Former Perry S.C. Supporter Switches Endorsement to Santorum (South Carolina GOP leader)
American Spectator ^ | 1.14.12 | ROBERT STACY MCCAIN

Posted on 01/14/2012 1:01:36 PM PST by Qbert

South Carolina GOP leader Patrick Haddon, who formerly supported Texas Gov. Rick Perry in the 2012 presidential primary, yesterday announced his endorsement of Rick Santorum.

"After looking at all the candidates and their political careers, and looking for a true conservative that has been fighting for real Republican causes, there is only one candidate that has been a consistent conservative fighting [for] family values and supporting pro-life issues," said Haddon, former chairman of the Greenville County GOP. "That is why Shelly and I are proud to endorse Senator Rick Santorum for President of the United States."

Haddon's endorsement of Santorum was at least the second defection from Perry's South Carolina campaign this week. Spartanburg businessman Barry Wynn switched his endorsement to Mitt Romney, after denouncing Perry's "destructive" attacks on Romney's business record at Bain Capital.

Rick S. is a nice person though he cannot stand up to Obama. Newt can do a better delivery in making a liberal think of where the other’s ideas are coming from. These guys (both Ricks) should get behind Newt. The splitting of votes only helps Mitt.

But what are y’all voting for, exactly? So he’s Catholic and pro-life? That’s all I ever hear about.

You can go to this link...

HERE

...just scroll down to see a very detailed matrix of all the candidates' positions.

If that link doesn't work, go here...

LINK

...and find the two links on the right that refer to "Positions of GOP Candidates for President" and download either the full (64 issues) or the condensed (19 issues) versions of the same matrix.

Very handy.

"Obama will mop the floor with Santorum."

I doubt that.

The biggest knock that some have against Santorum in debates is that he's "surly" or whatever... but hey, so is Obama (just go back and watch his debates with McCain)- so they would be neutralized in this aspect. Yeah, Newt would do very well against Obama in debates- but debates aren't everything, and who knows what's going to come out of his mouth from one minute to the next during the long campaign season?

It’s better to say that their “perceived” attacks on capitalism are hurting them. I don’t know about Newt (I have not read his exact verbiage on the matter), but there is a strong difference between attacking capitalism and attacking poor business practices. I haven’t seen Perry, once, ever attack anyone for being “too rich”, but rather for being unethical and incompetent.

Only Cain really had the real business credentials. Romney has his “wall street” credentials which deserve scrutiny. Newt and Perry have superior credentials when it comes to the State’s role in getting out of the way of business. Any attack on Romney’s record is fair game to eliminate the SOB.

“Though it hasn’t been confirmed, he was probably on painkillers at that time, too.”

Was Perry on painkillers when he signed legislation giving in-state tuition to Illegal Aliens?

“That’s pretty much a given. How does Santorum stand out over Newt or Perry?”

Well for starters, Newt supported Hillarycare and has pushed for the individual mandate.

Perry supported Gardasil. Perry is also supportive of abortion in the case of rape and incest.

Santorum is way better than both on the prolife issue.

“Newt and Perry, who also have pro-life credentials that are, perhaps, even stronger than Santorums?”

Not on this planet. See above.

“I am not seeing an objective analysis of Santorum’s actual record here or his actual platform as compared to the others.”

I just quoted his actual platform in the case of spending. Go check it out.

Newt can be brilliant. He can be the smartest guy in the room.

But then he absolutely backbreaks you when the crunch comes. Every time. He says what he thinks, and what he thinks isn’t always well considered.

As an idea man, great, but as president? No. I want someone who I can trust to do the right thing, not someone I have to keep an eye on to make sure he doesn’t do something disastrously stupid.

Dunno why people don’t like those sweaters? I’d rather look at what a candidate believes rather than what he chooses to wear.

That's great but most voters don't pay even a .25% of the attention to candidates that we do at FR. As a result perception is critical. Santorum is great on life and as a result if stuck with a choice between him and Romney I will vote for Santorum. However, a lot of people see him standing on stages with that "howdy doody smile" and the sleeveless sweaters and he projects an image of a wimp.

Ive been on pain pills and they can make you a little sleepy. Still I was conherent. Maybe he was on horse tranqilizer stength? In which case he should have taken a half dose while debating?
Anyhow, Santorum is offering one thing SoCons really , beside religous conviction ,and that is family values.
He ties it in nicely with the job situation.

It is disquieting how the media makes the process all about show and not about substance. That so many just go along with that is even more disturbing. It's why we ended up with Obama.

It's a lucky thing this horse is dead. No amount of painkillers could save it from the agony of this eternal carping.

All Texas taxpayers are treated (more or less) equally, and as a Texan, I'm fine with that. You, on the other hand, can pound sand.

I say some of the people in the republican party and at Huck’s meeting are Romney rinos because Newt is not anti buisness. They know this. Why do people want Romney given a pass. Newt didn’t come down on free markets. People, wake up! He was about questioning his business expierence and creating 100,000’s of jobs. This is way out of shape. Good thing, some of us see what is happening.

What bad business practices? I won't vote for Romney, but saying he wasn't incredibly successful as the head of Bain Capital denies the truth.

I haven’t seen Perry, once, ever attack anyone for being “too rich”, but rather for being unethical and incompetent.

I was a huge Perry supporter until his "vulture capitalist" crap.

What exactly was so unethical that Bain Capital did?

Perry has the family values record to go with the promises.

He was recovering from back surgery-—spinal fusion-—during the early debates. Have you had that particular surgery done? If so, maybe you can tell us how you felt afterward. The timing was lousy, but he was in quite a bit of pain at the time.

Could it be because that's all you ever wanted to hear?

Santorum is pro-life. But he's also a proponent of free trade, the Second Amendment, tax cuts, and he opposes and said he would repeal Obamacare. Moreover, and as I said earlier, he can get votes where Perry has proven he cannot.

So your argument is that ‘Republicans are dumb so they should back Newt because he’s a RealMan?’

Where I come from, RealMen stick with their wives. But then what do I know?

"As for his fiscal conservativism

He has zero credibility as a fiscal conservative, zero. As a leader in the Senate he pushed Ws' big spending socialist agenda and helped bankrupt the nation. All he does is talk the talk.

Hi Ben, Rick is nice (and agree with his views) but he cannot deliver the message as Newt can.

I was hoping Rick S. could move his numbers last week. I see he cannot. I hope you come to see those votes are helping Mitt before it's too late. Do what you feel is right but I can tell you, Rick S. cannot stand up to Obama. Newt has the message. In his C-span message, he says what America needs and has about lost.
