COLUMBIA, SC -- They won't say it publicly -- they didn't want to appear churlish or disrespectful on a night they took a serious beating -- but it's no exaggeration to say that even after losing the South Carolina primary to Newt Gingrich, members of Mitt Romney's circle find it absurd -- almost crazy -- that the former House speaker has even a ghost of a chance of becoming the Republican Party's presidential nominee.
In their view, Gingrich has barely run a campaign. As they see it, Team Gingrich doesn't have the money, professionalism, brains, or organization of the Romney campaign. They see the former Speaker as somewhat unstable and vulnerable to continued attack on issues of ethics and morals. And most of all, they see Gingrich as a candidate who owes his very existence to the never-ending series of Republican debates -- and not much more.

Isn’t that uncanny?
Newt gives a speech and he goes for the throat. Mitt gives a speech and couches every noun, verb and adjective.
We're pretty well known. The last two random conservatives I happened across, knew of Free Republic when I mentioned it. One of them was a pretty prominent conservative.
It’s a good piece. Newt actually summed it well in his speech last evening.
Paraphrase” “It’s not that I am a good debater. I simply articulate the deeply held beliefs of the American people.”
Therefore there is only one question:
Are there enough Americans left?
I remain curious about these early states that call these contests Republican primaries and then let everyone vote. Finally we have reached a place where only Republicans can vote and we will have a clear and well defined Republican result. My sense is that after several of these such elections we will know what it is we truly need to know form a bona fide Republican standpoint.
All Team Gingrich has is a candidate worthy of the office. Romney? I find it absurd -- almost crazy -- that the far left founder of ROmneyCare has even a ghost of a chance of becoming the Republican Party's presidential nominee.
“Are there enough Americans left?”
My question, too. Newt’s win in a Bible Belt state like S.C. makes sense. In the areas populated with freaks in huge numbers — L.A., NYC, SFO, etc. — I’m afraid he’ll do badly. In those areas, shallow and superficial are positive attributes, and Romney will be attractive.
Hitler finds out there is no spell checker on FR...
Ok, just funnin'... ; D
I hope Perry turns his campaign machine over to Newt. Perry is a classy guy, no doubt.
It’s the candidate, stupid.
Well said my FRiend...sums it up!!
Gingrich does not put up with the status quo if it is in the wrong for the country. He loves America and understands her and shows enormous courage in defending that.

I so hope you are right. Wish I shared your enthusiasm. I will vote for him if he is the nominee but not with joy.
To me, Newt is like General Grant. He has baggage, but he can carry it and when it comes to the important task at hand, he fights.
“Why Gingrich won.”
Newt got more votes.
I heard somebody or other on the radio yesterday (I was driving and just randomly caught this so don't even know what station it was) say that he had talked with somebody or other else who had some knowledge of the Romney organization. (I know, very vague hearsay, sorry).
Anyway, the point was that the Romney campaign was the best-organized, best-run campaign this fellow (who apparently had some experience with political campaigns) had ever seen and that Romney is an excellent administrator.
IIRC (and I was a teenager when he was elected) Jimmy Carter was known as a good administrator. I have since read that he was, in fact, a micro-manager (one book written by a former White House staffer said that no one could schedule time on the White House tennis courts without going through President Carter). Well, we all know what a great President he was!
I don't particularly care to elect a great administrator. I would prefer to elect a leader; he can hire people to do the detail work for him.
“[Voters] can’t quite get that comfort level with him,” Campbell said. “They don’t really know quite where he really is coming from. It’s an intangible.”
Mitt is as phony as Jon Edwards.
The RINOs at the Examiner are really crying in their frosted flakes this morning.
There is Romney's problem in a nutshell.
Clearly, politicians can be bought, but thankfully, in this day and age, the Conservative/Constitutionalist/Average American is looking for some one who understands THEIR fears and frustrations, and stands ready to take up our fight.
With each successive paid endorsement, Romney reaffirms his commitment to the preservation of the Government, rather than the restoration of the Republic, where citizens rule the roost.
May God strengthen you Newt, to become that true statesman that your country needs you to be.

Honest Abe won a four way race in 1860 with under 40% of the vote. Great president, but of limited comparable value.
