South Carolina PPP Poll - Gingrich 34%, Romney 28%
PPP ^ | Jan. 19th, 2012 | PPP

Raleigh, N.C. – Newt Gingrich led Mitt Romney 34-28 in PPP's South Carolina polling last night, the first of what will be three nights of tracking. Ron Paul at 15%, Rick Santorum at 14%, Rick Perry at 5%, and Buddy Roemer at 3% round out the field. This is not a case of Romney imploding. His support has been pretty steady in the 28- 30% range in our South Carolina polling so far. But Gingrich has risen from 23% to 34% over the last two weeks, benefiting from declining support for Santorum and also from undecided voters moving into his camp. It's clear that the debate Monday night did a lot to help Gingrich's prospects in the state. 56% of voters say they watched it, and with those folks Gingrich's lead over Romney is 43-27. Romney still has a 29-22 advantage on Gingrich with those who didn't tune in. Gingrich is starting to consolidate his support with some of the more conservative parts of the South Carolina electorate. He has a 50-18 advantage on Romney with Tea Party voters. He's up 39-23 with those describing themselves as 'very conservative.' And he even has a 37-20 advantage with evangelicals.

This morning, around the time of the Perry announcement, a Fox reported stated that he had visited a Romney event today and the Romney people seemed VERY depressed.

Good! Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of missionaries.

Wow! And this doesn’t include Perry dropping out. Newt’s probably up by at least 10 in reality!

NEWT!

The ex-wife’s “interview” may be responsible for Gingrich’s upward surge

Yeah. The thought process might be "what a shrew, I'da left her too".

Americans just don’t care about 20 years in the personal past of Newt Gingrich, any more. I am not at all worried about this. If anything it will help Newt gain support and recognition for being honest and unafraid to tell the truth.

America really wants this in a President. Especially these days.

That’s right! We now have two credible candidates ready to go.

Mitt’s “historic win” in Iowa has evaporated.

His support in South Carolina, the GOP bellwether, is evaporating.

His checkered past has been fully exposed by the McCain opposition research.

A new hit book on Mitt called “The Real Romney” just came out with juicy tidbits of his own, like how Mittens threatened to excommunicate a pregnant woman for not putting her child up for adoption.

Sarah Palin and Rick Perry back Newt. So does the Tea Party.

Now is the time to strike. Let’s push Newt over the finish line! GO NEWT!!

Did you send Bill a note telling him you were sorry about the Lewinsky comments yet. Got to get with the new republican moral majority, swinging is ok.

Yeah, I agree with you.

Newt had his Daughters and his Grandkids with him on stage, It was very obvious they love their Dad/Grandpa.

“I was watching FOX Just a minute ago and heard Megan say “this interview seems to tell you more about the ex-wife then it does Newt Gingrich.””

WOW, that is big news! Megan has been on the Romney bandwagon and taking Newt down every chance she could get. That is the first I have heard of her defending Newt.

Newt is coming on strong at all the right moments. The latest drop, took the heat off of him long enough for it to be directed at Santorum, who really deserved some badly needed scrutiny. Santorum was grossly over rated and did not deserve even being called a true Conservative, when his Senate record shouted the opposite.

Maybe the GOP E and media sycophants are finally beginning to have a few second thoughts about mittens. He's had years of practice and still can't hit a home run when it comes to addressing the controversies that could doom his campaign even among Pubbies (who really like capitalism).

>Then Santorum would drop out and the Newtmentum would be ENORMOUS going into Florida, baby!

I think this may happen. People (especially SCians) WANT SOMEONE THAT CAN SAY WHY CONSERVATISM WORKS.

If there truly is a “swingers” vote, Newt gets another bump.

And if there’s a “divorced” vote, bump Newt up yet another five!

But if there’s a “I can’t stand my ex-wife” vote, Newt beats the Mormon by a LANDSLIDE!!!

Post of the week.

Marianne had told Newt she would never let him be President. I’d dump her too.

Boy those who criticized me about going from candidate to candidate are right. Wow. I have been everywhere. I started with Palin, then went Cain, then Bachmann, then Santorum and now Newt. Man it has been exhausting.
