Skip to comments.Santorum Hits Gingrich: ‘Within Three Years Conservatives…Tried to Throw Him Out’
Posted on 01/22/2012 5:55:30 PM PST by VinL
Rick Santorum began his Florida swing the day after his third-place finish in the South Carolina primary at a rally outside of a traditional GOP campaign stop here.
(edit)We are going to campaign all up and down the state of Florida.
He hit both Newt Gingrich, who won the first-in-the-South primary Saturday, and Mitt Romney, who placed second.
Trust is a big issue in this election...[w]ho do you trust who is going to do what they say they are going to do?
You look at the record of someone who was the governor of Massachusetts and, well, didnt necessarily govern all that conservatively, Santorum said, before introducing a new attack on Gingrich.
You look at someone who was speaker of the House, and again, these are friends, I know they are good people, but when Newt was speaker of the House, well, within three years the conservatives within the House of Representatives tried to throw him out, and in the fourth year they did. Why? Because he wasnt governing as a conservative, Santorum said. He didnt live up to all the hype.
Santorum, standing on a stage in a strip mall parking lot outside of Wings Plus, said he was the conservative firebrand other Republicans would come to if they needed help with legislation.
We were the one standing up and fighting, Santorum said. I was the go-to guy.
Its great to be glib, but its best to be principled. Its better to have all of your ducks in a row, Santorum said. Its better to have someone of principal, someone who has been there, someone whos not afraid when they are getting accused of being intolerant or whatever the case may be stands up and says, Im not, Im not and I believe what I did was right.

Rick should be making his case as to why he should be Pres- not why Newt shouldn't be.
Santorum ought to be saying Mitt is a G— D-— leftist. Not that “he didn’t govern all that conservatively.”
Then, maybe then, Santorum has a right to criticize Newt. For goodness sake they are both Roman Catholics now and at least on paper subscribe to the same set of morals.
BS RINO’s tried to throw him out because Newt wouldn’t go along with HW Bush breaking his “read my lips, no new taxes” pledge.
All I can say is “God bless Callista. I hope she never gets sick.”
Stay classy little ricky!
Santorum is acting like a snot-nosed kid. A cry baby! Time for him to suspend his campaign, because he’s nothing but a spoiler now. Must be getting paid by the RINO “establishment” to be a foil for Mittens.
Seems like Lil’Ricky wants to try for Myth’s VP slot. I wonder if all the hard core “conservative” Lil’Ricky lovers will vote for him in Romney’s VP slot???
The little peckerwood should pack himself up, along with his gay little sweater, and head back north to wherever it is that he hangs his hat these days and look for some other form of income. He has no political future. Folks here in Florida just laugh, politely, at he and his traveling medicine show. Go home Rick!
Santorum really is a blowhard isnt he?
Remind me which leadership positions Rick held in either the House or the Senate.
I believe Santorum is committing political suicide.
“We were the one standing up and fighting, Santorum said. I was the go-to guy.”
OOPS! Is he stating that he was a part of the group who forced Gingrich out as Speaker?
The Republicans who did that were not Conservatives.
Paxson, Molinari, Talent, they were being asked to act like fiscal Conservatives, not like freeloading politicoes demanding pay-for-play.
Today there are still Reps/Senators serving in Congress who were there when Gingrich was Speaker. They are part of the ongoing problem of business as usual in Washignton, D.C. Under a Republican president, they added over $3 trillion to the federal deficit, shunned conservative policy in favor of Beltway influence-peddling, and so damaged the GOP brand that we lost the majority Gingrich had worked years to forge.
It looks like Rick Santorum just outed himself as a liberal Republican wanting to keep Washington business as usual.
I like you, I really do.
However, you have got to stop sounding like one of those whining geeks who wear vests.
It’s really annoying.
What? Oh, he wears vests. Well there it is.
Really, Rick, make your case and stop sounding stupid.
No wonder Sarah back Newt, huh?
25:50 Mark Levin on this audio disputes the Talent and moderate Molinari attack ad on Newt. Mark explains they were COWARDS and did not support Newt against the bogus Democrat attacks:
When he says “conservatives”.....is he talking about Boehner???
Isn’t that when the spending went out of control?
Yep, sure looks that way.
“Because he wasnt governing as a conservative”
Huh? Welfare reform? Balanced budget? What’s not conservative about that?
Rick Santorum needs to go before he ruins his credibility with most conservatives.
Why don’t you tell us why your candidate, Santorum, is the better choice instead of taking under-handed swipes at Newt!
Within Three Years Conservatives Tried to Throw Him Out
Maybe they weren’t really conservatives and were uncomfortable with Newt who was.
I think you are exactly right!
Santorum is acting like a snot-nosed kid. A cry baby! Time for him to suspend his campaign, because hes nothing but a spoiler now. Must be getting paid by the RINO establishment to be a foil for Mittens.
In an interview with stephanoplapuba, he addressed Newt as Congressman Gingrich. Within a minute or two he rattled off these negatives.
Newt is unelectable, erratic, grandiose, worrisome, unstable, undisciplined, untrustworthy, unreliable, risky, unfocused and explosive. He basically said that you never know what you’ll get with Newt in charge.
I supported Rick until the last two debates and it became really obvious who could take on the media and Obama. It is time for Rick to go home and do his taxes.
Pray for America
No, not Boehner. He’s talking Denny Hastert, who makes Boehner look like Jim DeMint.
Don’t know the story of wife #1, but #2 didn’t get diagnosed with multiple sclerosis until well after she and Newt split up.
Exactly. After trying to help traitor Democrat Arlen Specter get elected, Santorum doesn't deserve to get elected dog catcher.
My first choice was Rick Perry.
I cant say that I like Newt personally, but Ill be da*ned if I support RINO Romney or Ricardo Santorum.
Santorums voting record for illegal aliens is shameful.
Voted AGAINST increasing the number of immigration investigators:
VOTED AGAINST HIRING AN ADDITIONAL 1,000 BORDER PATROL AGENTS, paid for by reductions in state grants.
VOTED TO GIVE SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS
Voted to allow illegal immigrants to receive the earned income credit before becoming citizens.
SANTORUM: Trim Social Security now- even if painful.
VOTED AGAINST FOOD STAMP REFORM
VOTED AGAINST MEDICAID REFORM
Voted to increase the social services block grant from $1 BILLION to $2 BILLION
VOTED TO RAID SOCIAL SECURITY instead of using surpluses to pay down the debt.
Voted to impose a uniform federal tax mandate on states to force them to allow convicted , rapists, arsonists drug kingpins and all other ex-convicts to vote in federal elections.
Santorum; Big government spender:
Santorum needs to put his ego aside, place his country before himself, drop out and go back to wherever he came from.
Rick Perry is twice the Conservative Santorum is!
He deserves the VP slot.
Since 2000 he has led the second largest state in the union on to be the most successful economically.
Perry stated that in his administration he would start all countries getting U.S. foreign aid at ZERO, until they proved to be our allies.
He was also the first to bring the war on religion to the forefront.
Not If Romney wins. He'll get nominated to some post. But as for elected politics you'll be right.
Compare this to how Rick Perry handled this week. Santorum will be dead to Conservatives after we watch Romney go on to lose to Obama. Perry will be on the rise and Newt will be writing books and being the Conservative version of Al Gore or John Kerry.
Not a pretty future. Too bad Rick was never a strategic thinker.
I heard it was the other way around - business as usual establishment RINOs got him removed because he wouldn't play ball.
It’s not like Newt does not have a checkered past which, as I like to say, spreads back like the floor of a large diner. E.g. past Gingrich endorsement of Scozzofava — a regrettable move, as her more conservative rival for the GOP slot was kicked to the curb. And I understand Gingrich publicly expressed his regrets.
However we’re arguably dealing with a new Newt who has gained focus and maturity (and seems to have showed some sincerity in wanting to get right with God, even if I’d disagree theologically with what church he went to). And he has taken the gloves off with Obama. And Mitt.
I would urge the two to make peace, and discuss possible future developments such as Gingrich naming Santorum as vice president, or as a future USSC nomination.
Bye Bye Rick... you’re an ass after all it appears.
I agree. And I supported him until recently. This is like a trainwreck in slow motion.
Actually he is sounding like a guy who won a state and has quite a few delegates. This is not over. Sarah says have it go one until Summer and I agree. Go Newt.
Santorum really is a blowhard isnt he?Well, he's certainly showing his true stripes now. And like most of these jackholes, his own personal power and ambition comes before the well-being of the United States.
Plus, there's this:
Santorum gets barely half of what Newt got. Why is he staying in? He could be the hero over night by bowing out and supporting Newt.
I thought he was going to do the good guy bad guy thing with Newt vs Romney. But looks like such is not the case. He’s going after Newt.
So...Rick...you could have taken all this money and notoriet and made a run for the senate... Instead you’ll be a footnote in history of the primary of 2012.
From all I have seen, Newts first wife Jackie was never terminally ill; in fact, shes still alive 30 years later! She asked for the divorce in the spring and was hospitalized for surgical treatment of a benign tumor several months later. She asked Newt to bring the divorce papers to the hospital so she could sign them since he was bringing their girls to the hospital to visit her. They are still on good terms.
As far as his second wife Marianne, they met 3 months after her split from her boyfriend, who was a married father of 3. They married in 1981 and she filed for divorce in 1987, during which time she managed to empty their home of everything. They reconciled, however, the marriage was rocky.
If he gets any cozier with Romney, Mitt will look as if he has two noses.
And that's why he has such a big following now.
Historically, since 1980 (isn’t that when SC was moved to its front runner GOP primary slot?) the winner of the South Carolina primaries has gone on to be the GOP nominee. The handwriting is on the wall.
Yeah, sounds like the same crap Willard was spewing on Huckabees show tonight...his tactic now is going to be that he’s a better “leader” of the country and the party than Newt.
They were not cowards. They were craven politicos. It isn't that they lacked the courage of their convictions. They had no convictions. They were slaves to their political appetite for pork.
Santorum followed the party line and backed specter over toomy.Talk about being part of the establishment. What are they promising you now rick? What a dumbass. They will throw him under the bus when done with him just like last time.BTW wearing sweaters all the time is no way to be taken serious when running for president.
Is this the same Toomey who is a gay lover? The same guy who wants fags in the military. Who voted that he loves the gays? That same Toomey? Please explain why he should have been chosen over Arlen?
