Report: Captain claims he "tripped" into lifeboat
CBS News ^ | January 18, 2012 | ap

(CBS/AP) The cruise ship captain under fire for abandoning his vessel while thousands of passengers scrambled for rescue has reportedly come up with an explanation for his flight - he accidentally tripped and fell into a lifeboat:

Capt. Francesco Schettino stated: "I didn't even have a life jacket because I had given it to one of the passengers. I was trying to get people to get into the boats in an orderly fashion. Suddenly, since the ship was at a 60 to 70 degree angle, I tripped and I ended up in one of the boats. That's how I found myself in the lifeboat."

Oh, OK. That changes everything. You tripped and just happened to land in a lifeboat. You really tried to stay on board ship but, hey, accidents happen, right? Tough break.

And every time he swam back out to the ship, evil penguins forced him back to shore.

Tripped? Sounds like he has a good case to sue the cruise line.

Come to the US, Captain. You can work for the President’s press secretary.

Well that certainly settles that.

I hope all the folks that were bashing the guy feel bad now.

Dereliction of duty compounded by this cowardly lie.

There’s many reasons why I’ve never been on a cruise. I’ve just added to it.

Did you see the ship...He absolutely had a better window from the shore....

The idea of the Coast Guard asking him how many dead, how many people...

The Coast Guard needed to get their as**** over there and do "rescue". Why weren't they on board?? Oh....Because it would be stupid at that point??

The boat is beached for cripes sakes....

Yeah, right. Check the tape on liveleak.com where they DEMAND that the captain needs to return to the boat. The police have to threaten him over and over.

Oh yeah, sure. That’s like telling a judge that you tripped and fell on top of that woman and accidently impregnated her. Yeah, that’s going to work.
