Interviews with New Hampshire voters on Tuesday gave a glimpse into the issues that drew these newcomers to a campaign that has been trying to gain mainstream support for its message since Paul first ran for president in 1988.
Most said they were initially drawn to one element of Paul's platform, but came to support the rest of it later.
'Painfully, Very Slowly'
One voter, James Kelley, said he supported Paul at first because he seemed like the only candidate who was serious about cutting taxes and spending. But as he researched Paul's platform, he found himself reconsidering his hawkish foreign-policy views.
"Before him, I was basically like, nuke the Middle East and get it over with," Kelley said. "I started hearing what he was saying, and painfully, very slowly, I was like, yeah, actually, it makes sense."
From listening to Paul, Kelley concluded that it was the United States' own interventionist foreign policy that posed the greatest threat to national security.
"Initially, it [non-interventionism] didn't make any sense, because you keep hearing about all these threats and risks," he said. "But pretty much every single conflict we've been in, we've somehow preceded it. We armed the mujahedeen to fight the Soviets, and then we fight them as the Taliban. We put [Fidel] Castro in power; we put Saddam Hussein in power."

Idiots will out.
LOL this is funny.
New Hampshire isn’t trying to exlain why they voted for Paul they are trying to excuse themselves.
New Hampshire is irrelevant. It is a sham.
Soon we will see how real voters feel, I think Mr. Paul has a big let down coming. At least I hope so.
America was no longer just the place to send the village rebel.
That's when the problems really got started ~ with England, with France, with the German states, with Austria-Hungria, with Russia, with...... the A-Rabs!
it's not like we'd been working along in splendid isolation from the world. My gosh, George Washington was part of the cause of the French and Indian War. The War of Spanish Succession certainly had something to do with American economic might behind the Brits! And, even earlier King Philippe II/III of Spain had used the division of North America as a ploy to bring a full 20 years of peace to Europe ~ (See Treaty of London 1604 ~ it's not about England winning a war ~ it's about Spain winning a war and being magnanimous ~ incredibly magnanimous).
Ron Paul's idea of cause and effect is very similar to the theory of a suppository. That is, that if you keep sticking it up your nether regions it may make its way to the top.
Guess there will be no government weed coming...
And people wonder why most consider Paul's, blame America First ideas a danger to the US. This is Reverend Jeremiah Wright thinking. I wonder when Paul will just go all out and say 'Chickens Have Come Home To Roost'?
While deployed in Somalia in 1993, "I saw firsthand the resentment and the fear that happens when you go in there and use a standing army as the enforcer," Campbell said. He was shot, received a Purple Heart, and was then deployed once again, this time to Bosnia. Once he came home, he recalled, "I was kind of lost until I heard Ron Paul."
Obviously another dope smoking pinko commie.
I haven't heard this from the Paul camp. Is that what they are saying?
Ron Paul’s Philosophy, “Everything wrong in the world is our fault.”
“Before him, I was basically like, nuke the Middle East and get it over with,”
As soon as the “like” spills out, the source is exposed and the credibility fades.
In cannabis veritas. :)
Wow... so NH Paul supporters agree with:
1. Withdrawing our forces worldwide,
2. Standing by as Iran gains nuclear weapons capability,
3. The repeal of DADT,
4. The notion the traitor Bradley Manning is a “patriot,”
5. The connection between Paul and troop-hating Code Pink,
6. 9-11 was a result of AMERICA’s policies, not islamic terror,
7. David Duke, in his support for Paul,
8. Paul’s support for OWS,
9. Paul’s possible ties to George Soros, and
10. The idea that killing bin Osama bin Laden is wrong.
OK... got it.
I call this meeting of the Holy Order of nachos to order...
You did order nachos, the munchies are kickin’ bad dude...

From that he deduced that a "standing army" is a problem?
So sending hundreds of thousands of our young men over seas to defend, fight and die for other countries is ok while our closest neighbor is in full blown anarchy is fine?
Defending the 3rd and 4th largest economies in the world from communism is fine but defending our allies in our own hemisphere is forbidden.
Invading iraq is ok when we are already sending trillions to the saudi royal family is great! Sending in ground troops to pacify tribes in aa landlocked country is awesome. Wake up people.
Not a wounded, veteran hero??
Sudetenland, you should amend the signature after your name.
It currently reads, “Anybody but Obama!!!!”.
Is this true?
There are everything from idiots to treacherous assholes even in the military.
Catch a clue.
With Paul it is very problematic, but fortunately, that is a decision with which I will not be faced.
Dr. Paul would make this country more secure and more strong. Blowback makes us weaker and less secure.
Dr. Paul would cut $1 Trillion from Federal budget in year one. A prosperous country is a strong country.
Dr. Paul would End the Fed - we’d finally have sound money again. Sound money protects savers who provide the capital the help the country grow.
There has been, is now, and always will be a dominant world military power.
What nation or group, SpringtoLiberty, would you like to see fill the void an become that dominant military power if Ron Paul got his way and gutted the US military, closed all foreign bases and retreated to hide behind our borders?
Two questions for those oppesed to dr. Paul.
1. Do you think romney will in any way return the individul liberty and freedom that has been stolen from you and future generations of Americans over the last 50 year?
2. Do you think that a strong vp pick or secstate or secdef pick would change your attitude? Ie. Bolton, patreus, ryan, demint etc.
Then sound money would not mean sh*t to me, my wife or child.
I would answer your questions, but they aren’t addressed to me.
I have to admit that some of it DOES make sense. My skin still crawls at all the weirdness attached to Ron Paul (thanks, ScottinVA) but a lot of what he says rings true.
I think we can agree we need some strong medicine to fix this nation of ours. Romney & Co. will just keep playing the same stupid reindeer games that Washington has been playing since FDR, tweaking instead of slashing. Does anybody really think Gingrich, Santorum, et al, will actually DO anything major to fix the problems, or just talk about change while growing government?
The radical Left is having a field day in Washington. Maybe a move to the radical right, even for a single term, would be better than the Second Civil War that so many of us see on the horizon.
I really don’t know about this one. Something’s gotta give.
So you have no problem with him praising traitors, publishing decades of racist vile loony newsletters, blaming the US for 9/11 and pandering to the Truther kook fringe, sympathizing with the Occupy parasites, participating on conspiracy nut shows, working closely with Soros and Barney Frank, supported by Democrats, foilhats, white supremacists, and the fringe of society, trashing of the US Constitution, dope pushing, promoting dangerous isolationism and gutting US defense and support Iranian and terrorist nukes?
Tell me vooch, there always has been, is now and always will be a dominant world military power. What nation or group would you like to see become that power in Paul gets his way with gutting ours?
Your paranoia must be a result of that cannabis with which you are so enamored.
I agree. There will always be a big boy on the world stage. I want that to be the usa as long as I and my progeny are alive. But what we have now is a military strung out. Standing on the brink of collapse and rout. It is the missuse of our military that so many americans object to.
Look at the recent numbers put up on this board today that show the men actually fighting are donating to dr. Paul’s cmpaign. More active duty personnel are donating to dr. Paul than to obama and the other republicans combined.
Our military was organised and designed to protect its citizens. Not those of other countries. It was designed to protect our borders not the dmz. Our livelihoods not the house of saud.
Also, our warfighting is done by citizens with the consent of those citizens. The office of the president is not the congress.
-—What nation or group,-—
Obviously you are happy with the latest US intervention last “Spring” that has brought the Muslim Brotherhood to power across the Middle East and Africa. Let’s keep the intervention coming because these chickens will never come home to roost. Only a Paultard kook could think that.
Fortress America! Ron Paul in ‘38!
Hardly. I am not a Paulitard. I deal with reality.
And, the military political donations to Paul is BS PR. 1. His cult can check any box they want when they donate. They/he knows they can get press by checking the “military” box. There is no audit of those things. It is no more credible than on-line polls that the Paul cult stuffs the voting. 2. The amount is peanuts. In a campaign that takes in millions of dollars, a few tens of thousands is chump change.
So, you think it was a good idea to be in Somalia and Bosnia?
That begs the question of why the heck we were in Somalia in the first place.
I figure he’d be balanced out by Congress anyhow. Maybe even too much.
That has been debunked. Indeed two threads started by Paulitards that tried to push that tripe have been pulled.
There is nothing to show the validity of the poll. its make up or methodology, and such has been asked for again and again.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised Paulitards with their OWS and Code Pink buddies would go for the "repeat the lie often enough" bit.
You can bring up more Obama policies if you like, however, it does not answer what would happen if a dangerous isolationist like Ron Paul got his way and destroyed the US military.
we are infested with kook paul seminar supporters.
every time I see a pro drug stand post it is a troll suspect.
Even on the radio the kook paul seminar callers are out in force.
Kook paul has zero chance in FL. or any closed state primary.
"The military donation angle been debunked many, many times. The numbers they are using are from a very limited sampling (and from a Soros funded group by the way, but I digress), only donors who give over $200 (quite large for the average soldier to give) and the sampling has been tainted by his "Military Moneybomb" where they were encouraging Paultards to put down they were in the military even if they aren't currently in the military (retired, ever was a contractor for anything with the military, or "whatever"). The number of donors is also so small (about 90 total) it is statistically insignificant in a population of about 3 million (active + reserves). Other polls of larger sampling of the military show Paul's support only in the single digits."
The "recent numbers" posted were pulled because they were BS.
Paulitard spam doesn't fair to well with Conservatives. its more Code Pinkish...
I just do not see how our military posture and decisions over the past 2 decades have made us safer.
Ask yourself this. Do you feel sfer today than you did 20 years ago? Do you think americ is stronger today than 20 yeaars ago? If not then you must agree tht our policies are failing. Our policies re not mking us safer they are making is weaker. Something has got to change and no one else is offering any change whatsoever to american foreign policy of intervention, invasion, and occupation.
Sorry for the many typos. My “a” key is not functioning properly.
Thank god for that...
Now you may get a kick out of that but I don't.
Some of these third-world hellholes are so nasty you actually can't get food to the people without stepping over some bodies of the guys who were stealing it.
That's why we were there. Then thought was given to doing something more.
The mercy mission was allowed to morph into "nation building" ~ and that's where you run into your problem. We were not prepared to do that which, as you know, requires the use of a great deal of armor, artillery and air power.
Yes he would close dozens of bases on foreign territory. Hooray for that. Let the us military defend us citizens. The the german military defend german citizens. Let the japanese defend themselves.
Having allies is one thing what we have are protectorates and de facto colonies.
Every empire in history has collapsed in on itself. Why would anyone think we would be any different? War is ineveitable. But what we have had for the last 20 years is a never ending war. Undeclared and unwinnable.
Bring our troops home and prepare for the coming global conflict that will come wether we have our troops posted over seas or not.
