Romney opens 21-point lead in South Carolina: Reuters/Ipsos(sample 995 SC reg. voters 398R 380D)

(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has opened a wide lead over his rivals in the South Carolina primary election race, trouncing Newt Gingrich and gaining momentum in his march toward the party's nomination, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, could all but quash his rivals' presidential aspirations with a victory in South Carolina on January 21 after winning the first state-by-state nominating contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Voters in South Carolina - who have favored Republicans in nine of the last 10 presidential elections - appear to have shrugged off attacks on Romney by rivals who accuse him of killing jobs as a private equity executive for Bain Capital in the 1990s.

The poll showed 37 percent of South Carolina Republican voters back Romney. Congressman Ron Paul and former Senator Rick Santorum tied for second place with 16 percent support.

Gingrich, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, has fallen far back after holding a strong lead in South Carolina in December. He was in fourth place at 12 percent in the Reuters/Ipsos poll.

No, it appears to have quadrupled or quintipled. When it was moving in the other direction what could cause it to change this rapidly? I agree with some of the others it’s BS. If this appears to not be true do you think anyone will offer an explanation?

What about “online poll” did you not get?

As far as Newt goes, he is closing in on Romney.

Santorum is OK, but he will not prevail against Obama or with the electorate in general.

We are in the fight of our lives, and we need a scrapper.

Rick would be a good VP or Sec’y of State.(Bolton can go to blazes—after I shave that stupid mustache off).

I’m with Rush in believing that anyone Obama runs against will win BIG, Romney included. So, as Rush suggest, why not nominate the most convervative candidate possible?

I think I’ll stick with the winner, TYVM.

If Newt can’t win in SC, he’s done.

If the polls are BS why does Romney keep winning the elections?

The winner of what? A bogus online poll with only 40% Republicans? What are you talking about?

I was warning people that this was in the cards. But, nobody listened.

Newt’s support isn’t coming from conservatives. Sure he’s got some support, but it’s coming from Moderates. These folks won’t stick with him. His core is about the same 10 percent that he’s had since February.

He’s dropped back down to his core support.

I should have read the entire article before posting, I’m surprised RP didn’t win it. I’m also surprised, but I’m learning fast, that Fox would give the big headline to an online poll and not mention in their header that it was an online poll’

The guy who won Iowa.

Newt hasn’t lead Mitt anywhere in over a month. Not even in the South.

Here in upstate South Carolina, I have found NO ONE supporting RINO ROMNEY

And Pauline Kael didn't know anyone who voted for Reagan.

If you're unhappy with Romney get the vote out for Santorum. Don't just complain about "rigged polls" that probably aren't. Do something about it.

Time to get behind Santorum.

Trouble is, Santorum doesn't have that many voters who want to get behind him.

I agree. There is no way Romney leads in SC by that much.

could all but quash his rivals' presidential aspirations with a victory in South Carolina on January 21

The last time I was seriously involved in a nomination battle was 1968 (I was playing for the other team then).

At that time, it was not possible to be the "winner" with 37% of the votes in a primary.

When RFK walked to his rendezvous with jihad on June 5, the matter was still very much undecided - because none of the 3 major candidates had a majority of the delegates, and THAT was because no one had consistently won >50% of the votes.

This Romney problem is a RULES problem. Romney is not "winning" ANYTHING, if by "winning" you mean getting more than half the voters.

This ridiculous situation has been created by the RNC and the State committees, and, if there is a GOP left after the consequences of a Romney nomination become clear (I think there will not be), then the rules should be changed.

It is an on line push poll. Anyone can vote in it on line.

Don’t trust this. If S.C. does not stop, Romney, they will be blamed for giving us Obama.

BenKenobi is just being a delusional Sanitorium supporter, grasping at any illusory glimmers of hope they possibly can that little Ricky has a chance.

This is an online poll composed of ~40% Democrats. Do not to take it seriously.

Newt is done. Stick a fork in him. Time to get behind Santorum.

You're now so desperate, that you're putting your faith in INTERNET polls? With 40% DEMOCRAT participation? LOL

With respect for all, since this is a bogus, online poll, I suggest it be removed from “Breaking News,” thanks.
