I baby sat neighbor’s kids....my cousins picked berries and were happy for the money...how about mowing lawns?

Child labor laws...what are we supposed to do - wait for maid service until we’re “of age”?

“Every kid I grew up with worked.”

Yes! As a CHILD, I mowed yards, shoveled driveways, washed cars, and de-tassled corn! Made mad money too!

Of course that was the 80’s — back when a kid was free to do so.

Reagan made sure that my money had value too!

Obama may have violated the law in his youth...possessing, using, and likely distributing marijuana, cocaine and who knows what else.

Many times I’ve thought about Brave New World. When I first read it I thought it was impossible...but not anymore.

The gay/anti-Christians are destroying our culture and our kids.

Is there any chance the Statute of Limitations for child abuse has run out on Newt ? If not, he’ll have the U.S. Labor Department, and the Child Labor Coalition, and MSNBC camera men knocking down his door any day now. With a little luck he ought to be able to slip into Mexico disguised as an ATF gun runner.

cableguymn: “There goes my chance at being president.”

President? You should be in jail! (/s)

The list of FReepers who earned $ working as children is probably quite long indeed. I delivered papers, shoveled snow, mowed grass, sold items door to door, etc. I even used to go out at night to collect night crawlers. Used to collect them in boxes, separate layers of them with newspaper, and was paid so many cents per crawler. I loved it! Work meant $, and $ meant freedom. I like freedom!

Under the law 13-year-olds can:

•Deliver newspapers. •Work as a baby sitter. •Work as an actor or performer in motion pictures, television, theater or radio. •Work in a business solely owned or operated by their parents.

Really? At 13 my daughter, now 39, worked at an ice cream parlor (31 flavors) that I didn't own. "Big Brother" allowed her to work there because I worked there. Having her work with me was one of the best things I ever did FOR her.

I like it!

That reminds me of a line from a comedian...I forget who...I wanna say it was Dennis Miller.

Anyway, he was talking to a vegetarian acquaintance of his and asked how she could justify owning a cat.

She replied “I don’t OWN Mittens. She’s a member of the family and she loves me and she loves living here.”

His reply? “Oh yeah? Open the front door.”

(I know, a bit off topic, but pretty good.)

New York State child labor laws at this moment...

Facts for Teens under 18
In NYS, anyone under 18 (minors) must show an employment certificate before they may begin work. Many people call this “working papers”. The rule covers:

High school graduates
Minors who work for their parents
Minors who do industrial homework
School officials issue all working papers, except for child performer permits.

Farm Work Permit
Not valid for: work in, or in connection with, a factory or cannery
Each employer must sign the permit. The youth must carry the permit while working.
For youth ages 12 and 13: AT-25 (white paper)
Allows work in hand-harvest of berries, fruits, and vegetables
Must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or give the employer written consent from them
For youth ages 14 and 15: AT-24 (yellow paper)
Allows work before and after school, on week-ends and during vacations
Newspaper Carrier Permits - AT-23
For youth ages 11 to 18 who deliver, or sell and deliver to homes or places of business:
newspapers
shopping papers or
periodicals
The minor must carry the permit while working

This is just to stupid to have wasted the ink to print, much less the energy spent to talk about it.

The comeback: does your child receive and allowance aka PAY? FOR what? Making their beds, cleaning the bathroom, dusting the floor? Folding the clothes?

You parents are not in BIG TIME TROUBLE.

Maybe he even Bribed his kids to make good grades, when they would then receive a BONUS. how horrible/s

Actually my kids started to do simple chores when they were about 3yrs old, it's called training and they wanted to be near me. That is a normal household. This is the work of a very sick and panicked mind.

My brother bussed tables at IHOP in Riverside, CA at age 13 and it helped to buy his three little sisters shoes for school... My Momma worked there as a waitress and they offered her son this opportunity, because the manager could see our family needed the funds. This crap has to end. My brother learned a work ethic that has carried him through his life. My sisters and I benefited by having shoes when we started school. My brother did this in place of mowing lawns or washing windows to earn the same... the family needed it and this is how it was done.

You forgot the IRS. Gotta make sure that income was claimed! What a country we’ve become—a nation ruled by lawyers. Yuck!

Read the idiotic comments at the link. Newt and the mean Republicans want 10 year olds working in Coal Mines.

My favorite, “did you read The Jungle?”. Yeah, cleaning a Church is like working in a 1900’s Slaughterhouse.

I really think Liberals are Mentally Impaired.

BTW, when I turned 16, my father co signed for me to buy a NEW 1967 Camero. I made the payments, paid my own insurance, tires, gas, oil, mag wheels, Edlebrock manifold with a 750 Holley, changed out the 3 speed tranny to a 4 speed, dual exhausts with glass packs,.....all by myself. At 16, that was my 3rd car.

That's what working and saving will do. My father never gave me $5. No money, the car sits in the driveway.

Now compare that to a 20 year old today, playing video games and riding a bike down to the corner to beat someone up for their tennis shoes. The work ethic is gone because SOMEONE will come up with the money. Either mom or dad, or crime.

I did it all back in high school. I worked for Henke and Pilot before it was Krogers. Mopped the floors, stocked shelves, cleaned the bathrooms, everything I was told to do sometimes working to 2am on school nights some days. I knew that if I didn't work, I walked, no new 8 track, no tire money, not even a date. I sent myself to college and left home at 17 and got married at 19. Army at 19. Never looked back.

Now compare that to almost any kid today. What a mess we have made. I never once felt sorry for myself or expected anything from anybody. My Dad always told me "If you are waiting on someone else, you are waiting on the wrong person." His life was much like mine in the work area. He worked since he could stand up and worked all his life. He started several businesses himself. He built and opened a skating rink for $100. Even the cokes in the Coke machine were on credit. Today, if people can't make $80k a year, they won't get out of bed. We have lost something.
