes sense..
How can’t anyone be so blind as to continue to support Obama? This guy wants to literally criminalize people who don’t follow the party line. I’m trying to think of what governments have done that before. There’s one south of florida, on north of south korea, and another one in the northern most regions of europe.
In his 2009 book, On Rumors, Sunstein argued websites should be obliged to remove false rumors while libel laws should be altered to make it easier to sue for spreading such rumors.
In the book, Sunstein cited as a primary example of absurd and hateful remarks, reports by right-wing websites alleging an association between President Obama and Weatherman terrorist William Ayers.
He also singled out radio talker Sean Hannity for attacking Obama regarding the presidents alleged associations.
Ayers became a name in the 2008 presidential campaign when it was disclosed he worked closely with Obama for years. Obama also was said to have launched his political career at a 1995 fundraiser in Ayers apartment.
True, but they have the technology available to them whereas we are very limited in how much we can see what they’re doing.
He continued: The Watergate hotel room used by Democratic National Committee was, in fact, bugged by Republican officials, operating at the behest of the White House. In the 1950s, the CIA did, in fact, administer LSD and related drugs under Project MKULTRA, in an effort to investigate the possibility of mind control.
You say conspiracy, I say constitutionally protected conjecture and freedom of speech.
Reminds me of a real life situation where a couple had their kids taken away, by the government, because they displayed an "inordinate fear of the government".
"The government will punish you for 'theorizing' on how much the government is out to get you."
Liberals are cowards and wait for you in mobs down a back alley. They want to catch you defenseless and unaware otherwise you fight back and they get their butts kicked.
Wow - that brought back some memories! FR had just grown quite a bit in the previous months due to the 2000 election. The socialists were alarmed.
Well, fair’s fair. Our trolls and agents control many of those sites. Instead of arguing with them, we usually egg them on to post more and more extreme and absurd views.
I love Cass´ article about a conspiracy against conspiracy theorists. It is very similar to my own pet project of implanting schizophrenics with subdermal monitoring chips, in order to take better care of them.
Cass and his nutty wife Samantha Power, others like Anita Dunn and Robert Bauer, Van Johnson, Bill Ayers - are examples of the type of “citizens” who abet repressive regimes taking and holding power
They are just like history’s dedicated servants of murderous despots like Mao Tse-tung, Stalin and Hitler
Their fanatic devotion to the control of the dehumanized collective in the service of their masters transcends political spectrum, right or left
Fascinating and disturbing that these people hold so much sway over our government. They creep about in the bureaucratic shadows of the obama government like rats who leave their droppings in our sacred places
People look at Germany in the 1930’s and wonder “How could the ordinary people let that happen?” They sleep-walked through the normalcy of daily life, then one day woke up and it was too late thanks to faceless nameless fanatics and bureaucrats dedicated to the agenda of a socio/psychopath
Isn’t that the truth?
What should we call them? Obama-nazis? Oh dear this may not be good for me.
WHY? did you make that so small?
I’m pretty sure the gov’t already has people on the social network sites.
Every evil the Left imagines conservatives to be, the Left is.
witness the reverent gushing of the political eunuchs of the 4th Estate, awed at the genius of Cass Sunstein
Hint: Put on your waders before reading
Yeah, they’re the guys calling for violent overthrow of the government to see who they can get to “2nd” that thought so they can go on “the list”.
Face it Will, Cass Sunstein is just not that into us
Cross fingers he continues to think of us as trivial gnats
Here is the paper in question. As a general rule it is always better to examine the original source:
“an effort to explain some event or practice by reference to the machinations of powerful people, who have also managed to conceal their role.
So Marxism is a conspiracy theory!
