DOJ charges ex-CIA officer with leaking classified information

A former CIA officer was charged Monday with illegally leaking the identity of a covert officer and other classified information to journalists.

John Kiriakou, a former CIA officer and author who defended waterboarding, was charged by the Department of Justice with one count of illegally disclosing a covert officer’s identity and two counts of violating the Espionage Act for illegally leaking classified national defense information.

He was also charged with making false statements for allegedly trying to trick the CIA’s Publications Review Board to let him use information in his 2010 book, The Reluctant Spy.

The investigation led by U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald was triggered in 2009 after defense attorneys made a classified filing that included the covert officer’s name, as well as by the discovery of photographs of government officials that were given to Guantanamo detainees.

The DOJ said in its filing Monday that the defense attorneys received the information about the covert officer from an unnamed journalist, after Kiriakou had given the journalist the officer’s identity. The defense attorneys did not break any laws, according to the filing.

Kiriakou, 47, who worked for the CIA from 1990 to 2004 and was a staffer on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2009 to 2011, gained prominence by way of a 2007 interview with ABC News, where he defended waterboarding and said it helped obtain valuable information from terror suspect Abu Zubaydah. Kiriakou also said he participated in the 2002 capture of Zubaydah.

Given the DOJ’s reputation of late I'm of mixed mind on the validity of this.

After what has gone on in this country since the Obama regime came to power, I’m shocked that there is any classified information left out there to “leak”.

John Kiriakou, a former CIA officer and author who defended waterboarding...

There's your answer right there, second line of the story.
This guy had to know he was in the crosshairs of Ubama, Holder, and the whole corrupt regime.

We’ll have to see if VIP’s Ray McGovern, EPIC’s Joe wilson and leaky Dan Ellsberg run to his defense or not...

Zubaydah is the lib skeleton in the closet as his interrogations made it clear that CIA dogma that "al Qaeda could not cooperate with a secular state such as Iraq or with a Shiite state such as Iran" was wrong. Woe to anyone who leak that- they won't get the honorable "whistleblower" name the libs and press reserve for leakers who parrot their thinking... they are just "leakers." On the other hand, if this guy gets the coveted whistleblower label and is touted as a "truthteller" by the Dan Ellsberg fan club, then he is probably the guy who came up with the cock and bull story from Posner about Zubaydah.

34. During a 3 Sept 2002 interview, senior al Qaeda lieutenant Zubaida said that Bin Laden would ally al Qaeda with any entity willing to kill Americans. Zubaida explained, "my enemy's enemy is my friend." Bin Laden opposed a "formal" alliance because it may threaten al Qaeda's independence, but he saw the benefits of cooperation and viewed any entity that hated Americans and was willing to kill them as an "ally." Zubaida had suggested that the benefits of an alliance would outweigh the manageable risks to the integrity of al Qaeda. He said the potential benefits included access to WMD materials, such as weaponized chemical or biological weapons material, as well as funding and potential locations for safehaven and training.

"Given the DOJ’s reputation of late I'm of mixed mind on the validity of this."

In addition to the DOJ's reputation/track-record, I'm totally skeptical for the following reason:

- The investigation is led by U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald - of the Valerie Plam "secret agent" sham Skooter Libby prosecution.

- Kiriakou gained prominence by way of a 2007 interview, where he defended water-boarding and said it helped obtain valuable information from terror suspects.

Like Libby , Kiriakou denies having leaked the name of the CIA agent.

Democrat hack Fitzgerald had no problem prosecuting and getting a conviction against Bush honcho Carl Rove's Skooter Libby for a "leak" already made by leftwing darling Colin Powell's Richard Armitage. Why should we doubt that Fitzgerald would do the same for someone causing such a "problem" for the Obama Regime's party line on the "ineffectiveness" of water-boarding?
