Raunch meter rises for CBS Monday comedies
Yahoo Finance ^ | 1/23/12 | David Bauder

Last week seemed typical for CBS' sitcoms on Monday night, television's most popular — and raunchy — night of comedy.

There was a strip club visit on "How I Met Your Mother," lap dance included. The stars of "2 Broke Girls" mistakenly believed an upstairs neighbor ran a brothel. "Two and a Half Men" included jokes about masturbation, oral sex, sex with moms, trading cigarettes for sex and two scenes with loud noises of passion from behind closed doors.

A quick count found 53 sex jokes on the network's four comedies, which includes "Mike & Molly." There were also nine jokes about flatulence or bowel movements, and two scenes where marijuana use was clearly implied — one with a teen-age boy and the other with an older woman.

Tiffany network indeed. Not sure which is more disturbing: the production trend or the alleged ratings rise.

Don't watch sitcoms anymore.

A golfing buddy recommended 2-1/2 Men so Mrs. Theknow and I tried it....for about 10 minutes...I heard the same dialog in the locker room in Jr. High.

And the laugh track these days....Jeez is it overdone!

Just imagine if TV dramas had a GASP! track.

My lady and I became fans of 2 and a Half Men when local channels and TBS started airing older episodes. Something about Charlie Sheen made the show enjoyable.

Since they “killed him off” after the salary dispute and Sheen’s precipitous fall from grace, the show has become completely unwatchable. I watched last week’s episode and the overt discussions of masturbation and even showing a bong on the table in a smoky room was enough for me to sign off the show altogether.

Chuck Lorre makes great shows, and I’m thinking that he’s giving up on 2&HM to focus on The Big Bang Theory which is astronomically more entertaining (pun intended).

I tolerated Charlie Sheen for a max of 5 minutes at a friend’s house...The dumb quotient was overwhelming. There should be a disclaimer that sitcoms that deeply sloped foreheads and the ability to drag your knuckles when you walk are viewer requirements.

I don't watch them either and I haven't in years. But on the occasion I do see something, its remarkable how the writer are going for cheap laughs based on such crude humor. There is nothing remotely sophisticated about the humor on these shows. Its foul language, toilet humor and graphic descriptions of sex all played for laughs. Don't get me wrong, foul language has a place in art and humor, so does sex. But the way the networks do it is so banal.

Coincidentally, I was reading a book about Eddie Cantor which included a description of what was billed as the "first act of TV censorship." NBC cut the following dialog from one of his shows:

Martin: “Thanks to you, life is bright. You’ve brought me joy beyond measure.”

Cantor: “Don’t thank me. Quite all right. Honestly, it was a pleasure.”

Martin: “Just think, it’s my first one.”

Cantor: “The next one’s on me.”

We have gone down hill from there. Our culture is swirling down the toilet.

It is hard to believe that the same network which airs NCIS, Person of Interest and The Mentalist also chooses to air the filth of “2.5 Eighth Grade Boys Locker Room Talk” and that smarmy queer, Neil Patrick Harris, trying to pass himself as a ladies man.

“How I Met Your Mom” is such an interesting title. Unfortunately, I could only stomach about 5 minutes of the show. Same for “2.5 Men”.

All you have to do is turn it off. I don’t get TV - watch DVDs. I get to choose what I want to watch and when. The only reason for network TV is sports, IMHO.

I was hoping that 2 Broke Girls would be better, but I can’t get past the wooden delivery. You can literally see every joke being set up from a mile away. It even makes the blue humor sound like it coming from a high school level of comedy.

But the Asian diner owner is still very funny.

In a comparison between Sheen and Ashton Kutcher, Sheen gets the bump as more entertaining. That was really my only point.

Raunchy, high schoolish humor is one of 712 reasons I don’t watch TV at all.

IMHO, TV has no redeeming qualities. Which is a shame because at one time it did.

When I see complaints about humor that is best suited to a hyper hormone producing adolescent I start to look at the rest of the culture because the stuff is selling. The media pants after a President that acts like a petulant 13 year old boy. Our schools are run by teachers who are developmentally arrested. We have every reason to believe that America thinks with their hormones more than anything else.

Guess I’ve been lucky. I’ve managed to miss all that “stuff.” I vote with my remote control and my pocket book.

Which is why I’ll never drink Sam Adams Beer or do anything “Disney” ever again!

You may recall that some years back the Sam Adams Brewing company sponsored a radio program which featured a simulated sex act inside a church. I remember the ad guy’s comment about the controversy, it was “pretty neat.” The couple involved were from Northern Virginia and ended up paying a big fine!

Then there was Michael Eisner when he was at Disney. He had nothing but ill to say about Southern Christians. Some very mean, hateful stuff. Disney sponsors “gay nights” and other events I’m not interested in. So now, it’s no cruises, theme parks, radio or TV programs or “Network TV.” I’ve lots of friends with whom I converse regularly, making my opinions known. No I won’t put them out of business but it’s a good start!

Most tv is pitched at under thirty types. When I was a kid many moons ago, most shows were pitched at over thirty types. That’s why movies and tv shows are so bad today. The only network show I used to watch, or watch on a semi-regular basis were the CSI series...apart from the Miami CSIs where it became extremely tedious to watch David Caruso put his sunglasses on and then take them off again ad nauseam.

My sisters and their husbands all await eagerly each new episode of these “sits.” I say “sit” vice “sitcom” as “com” implies “comedy,” or funny stuff. It’s all swill. I haven’t watched a new “sit” since we got back stateside in 1997. I watched “Just Shoot Me.” Halfway through it, I turned it off and never went back. Just watching the promos for the “sits” is enough to make me want to vomit.

Not only do I not watch any of them, I resent the promos for them that are run during NFL broadcasts. It used to be possible to have 3 generations in a room watching an NFL game. Towards the end of my grandmother’s life, I hated the low class promos that spewed out of the TV during NFL games. I miss Rozelle. The NFL commissioners since him have allowed the NFL brand to be tarnished.

Most tv is pitched at under thirty types. Exactly.

And, you gotta figure that they're going to direct it at just slightly lower than the median intelligence demographic as well. Comedy has to be dumb enough and slow enough so that everyone gets the joke.

My wife has yanked me into watching the show "SuperNatural". It's a Friday Night B-Movie Creature-Feature show. A Stupid and Campy Monster Flick, but a fun way to unwind after a long week. Call it my guilty pleasure.

Before that, it was "24". A Stupid and Campy Secret Agent Flick. I'm starting to see a pattern here. :-)

I can't think of a single sitcom that I've watched regularly in the past 15 or more years. Beyond specifics - check the news, politics, maybe a football game - an Hour or two a week is all the TV I can stand.

The only sitcom I watch is Big Bang Theory on Thursdays. And that is only because I have a fondness for geeks. :)

I guess I am aging out of the target demographic for most shows. I am 49.

Netflix also has a lot of older, less raunchy sitcoms that I prefer to the new filth. Another place to find stuff the whole family can watch is the kiddie sitcoms on Disney and Nick. Stuff like Wizards of Waverly place, Nick’s Declassified, Drake and Josh, iCarly, etc. Much cleaner than Glee, for the teens and tweens. All free on Netflix instant. For one subscription, I can get it on all computers, cell phones, and tvs in the house. Sweet.

If tv offends you, put it by the curb on trash day. Quit watching the dreck.

I don't watch it, but it's impossible to watch NFL football on TV without seeing the really cheesy promos for these programs.

Book em Dano for selling crap disguised as “#1 rated shows” or so the commercials say so.

I’ll have to look into it.

I use a Roku to stream Netflix but Roku also offers a lot of other channels that offer old movies and TV shows. Most are free and some cost about $3 a year.

I don’t have cable/tv so what we watch is whatever we buy on dvd or sometimes online. I’ve never seen those shows on cbs. They are not alone in bad tv.. My daughter wanted to watch the simpsons newest episode online. They are NOT the same show they once were. At the end after the credits they showed marge’s twin sisters in a rowing contest with male twins. Out of the blue the males started kissing each other. What in the world happened to the simpsons? I knew they had gotten worse but this was ridiculous! It’s sad..
