What goes on in the mind of a sniper?
BBC News ^ | 25th January 2012 | Stephanie Hegarty

'A young cowboy from Texas who joined the elite US Navy Seals became the most deadly sniper in American history. In a book published this month he provides an unusual insight into the psychology of a soldier who waits, watches and kills.

As US forces surged into Iraq in 2003, Chris Kyle was handed a sniper rifle and told to watch as his marine battalion entered an Iraqi town. A crowd had come out to greet them. Through the scope he saw a woman, with a child close by, approaching his troops. She had a grenade ready to detonate in her hand.

"This was the first time I was going to have to kill someone. I didn't know whether I was going to be able to do it, man, woman or whatever," he says.

"You're running everything through your mind. This is a woman, first of all. Second of all, am I clear to do this, is this right, is it justified? And after I do this, am I going to be fried back home? Are the lawyers going to come after me saying, 'You killed a woman, you're going to prison'?". "She made the decision for me, it was either my fellow Americans die or I take her out.". He pulled the trigger.

Kyle remained in Iraq until 2009. According to official Pentagon figures, he killed 160 people, the most career sniper kills in the history of the US military. His own estimate is much higher, at 255 kills.

According to army intelligence, he was christened "The Devil" by Iraqi insurgents, who put a $20,000 (£13,000) bounty on his head.'

Chis Kyle will be in my town tomorrow for a book signing. I can’t wait to meet him.

Going to buy one for me, and some for gifts.

The history channel has a great series on snipers. No combat veteran wants to be called a hero. BUT, they are my PATRIOTS FOREVER! ! Remember Carlos.

I saw this guy on O’Reilly. O’Reilly kept trying to get him to admit that killing people bothered him.

The guy kept telling Orly that what bothered him were the soldiers he didn’t get to save. He didn’t have one problem with killing enemy combatants.

It was great.

This is crazy how we're handcuffing out service men and women whom we place in harms way.

Are the lawyers going to come after me saying, 'You killed a woman, you're going to prison'?"

Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell is about the loss of SEAL Team 10 on Operation Redwing in 2005. His three comrades lost their life because they took a vote not to kill two men and a boy who were herding goats and discovered them. Mark gave the deciding vote to let them go but not before anguishing over whether they would eventually be tried in both the American Media as well as the courts. Even more relevant with the recent outcome of the last Marine of Haditha. The goat herders left and told the Al Queda combatants who came with an overwhelming force.

That reminds me of an incident in the battles between the Scots and English.

An English knight, from what I have read, a very good man, spotted Robert Bruce on a small hill by himself with no body guards. The idea then struck him that he could end the battle by himself and spare the lives of many of his friends.

He was able to get to the Bruce and charged him. Unfortunately for him, Robert Bruce stood upright in his stirrups and killed the Englishman with a battle axe.

Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

Too much irrelevant distraction. Compare and contrast snipers Carlos Hathcock, RVN (One shot, One Kill) and before him Alvin York, WWI Western Theater. Each generation is more conflicted, more reluctant, and more threatened by negative REMFs and civilians. This is not a criticism of this honorable marine, who faithfully performed his duties despite the cultural shackles. This IS a criticism of an increasingly confused and effete culture. If we are to survive, we need to be tougher minded. Our enemies certainly are.

Is it really a good idea for him to use his real name? It could make him a target of the Islamofascists.

Somehow, I think there was a little training involved before Chris was "handed a sniper rifle."

I know several people in my unit who are sniper trainers. I got to shoot their 30 cal sniper rifle a few years ago. Talk about accurate using a 7 power scope. 800 meters and had a 3 - 4" pattern.

Honey badger Ann Barnhardt don’t care. And she desecrated bacon with the Koran.

Slack (take up trigger pull slack, if any)

A top quality rifle won't have any slack in the trigger.
