With former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's robust South Carolina primary win injecting a new uncertainty into the contest for the GOP presidential nomination, the campaign battleground now moves to Florida and Nevada - where Latinos, the nation's fastest-growing electorate, wield increasing clout.
Even before his win, Gingrich's campaign was competing hard for Latino support against GOP front-runner Mitt Romney.
The Gingrich team sent out Spanish-language e-mails to Cuban pro-democracy activists in Florida over the weekend and aired ads in Spanish attempting to define the former Massachusetts governor as anti-immigrant and too closely tied to Cuba's leaders, brothers Fidel and Raul Castro. Romney's campaign countered by pointing to a parade of high-profile Latino endorsers in Florida, which holds its primary Jan. 31. The Nevada caucus is next, on Feb. 4.
The aggressive competition highlights a challenge for the remaining GOP presidential field - Romney, Gingrich, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul - which has tacked right on immigration issues while wrestling for conservative votes in primary contests.
The Republican National Committee, looking ahead to the general election, has begun a new offensive to woo the powerhouse Latino electorate, expected to top 12 million voters in 2012 - up more than 25 percent from 2008 when an estimated two-thirds voted for President Obama.
"Democrats are trying very hard to avoid talking about Barack Obama," said Bettina Inclan, a California-based GOP strategist hired this month as the RNC's new director of Hispanic Outreach.
The energetic young strategist with Mexican and Cuban roots heads a GOP effort that recently released the first Spanish-language ads of the 2012 contest, an effort aimed at winning the votes of Latinos in key states, including California, Texas and Ohio, where they have voted overwhelmingly for Democrats.

What I cannot stand and do not support are special favors for Latinos/Latinas to get their vote.
The GOP also needs to get on board demanding reforms (economic, political) in Mexico to increase opportunities for its citizens there. Framed correctly, it could yield the support of Latino voters here and could be tied in with the GOP agenda to beat Obama.

Someone should tell them that we already have a form of democracy here in the U.S.
A recent Pew Hispanic Center poll showed that Latinos, by a more than 2 to 1 margin, oppose the Obama administration's handling of deportations of undocumented immigrants - which has averaged 400,000 a year since 2009. That's about a third more than during President George W. Bush's second term, the center's data show.
Can we please put to rest, finally, the myth that hispanics are with us about illegal immigration?

The latinos in Fla are mostly Cubans-—English-speaking US citizens. They are still fighting Commie Castro.....and want a US president to have an anti-Castro pro-democracy Cuba foreign policy.
Illegal Mexicans gravitated there-—b/c of the area’s Latin flavor. Needless to say, illegal Mexis are a different breed of Fla latino.

For the ads, a simple graph showing the rise in poverty, crime, out of wedlock brith etc for blacks correlated to their increase in vote for democrats. It might not be cool for Latinos to act "white", but I know they don't want to go down the same road as blacks have.
