My understanding is that he supported the right of the Boy Scouts to decide whether they want to allow gay scouts to join the group, but he personally thought they should allow gay scouts to join. That is straddling the issue to some extent, but he did take the key position of supporting the Boy Scouts' right to decide who can join their group.

Regarding his intelligence, I don't know if Romney is as smart as Newt and he's just an average debater, but from everything I've read he's an outstanding business manager and just a real positive guy who always gets positive results and believes his organization will always succeed. Conservatives need to keep in mind that he will have to move to the right from his policies in MA in order to get along with a Republican congress. These primaries are getting too destructive to the GOP and we need to stop the infighting soon and unite behind one candidate. We can also pressure that candidate to move to the right (and Romney will move right to get along with a Republican congress). Then, to win the general election, our candidate just has to just neutralize the accusations by Obama's campaign and focus the public on all of BHO's failures and serious policy errors as President. That's the road to GOP control of the House, Senate, and White House, and the only road to stop an inflationary devaluation of the dollar that would be required to pay for all of Obama, Reid, and Pelosi's massive spending plans through the stealth tax of inflation (if they retain power).

Personally I think Santorum, Gingrich, and Romney can all beat Obama in the general election, but Ron Paul would definitely lose to Obama and Perry would be a toss-up vs. Obama. So I'll be happy if either Santorum, Grinrich, or Romney ends up as the GOP nominee and I'll support our nominee as much as possible.
