South Carolina poll: Gingrich triumphs over Romney

BBC North America editor Mark Mardell, in South Carolina, says a Gingrich win is important, because all along the story of this race has been the search by Conservatives for an alternative to Mitt Romney.

It is just possible they have settled on Mr Gingrich, and at the very least such a result will puncture the sense that eventually Mr Romney will triumph, our correspondent adds.

Shortly after the vote, Mr Gingrich wrote on Twitter: "Thank you South Carolina! Help me deliver the knockout punch in Florida," referring to the next nominating contest on 31 January.

I complain about the BBC bias, but they seem to be as pleased as we are over this win.

I didn't sense pleasure in the article, but at least dispassionate reporting. A rare thing.

The pleasure is there.

The BBC is an unusual organisation. It is required by law to be totally even handed in it’s reporting, even down to the emotive index of the wording used in news stories (You should see the rule book! About 700 pages in a very small font).
Of course, editorial pieces have slightly different rules as they can be spun as “personal opinion,” which inevitably seem to be extremely left wing.

Makes it a decent place for getting facts. For analysis, not so good. I prefer al Jazeera for that.

Because Newt isn’t a Conservative. He attacked from the left as an anti corporate occupy candidate.

That is absolute crap. Romney took out loans on companies that went bankrupt and found ways to shelter the money so he could keep it, show a profit, and make sure the creditors got nothing. Conservatives pay their bills, liberals stick someone else with the bill. As Mark Levin said, Romney is much more of a corporatist than a capitalist.

It looks like Big Mo(mentum) will be campaigning for Newt! 40/28 is not just a victory, it’s a massacre.

I don’t have to love Newt. Having seen him in action before, I can’t. But if he can fire up that base, I won’t have a complaint in the world. Things are heating up here because the idiot-in-chief has made such a mess of it all.
