Skip to comments.Gingrich lead expands on final night (Newt up by 9)

Raleigh, N.C. Newt Gingrich heads into South Carolina election day as the clear front runner in the state: he's now polling at 37% to 28% for Mitt Romney, 16% for Rick Santorum, and 14% for Ron Paul. Gingrich's lead has actually increased in the wake of his ex-wife's controversial interview with ABC. Although one night poll results should always be interpreted with caution, he led the final night of the field period by a 40-26 margin. One thing that continues to work to his advantage are the debates. 60% of primary voters report having watched the one last night, and Gingrich has a 46-23 lead with those folks. The other reason his ex-wife's interview isn't causing him much trouble is that there's a lot of skepticism about it. Only 31% of voters say they think her accusations are true while 35% think they are false and 34% are unsure. 51% of voters say that they have 'no concerns' about what came out in the interview. The skepticism of Republican voters toward the media is helping Gingrich as well. Just 14% of likely voters have a generally favorable opinion of the media, while 77% view it negatively. Gingrich's attacks on the media have clearly played well with the party base. Gingrich is leading with pretty much every key segment of the Republican electorate. He's up 41-21 on Romney and Santorum with Evangelicals, he has a 52-18 advantage on Romney with Tea Partiers, he leads Santorum 44-21 with 'very conservative' voters with Romney at 20%, and he's up 39-26 with men. Newt Gingrich looks like the clear favorite now in tomorrows primary, said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. There was a thought that his ex-wifes interview could stop his momentum in South Carolina, but instead it seems to have reinforced his support. Hes winning with all the key groups that determine the winners and losers in Palmetto state GOP politics. PPP surveyed 1,540 likely Republican primary voters from January 18 th to 20th. The margin of error for the survey is +/-2.5%. This poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews. PPP is a Democratic polling company, but polling expert Nate Silver of the New York Times found that its surveys in 2010 actually exhibited a slight bias toward Republican candidate

what your picture really says is that Newt has been working with folks like Obama and Rev Al for too darn long. You and I know he never said what you suggest not because we don’t want him to but because he is part of the problem- KING of earmarks and K ST project with Tom Delay. We need new better people in washington, not people that work the system so they can have $500,000 line of credit at Tiffany’s. (but the idea of eating O’s lunch is a GREAT line.)
"Madness??!! THIS, IS GINGRICH !!!!"
Well your point is Well taken but we have 4 choices. Thats it. We are out of options here. Ive been thinking something is going to happen, someone else is going to save the day but at the end of each day those same 4 folks are standing there. We gotta pick one because the one sitting in our house now SUCKS.
For all those who were saying yesterday that women and the public in general won’t rally around him because of his negatives and feistyness, they need to look at these improved numbers since the ex-wife’s interview and the most recent debate.
He understands what the other candidates do not. The mainstream media is one of our biggest enemies.
Mitch McConnell is very disappointed.
Bad Idea #1) Run against the Republican base.
Many GOP pundits take bad for good.
Polls close at 7PM eastern time. Pray for South Carolina to save us from Willard Obama/Barack Romney!
I would not trust this Dem party push poll scam for the
It’s odd we promote Dem party operatives here without
I hope mittens is stopped .
The father of Obamacare can not be our candidate !
That issue is how we swept back into
Power in 2010 .
Wow. Newt is actually up by 14 percentage points in the polling from last night.
But.....but.....but... haven’t those people seen that interview with his ex-wife? How can this be?
(Do I need the sarc tag?)
Maybe conservatives are waking up.
Its time to coalesce behind ONE conservative candidate and that candidate now looks like Gingrich.
Very true...My ex`s have shown me that no one hates women more than women...She will hang up with her best friend, then say...”B***h”...lol
It is consistent with the movement in other polls.
Clemson University had him up by 6 in their poll today.
The surge seems to be captured in all polls, and the debate seem to have made the major difference.
No wonder Mitt is now afraid of debating before Florida.
Hopefully these polls can energize conservatives tonight in South Carolina and get them to the polls, as well as giving momentum in Florida.
I think we just might be at the turning point in this campaign, and hopefully South Carolina will be Mitt’s Stalingrad.
And the CNN excuse for it to Newt's face got spread all over their lying tongues.
That’s the point I made repeatedly yesterday. We have to go with what we’ve got, and of the 4 Gingrich has what it takes to take the battle to the enemy; the MSM, Democrats, and Obama in particular. It’s a fairly easy conclusion.
Sure, he has negatives, but so do they all. We don’t have a shining knight, a pure conservative. We have to fight with what we have.
I was predicting a 10 point win today. Could it really go much higher?
And the MSM did not say a word about it when Newt deserved to be exonerated for the bogus charges brought by the GOPE in the first place. They had better be careful what they try to drag out into the open from here on out.
Perhaps they actually know that this time.
JUST AWESOME! Thanks for the great news!
“can’t we just get along?”
Your “Pure conservative” mantra is getting old. There never was, and never will be a “Pure conservative”. Drop that pipe dream, for the good of us all. We live in a real and imperfect world and that will never change.
Enemies of conservatives at this moment in time (feel free to add to the list):
the MSM and its grip on the national microphone
Eduocracy in America
Moderate bent of the Republican Party
Newt’s candidacy would address each of these with a reasoned conservative approach more strongly (and in some instances, far more strongly) than any of the remaining candidates
PPP plays the following game :
Peddling some phoney poll figures that are meant to sway voters
Until the last minute then try to accurate on
The last poll .
(1) hammering King on the ex-wife story,
(2) visibly disgusted that conservatives are being asked about Hollywood's financial interests (SOPA), and........
(3) saying Ocare provides 26 y/o's coverage b/c they can't get jobs---"you vote for us and your kids will move out and have jobs."
Palin told Hannity that the wife story would help Newt and she was right. What SC likes is that Newt manhandled that metrosexual girly boy John King. He called out the MSM for what they really are without losing it.
Voting for Newt is big FU to MSM. These pompous fools have no idea the level of anger and contempt towards them in flyover country. Newt gets his biggest cheers when he confronts these despicable twits. He’s channeling our anger.
Don’t forget his line about them covering up for Obama.
Every single little thing EVERY Republican has EVER done is news-bait. Every allegation by everyone they’ve ever known (or not known) is reported. Republicans are endlessly parodied, made fun of, and spoken of contemptuously even in what’s supposed to pass as unbiased “news” reports.
While our Dear Leader is given a 100% pass on EVERYTHING. No one he’s ever known (if he’s ever known ANYONE. Funny how little past he seems to have, huh?) is EVER dug up. Nothing he’s ever done is examined. College transcripts? Who cares. Birth certificate? Oh, you uploaded one to the internet? Good enough. Obama gets a CONSTANT pass from these MSM traitors and it’s well past time someone on our side had the balls to stand up and call them on it.
And that someone... surprise, surprise... wasn’t Mitt Romney.
We need new better people in washington, not people that work the system so they can have $500,000 line of credit at Tiffanys.I see, 'Work the system'. You mean like working in the private sector 'system' after leaving gubmint to make some MONEY? And what's the problem with having a $500,000 line of credit at Tiffany?
You sound like a envious, jealous, leftist, coveter of others goods and prosperity -- just because you're not rich and have lines of credit at Jewelry stores.
Rush said it best “the Democrats and media will tell you who they fear the most by who they attack!” They trotted out their “big guns” against Newt this week and newt walked right up and stuck his finger in the barrel hole and the gun blew UP on them! GO NEWT!
What is Rush’s take on the race and the candidates?
Since I left the United State I have not been able to catch up.
Yet it appears we have a disgruntled Texas Perrybot in 'isle #3' slamming Newt. Seems 3's a little jealous that Newt made some money after leaving congress -- writing a dozen books actually pays, who'd a thunk it? -- and that Newt has a line of credit at Tiffany.
That type of screed could come from one of those envious Occupier deadbeats.
If it’s too good to be true it usually is. I’d love to know who’s participating in these polls. Personally, I think it’s just push polling ala Romney and Perry.
what were watching is the pollsters playing catch up!......Newt was polling much better then they showed.....NOW...they have to get close to the results!
watch for......”unexpected surge”....
Just got back from voting... Gingrich.
Love that image. It’s so Road Runner vs Wile E. Coyote.
Cool. I thank you, my family thanks you, and someday when my granddaughter is old enough to understand these momentus times, she too will thank you.
LIAR! He's written 23 books! And produced a bunch of documentaries.
My apologies :-)
I did know it was a fair amount of books but not almost two dozen.
btw, the area you grew up in IL used to be my old stomping grounds. I worked in Arlington Heights for fourteen years ('86-2000) and patronized some of the 'finer Lounges' in those suburbs after work ;-)

I suggest you read my comments again. I said we don’t have a pure conservative. Never have, never will. We’re all human with human foibles. If purity was my goal, I sure wouldn’t be supporting Newt.
Never underestimate the power of the Republican establishment to steal elections as well as the Democrats. In the 1996 primaries, when Pat Buchanan was running against Bob Dole, Pat was leading in the polls in S. Carolina, and the exit polls on all the networks had him winning. But when the votes were counted the count showed Bob Dole as the winner. The networks were scratching their heads as to how their exit polls could be wrong. Pat Buchanan later commented that the primary states where you voted by voting machine, there was chicanery in the vote count. In the states where paper ballots were used, he won. I wouildn’t be surprised to see that happen here again tonight.
The Newtron Boom is being confirmed in other polls.
Rush has been a mixed bag lately. Win Newt got out in front in Iowa, he was loud and proud that the conservatives were beginning to coalesce around Newt. He had a real good program about the “long knives” coming out for Newt.
Lately he has been uncharacteristically muted with respect to some of Newt's progress, and actually seemed to be defending Romney against some of the callers. Some have accused him of being reined in because Bain has a significant investment in Clear Channel.
I personally haven't made up my mind what is going on with Rush, but the last 2 or 3 weeks, he's been off his game.
Win = When.
