Really good article; please read it all. Jonah really nails it, including the fact that Newt is his own worst enemy and that Mittens doesn't seem to be quite of this earth.

Goldberg is right, in that the "old news" line works. What changes opinions is the surprise factor.
BJ Clinton used to try to persuade you that this was old news. it wasn't, but he would evade it until he could make that claim.
In Newt's case, it really is old news.

"..He never could have pulled it off were it not for Romneys shortcomings. For whatever reason, Romney seems like a creature put on Earth to blend in with the humans and report back what he finds. He clearly likes earthlings, and they in turn find him pleasant enough, and surprisingly lifelike. Occasionally he finds the right words, but he rarely connects them to the right tone..."
Ouch!

This is the kind of article that I despise - all snide criticism, no value.
Newt is Newt. He's better than Obama, Jonah, you dope.

Long unable to connect with voters on his terms and his timetable, he [Romney] must now try with time running out, and without seeming desperate. Sorry, but he's got nothing. He's played his hand over and over and managed to wobble between 23 and 28% in the polls. People drop out; he wobbles between 23 and 28% in the polls. He IS getting desperate, and will become more imitative, and will wobble between 23 and 28% in the polls.
Nobody wants him except that 25% who think that it's his turn.

Maybe not.
If one believes Pelosi, she has said -- twice -- that she has enough to keep Gingrich from the presidency. And she sat on the committee that investigated the Gingrich ethics complaints.
Why not release them now? 1-he may not be the nominee, so it won't matter. 2-he may be the nominee, so whatever she has would be more impacting in October than now.
Oh, but she it bound and cannot release such information. Yeah, right. In the sieve of Washington things have a tendency to be leaked when politically expedient.

Jonah Goldberg is brilliantly articulate and clear.
"Thats the great thing about Gingrich: He can make describing himself as the divine manifestation of the vox populi sound self-deprecating."
"Romney seems like a creature put on Earth to blend in with the humans and report back what he finds. He clearly likes earthlings, and they in turn find him pleasant enough, and surprisingly lifelike." "This dearth of convincing passion in the front-runner makes the passionate base of the party want to look elsewhere"
Good.
If Gingrich can do that, he might be able to explain the truth to the Americans who so far haven't been able to grasp it. Jonah Goldberg's brilliant clarity is far beyond their grasp, but Gingrich's gift for passionate clarity might penetrate even the thick skulls and self-imposed blindness of that crowd.

stoped - past participle, past tense of stope (Verb)Verb:
1.(in mining) Excavate a series of steps or layers in (the ground or rock).
2.The process by which country rock is broken up and removed by the upward movement of magma.
Yep ... sounds painful.

There's a reader comment on this article as posted on NRO:
The premise of the films is "you set a Monster to destroy a Monster." If Obama-ism is the monster many believe it to be then it must be destroyed at all costs.
And so, with trepidation, conservative voters disturb the centuries old dust and tread the ancient pathway, turn the locks of doors which should never be opened, shatter the glass which encases him, loose the chains that bind him and unleash The Gingrich.
This has never been about Romney. It has always been about The Obama.
Pretty much sums up my position to a T.
