Why didn’t Penn State just ask him to retire rather than fire him. His life was his family which Penn State was a major part of. Bless you Papa Joe

Is this for real this time?

The late news last night as well as first thing this morning, were that yesterday’s news that he had died were false.

Hard to feel sympathy for someone who knew that Sandusky was more than likely continuing to molest children, and chose not to stop it.

Remember before he was terminated, that Joe had announced he would retire after the season. He wanted to retire. He was fired instead. They wouldn’t let him go out on his own terms. I guess they wanted to make their political statement.

A statement like this?

Child molestation is detestable & intolerable. Anyone who turns a blind eye toward it is at least partly responsible.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today. His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled,” Paterno’s family said in a statement.

The problem is unless you actually witness someone molesting a child first hand it is very difficult to do much more than report what someone has said. Mr Paterno reported second hand information.

Wanted to add..the people he reported it to are far more to blame than Mr Paterno, if he shares any blame at all, as Mr Paterno is not law enforcement.
You could argue whether he could have done more to do follow up perhaps.
Even if he had followed through it would still have rested on law enforcement to persue it.

I don’t understand why this isn’t so completely obvious to everyone. He only had secondhand knowledge and he DID report the secondhand knowledge to the university. It was the universitys job to investigate. HoePa did what he should have done.
I feel so bad for him RIP JoePA.

Portraying Paterno (i.e. God Incarnate on that campus) as essentially powerless when it comes to his staff is not accurate, I think. From what I heard he could have called for Sandy’s public execution on the 50 yard line, and it would have been carried out in minutes.

Uh let's not lose sight of the fact that JoePa also either covered up a man/boy rape in his own locker room or was incompetent when weighing football vs. moral law...

It wouldn't have been a political statement if the boy had been your son.....

He DID report it and it was investigated by campus police. He shouldn’t have gone to the local police with only a hear-say story. He was a great man who was treated shamefully by Penn State.

The “problem” is that the “second-hand” information came from a graduate assistant—a member of his own coaching staff, who witnessed the molestation in person. Beyond that, Coach Paterno made matters worse by reporting it to university officials (namely the athletic director) who were already aware of Gerry Sandusky’s criminal behavior and chose to cover it up, lest the “brand” of Nittany Lion football be tarnished, along with JoePa’s reputation.

When Mike McQueary saw Sandusky raping that boy in the shower, he reported it to Paterno. At that point, he had a choice: continue the cover-up, or call the police and let the chips fall where they may. He chose the former, and Sandusky’s crimes continued for almost another decade.

Coach Paterno should be remembered for all that he accomplished. Beyond the record for wins, he helped a number of young men earn their college degrees and enjoy success that might otherwise have been beyond their reach. But Paterno’s legacy will also be forever shaped by his actions on the day in 2002 when he had a chance to end Sandusky’s crime spree once and for all, and elected to remain a part of the cover-up.

It’s tough to judge a man by his decision in one episode of an otherwise stellar career, but Coach Paterno’s inaction led to the rape of other boys (at the hands of his former assistant), and the destruction of countless lives. Sadly, that too will be a lasting part of his legacy.

Penn State was just CYA. By allowing him to continue to retirement it may have been construed that they were condoning his actions, or inactions. I’m sure it was a legal move.

It was either a case of him telling himself "I told them, it's their problem now", or him telling them "If this gets out, it could damage the football program. Take care of if"

Neither makes him a great man.

We'll never know the extent of the cover up nor his involvement with not denouncing a monstrous pedophile amongst his staff feasting upon children right under his nose.

It does not look good and the silence speaks louder than anything he may deny.

In my eyes, if he knew anything and didn't crucify the bastard he's as guilty as anyone else involved.

I have nothing to say on his death other than he goes to meet his true judgement under the eyes of the all knowing. If that means a ticket to eternal peace then so be it.

Career over the shattered lives of children...easy to imagine he died from humiliation.

I think it is disgust with Paterno’s inaction more than “hate”. I must admit a degree of hate for Sandusky, however. There is a millstone waiting for him.
JoPa’s legacy is forever and justifiably tarnished.

Just to clarify - there is no compromise with evil. Turning the other way is compromise and accomodation. "Oh, someone else will deal with it" is a disgusting and inhumane response in knowing there's an active pedophile right next to you victimizing innocent children.

There's a horrid conspiracy here working to protect this sort of thing. It's been buried by the media and there are far too many people dismissing these horrors in light of the man's football record.

To hell with all of this.

Bless JoePa’s soul as he meets his Maker

JoePa has a statute of himself on the Penn State campus which he acknowledged and did nothing about. The students gathered by the statute for a candlelight vigil. This is a clear violation of the 2nd Commandment, which the Catholic Vatican has wiped out (The 10th Commandment split into to to cover the Vatican's deceit).

Was JoePa aware of Exodus 20:4?

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

I pray that JoePa made peace with Our Lord for any and all wrongdoings in his life. This prayer is no different than any prayer I would say for anyone. Ultimately, we are all judged for our life by a God who knows what was in our heart and the truth of our life. Every action, deed, word, and thought is known by Him.
