GOP presidential candidates seek Hispanic votes
Kansas City Star ^ | January 16, 2012 | WILLIAM E. GIBSON

..."Romney cree en nosotros," U.S. Rep.Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., tells viewers of a TV ad in South Florida, amid scenes of swaying palm trees, the Miami skyline and smiling Cuban-Americans. "Romney believes in us."

...Despite his hard line on immigration, Romney has rounded up endorsements from Hispanic Republican leaders across Florida, while pollsters and political analysts predict he will draw solid support from Hispanic voters in the primary.....

"...I've already gotten three fliers from Romney - in Spanish," said DarioMoreno, a Miamipollster and professor at Florida International University who focuses on Hispanic voters. "CentralFlorida and the TampaBay area are where Newt could gain some ground by presenting a more moderate stance on immigration than Romney."

..While preparing his re-election campaign, Obama is courting Hispanic leaders, reasserting his support for an immigration overhaul and revising rules to make it easier for close family members of U.S. citizens to avoid deportation and work here legally. The new rules spare illegal-immigrant relatives from having to return to their home countries indefinitely while seeking permission to re-enter on grounds of family hardship.

...Most Hispanics in Florida are PuertoRicans, who are citizens, or Cuban-Americans, who are citizens or legal residents. They are not directly affected by the immigration debate. Some resent those who entered illegally.

....The immigration debate "has been turned into a political anti-immigrant and racist diatribe, when in reality it's a legal question," said Phil Tua, a PuertoRicanRepublican in Longwood, who supports Texas Gov.RickPerry in the primary. "Because of the rhetoric, you have Puerto Ricans marching in the streets for illegal aliens."

...."Our main concern is not immigration, it's job creation and making sure the country is safe," said Nancy Acevedo of Winter Springs, chairwoman of the National Republican Hispanic Alliance, who backs Perry but also likes Romney....

Evidently you approve of Socialism Light. Good luck voting for Romney.

I would much rather have what you call "socialism light" than the outright socialism and destruction of America that we have with Obama.

I realize there are some who'd rather get 4 more years of ZerO (who won't have the threat of having to run for re-election to hold him back from really showing his colors) than to vote for someone who just might harm America a bit less. If that's you, then that is your choice. I'll be voting for whoever is running against Obama.

Yes, I'd rather have someone other than Mitt. But I'm not going to pout my way into 4 more years of ZerO without at least doing what I can to get him out.

Myself....I’m not stupid enough to buy into the world is ending if Obama is elected rhetoric

With someone other than Obama (yes, even with Mitt), it might be possible to repeal Obamacare, get rid of some of the Czars, cut some other spending, and perhaps, just perhaps, reverse a bit of the damage Obama has done.

If Obama gets re-elected, Congress will naturally assume the American people have given their stamp of approval to his last 4 years and will act accordingly.

I will then be able to thank you and others like you for sticking us with Obamacare forever.

Are Hispanics a special class of “American” that needs to be handled differently? Or would a commonsense conservative message of lower taxes and less government appeal to them as it does to all Americans possessing commonsense?

Better than getting stuck with Obamacare forever. At least America will still be around to regain conservative footing.

If you actually believe the guy who was the principle architect of the foundations of Obamacare is actually going to repeal it, I have some oceanfront property you might be interested in.

He has said that he still supports the individual mandate. He says that we just need to get rid of the bad parts. What exactly would the principle architect of socialized medicine in Mass define as the bad parts?

The only thing that happens with Obamacare is that Romney legitimizes it with a GOP blessing.

So why didn’t he fight Washington like Jan Brewer did? And the way the Alabama governor did. I think in Texas you call it being “all hat and no cattle”. Perry is playing kissy face with all the cheap labor big shots.

Anyone who calls Americans *heartless* or tells a sob story about an illegal grandfather who has been here for 25 years, is just telegraphing that their sympathies are with the illegal intruders and not the American people who are truly suffering in many ways due to the foreign invasion. I saw an eighty year old rancher testifying before congress on CSPAN. He described his life of fear living on the border. He must sleep with a gun beside his bed, he keeps a gun by the door, when he drives his car he has to take a gun with him and when he rides on his ranch he carries a rifle but even though he is armed, if he sees someone he will just leave. That is how dangerous it is at the border and I am sick to death of all the Perry’s, McCains, Bushes and all the other two faced, double dealing open border enablers. You are putting that old gentlemen and many other good Americans in danger because you are playing your political games at their expense.

The main hope for tougher border enforcement is probably to hold the House and regain a good majority in the Senate, and then get some tougher border enforcement legislation out of Congress. Romney is talking tougher than any of the remaining candidates on this issue, though some don’t believe him. But Congress will likely have to take the lead if Republicans can win back the WH.

I just hope that this issue doesn’t get put back on the back burner.

Whe I used “you” I didn’t mean you of course, I was speaking rhetorically to open borders traitors.

That's how I interpreted it. And unless we have a Republican candidate who plainly advocates tougher border control and immigration enforcement, it will be put on the back burner by the MSM and Obama. It was not even on the back burner with McCain and Obama since they had no disagreements.

The MSM will avoid debate of the issue during the general election campaign if they can because they know it will hurt Obama among some voters if a Republican candidate advocates enforcement and points out Obama's refusal to enforce many laws and his halt of most deportations.

He wants the border sealed, drug cartels killed off and NO amnesty.

Gov. Perry and Texas have had to realistically deal with the mess wrought on border states by Federal action and inaction. There is no more we can do to alleviate the problem with the Fed's foot on our neck. Lawyers just eat up your tax money futilely battling it in the courts. There are some battles, where you know from experience, that the deck is stacked against you.

Every request is met with silence, scorn or a bandaid. Every legal challenge is met with the US Attorney Gen. and Federal Courts tying the state up in court. Federal immigration laws on the books are ignored and/or become a financial burden on the state and businesses.

Currently our redistricting map here in Texas is tied up in the Supreme Court (this will bump Texas out of the Super Tuesday vote) and our Photo Voter ID Bill is sitting on Eric Holder's desk, awaiting his approval.

Perry is against everify, the fence and an Arizona type law.

Rick Perry has backed strategic fencing in areas it has proven to work.

Rick Perry, along with other states have publicly (to the court) supported AZ and the other states who are trying to enforce border protections in their states. He has said if he is president he never would have challenged those border states laws.

Rick Perry on E-verify:

“I agree that some kind of electronic verification system is needed so we can make sure employers comply with the law not to hire illegal immigrants. E-Verify is a federal government created and run program, and as a result there have been a number of problems with it so far. The Department of Homeland Security estimated the system could fail to identify more than half of all illegal immigrants.

But just because it has problems doesn’t mean we should throw employee verification out. It means we should make it work. Employee verification needs to be accurate so American citizens aren’t denied jobs based on bad data and undocumented immigrants don’t slip through the system. And it needs to be less cumbersome for employers to use, so it’s not costing them money they could be using to create jobs.

So as president, I’d work to put in place an E-Verify system that’s more accurate, less burdensome and really delivers the results we need it to.”

No matter who the President is, he/she can't repeal Obamacare. All they have to do is sign the legislation from Congress that does so. We have a much better chance of Romney doing that than Obama. Again, Romney would know he had to run for re-election. Obama won't - and of course, he isn't going to sign legislation repealing his "legacy".

The only thing that happens with Obamacare is that Romney legitimizes it with a GOP blessing.

Not if we get the right people in Congress to actually vote to repeal.

We may just to agree to disagree. I think with Romney it is much more likely that he tries to legitimize Obamacare rather than support it’s repeal.
