Baseball's Hall of famer ,57, is in critical condition at Duke University Medical Center as doctors found more brain tumors yesterday, according to his daughter, Kimmy Bloemers.

Gary Carter

Bloemers wrote on the family's Web site that Carter's condition started to worsen around Christmas, when he started to complain about headaches. Carter fell on Christmas day, tearing his rotator cuff.

Bloemers said her dad's condition deteriorated over the next several weeks, where he also complained about having problems balancing and feeling tired, which cased him to fall.

Sad. I graduated from Sunny Hills with his older brother, Gordon. The same disease took my best friend in high school several years back. It’s a nasty, nasty diagnosis. All you can do is pray for a peaceful end.

Sorry to hear it - for several years with the Expos Carter was the best catcher in the game.

Gary was known as the kid throughout his pro career because he enjoyed the game like a 10 year old boy. He is one who would have played for free. We love you Gary.

Very sad news, I always feel especially sad when former ballplayers pass on, I feel like it takes another part of my youth away.

I had not heard this news and am so sorry to do so. Carter was a wonderful catcher and baseball player but most of all, a great leader of that ‘86 team. He led by example always and was always greatly respected.

I have a friend suffering from the same disease now. All we can do is pray for a peaceful death. Btw, my sister had a cat named Mugwump. And a fine cat he was!

You got that right about this being a nasty cancer. In fact, it is one of the most deadly cancers one can have. The death rate after 5 years is somewhere near 98%. Prayers up for Gary and his family. Personally, I have a good idea of the hell that they are going through since I lost my father to this cancer last March. In a nutshell, they have no clear idea how you get it, how to prevent it, and how to effectively treat it. Radiation and surgery can only temporarily push the cancer back, because this type always comes back. If there are any long-term survivors out there (I bet there a few), it is nothing short of a gift from God that they are still alive. My father had complained of being tired and somewhat forgetful, and was complaining that my mom's food didn't taste good anymore. He also had a few minor fender-bender accidents. Anyway, it was a matter of only 7 weeks from the time he drove himself to get an MRI to the time he left this earth. If someone can find an effective treatment for this vile cancer, I think a Nobel prize is in order.
